TOPIC: “INTRODUCTION ON THE AMERICAN WAR OF
INDEPENDENCE”
Read the text and answer the following questions.
THE AMERICAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE
The very beginning….
Since the 16th centuries people, to find a new life, to escape from persecutions etc.
came to North America from Europe and occupied territories populated from natives
American who were nearly exterminated in the following two centuries. During
the 1760-1770 the 13 North American British colonies developed their importance in
British commercial empire.
England but also France and Spain colonized several territories meanwhile the number
of English colonies was progressively increasing and despite continuing disagreements
with France and Spain, England gained control of the slave trade from Africa to Americas.
Here slaves were forced to work on American plantations in the South colonies. By
the end of XIX century the most of Northern American was occupied by people from
England.
Mother and sons
The Motherland England was important for the colonists and influenced their life. At the
very beginning the British colonies were controlled directly by the King of England but later
on they were organized with a sort of local administration.
These colonies were divided in North, Central, South. The differences were basically their
economical organization, different social development and religion: in the North there were
more manufactures and industries and there were puritans; in the Centre and South
there were large landed estates (cotton, tobaccos), slavery and the Catholicism was
the main religion.
Problems, taxes and War
Over the years the colonies grew and they wanted to develop their commerce
independently from their motherland. Around 1760 gentlemen from a part of the society
very close to the Enlightenment pretended more freedom from English Parliament. In
fact all these colonies were a real money tank from taxes paid to England. The Parliament
imposed also a Stamp Act in 1765 on documents, contracts, stamps, papers, and the
colonists answered with a boycott because they thought it was unlawful.
At the words “No taxation without representation!” the colonies wanted a legal
representation in England’s Parliament. At the same time public opinion was spreadinf
rapidly thanks to newspaper, public conferences and around the cities. All colonists were
convinced of the necessity to fight against England and obtain the “independence”.
The right moment arrived in 1773 when London gave to the “Oriental Indian
Company” the monopoly to the exportation of tea. A group of colonists, dressed like
native Americans, protested and threw overboard a cargo of tea came from India. This
episode is named “The Boston tea party” and it started the American War of
Independence.

of Independence of the United State of America. Signed in Filadelfia 4th July 1776” 1820 Yale University Art Gallery, New
Haven Usa. (This images is on A.M.Banti “Frontiere della storia” Laterza 2012.)
Finally…Independence
In 1774 at the America Continental Congress in Filadelfia where the colonists discussed
how to obtain administrative and economic emancipation from England, remaining
submitted to the crown of England. Their claims were not accepted by the King George III
therefore he sent the army to America to stop the Revolution.
The colonists organized themselves under the command of George Washington. The
Americans won the battles of Saratoga and then of Yorktown. The 4th July 1776 is an
important date because the Declaration of United State of America was issued and to this
day Independence day is celebrated every 4th July in America.
In 1783 Britain acknowledged the Independence of the United State of America with the
signing of the Treaty of Paris.
Answer the following questions:
1. When did the American Revolution War start?
2. How many British colonies were in America at that time? Were they different or not?
3. Which were the arguments for the beginning of the war?
4. What was the Stamp Act?
5. Who was George Washington?
6. What was the important of the phrase: “No taxation without representation!”?
7. What were the after –effects of the American War of Independence? What was the
after-effect of the 4th July 1776?

The teacher repeats the steps of the lesson and gives homework to students:
ü read another time the handouts and underline difficult words;
ü find out the solution of the questions (4-7);
ü create a visual map of this topic. You need to study all documents you
have and choose the most important events of the topic.
The assessment will be at the beginning of the next lesson and it’s on:
ü Your visual map (how original and correct it is). See also CRITERIA OF
ASSESSMENT (LESSON PLAN)

15 MIN. READ THE FOLLOWING TEXT AND ANSWER THE
QUESTIONS WITH YOUR FRIEND.
1.THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
During the 1760-1770 the 13 American colonies developed their importance of the
British commercial empire. In this period the flow of people from Europe continued to
colonize the west and they hold much territories populated from natives American.
England was not the only one who wanted to expand his power in the New world. There
were also France and Spain with several territories and land but at the end of XIX century
the main part of North America was occupied by people come from England and this
motherland for the colonists was so important but also a “supervisor” of their
commerce and habits. At the beginning the colonies were directed by the King of England
but on their own they were organized also with a sort of local administration. These
colonies were divided in North, Central, South colonies. The difference between them
were basically on the economical organization, social development and on religion: in the
North there were more manufactures and industries and there were puritans; in the
South there were large landed estates (cotton, tobaccos…) with so many slavery at
work and there were catholic. After some years the colonies grew like a independent
culture and they wanted to developed their commerce in a different way, not following
London’s orders. Around this period (1760) gentlemen from a part the society very near to
the Illuminism, pretended more freedom from English Parliament. In fact all these
colonies were a real tank of manufactories and money with taxes for the U.K.. England
imposed, besides previous fees, a Stamp Act in 1765 on all materials on stamp
(documents, contracts, stamps, papers) and people answered with a boycott because
they thought it was unlawful. At the words “No taxation without representation!” the
colonies wanted a legal representation in London. At the same time the public opinion was
growing up on newspaper, public conference and around the cities. All colonists were
convinced to the necessity of fight against U.K. to obtain the independence and the
occasion arrived in 1773 when London gave to the “Oriental Indian Company” the
monopoly to the exportation of tea. A group of colonists, dressed like native Americans,
protested and put into the sea an all cargo of tea came from India. This episode is named
like “The Boston tea party” and It gives the start of the war for the American
Revolution.
In fact in 1774 there was an important America Continental Congress where the colonists
discussed together to pretend from U.K. the administrative and fiscal emancipation,
remaining submitted on the crow of the U.K.; the demands were no accepted by the King
George III therefore he sent in America the army to stop the Revolution. Also the
colonists organized themselves under the command of G.Washington the Americans
won in Saratoga and then in Yorktown. The 4th July 1776 is an important date because
Americans issued the Declaration of United State of America and it is remembered until
now and it’s called Independence day.
