THE AMERICAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE The very beginning…. Since the 16th centuries people, to find a new life, to escape from persecutions etc. came to North America from Europe and occupied territories populated from natives American who were nearly exterminated in the following two centuries. During the 1760-1770 the 13 North American British colonies developed their importance in British commercial empire. England but also France and Spain colonized several territories meanwhile the number of English colonies was progressively increasing and despite continuing disagreements with France and Spain, England gained control of the slave trade from Africa to Americas. Here slaves were forced to work on American plantations in the South colonies. By the end of XIX century the most of Northern American was occupied by people from England. Mother and sons The Motherland England was important for the colonists and influenced their life. At the very beginning the British colonies were controlled directly by the King of England but later on they were organized with a sort of local administration. These colonies were divided in North, Central, South. The differences were basically their economical organization, different social development and religion: in the North there were more manufactures and industries and there were puritans; in the Centre and South there were large landed estates (cotton, tobaccos), slavery and the Catholicism was the main religion. Problems, taxes and War Over the years the colonies grew and they wanted to develop their commerce independently from their motherland. Around 1760 gentlemen from a part of the society very close to the Enlightenment pretended more freedom from English Parliament. In fact all these colonies were a real money tank from taxes paid to England. The Parliament imposed also a Stamp Act in 1765 on documents, contracts, stamps, papers, and the colonists answered with a boycott because they thought it was unlawful. At the words “No taxation without representation!” the colonies wanted a legal representation in England’s Parliament. At the same time public opinion was spreadinf rapidly thanks to newspaper, public conferences and around the cities. All colonists were convinced of the necessity to fight against England and obtain the “independence”. The right moment arrived in 1773 when London gave to the “Oriental Indian Company” the monopoly to the exportation of tea. A group of colonists, dressed like native Americans, protested and threw overboard a cargo of tea came from India. This episode is named “The Boston tea party” and it started the American War of Independence. Joseph Trumbull, “The Declaration of Independence of the United State of America. Signed in Filadelfia 4th July 1776” 1820 Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven Usa. (This images is on A.M.Banti “Frontiere della storia” Laterza 2012.) Finally…Independence In 1774 at the America Continental Congress in Filadelfia where the colonists discussed how to obtain administrative and economic emancipation from England, remaining submitted to the crown of England. Their claims were not accepted by the King George III therefore he sent the army to America to stop the Revolution. The colonists organized themselves under the command of George Washington. The Americans won the battles of Saratoga and then of Yorktown. The 4th July 1776 is an important date because the Declaration of United State of America was issued and to this day Independence day is celebrated every 4th July in America. In 1783 Britain acknowledged the Independence of the United State of America with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. Answer the following questions: 1. When did the American Revolution War start? 2.
