Overview Glapthorn C.E. Primary School Medium Term Planning Topic: Invaders and Settlers (Romans, Vikings, Anglo-Saxons) Coverage Date: 5th January- 31st March 2017 National Curriculum Literacy: As writers, we will write stories with mythical, legendary and historical characters and events, including Roman Gods, Romulus & Remus and Boudicca. We will write adventure stories inspired by the Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. We will write both fictional and non-fictional biographies based on Roman Emperors. We will write arguments and learn how to write formally. As readers, we will listen to, read and discuss a wide range of texts, including myths and legends. As speakers, we will debate issues and formulate well-constructed points related to events in history. Numeracy: As mathematicians, we will explore numbers and place value, including Roman numerals. We will look at our number system and consider its importance in Roman times. Throughout the term we will return to fractions, solving Viking and Anglo-Saxon word problems. We will use our calculation and measuring skills to help us design equipment for our army. We will use our knowledge and investigations of shape and angles to create Roman towns, armour and battle tactics. As invaders and settlers, we will design our own settlements using directions, movements and coordinates. Geography: As geographers, we will locate countries in Europe using maps and the globe and create our own map of the Roman Empire over the years. We will describe key aspects of land use, settlements and trade and make comparisons with the modern day and the past. We will use the eight points of the compass, grid references, symbols and keys to read maps and develop our understanding of changes in the UK over time. Computing: As computer programmers we will be working on scratch, coding Roman games and quizzes. We will use PowerPoint to create presentations based upon our history topics; we will present these to the class. We will be looking to use animation, videos and sound on the PowerPoint presentations. Art: As artists, we will create Roman mosaics to decorate our Roman Villa role-play area. Also, we will create different paintings and drawings inspired from the lives of Romans, Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. We will study and investigate the Bayeux Tapestry. Design and Technology: We will design and create armour and equipment for our troops by using paper and 3D modelling on the computer. We will study Roman vases and bowls, we will design our own based upon our research and make our own out of clay. History: As historians, we will use a range of sources to investigate the Roman Empire and its impact on Britain, and the Viking and Anglo Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England. We will look at key events and battles that have affected the way we live today and relate them to other parts/eras of history. We will compare life, jobs, money, homes etc. between the Romans, Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. We will look closely at time and timelines to have a good understanding of how history has progressed from the Romans until now. Languages: As linguists, we will read, write and speak French and develop our understanding of French traditions and customs. Music: As musicians, we will improvise and compose our own music based on ‘Invaders and Settlers’. We will play and perform pieces, and begin to use our own form of music notation. We will begin to develop an understanding about the history of music. Personal Development: We will consider what we do well and what we could work on. We will set goals for ourselves in order to develop our social and personal skills. We will continue to work hard to become our learning dinosaurs. Physical Education: As sportsmen/sportswomen we will continue with the Real PE scheme and focus on teamwork & leadership in a sporting environment. We will also focus upon the different sports that the Romans used for recreation and training and devise our own Roman training plans. Religious Education: As theologians, we will consider why we should ‘Give Peace a Chance’. We will learn about religious beliefs from the past and how those beliefs shaped the lives of Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. Curriculum Drivers Outdoor Learning As outdoor learners, we will… Take part in competitive games on the field. Cook Roman, Viking and Anglo-Saxon meals using our allotments and ingredients. Apply our map reading and orienteering skills to find out way around Glapthorn and surrounding woods in groups. Experience life as a soldier, and learn about army formation on our Residential trip to York. Invaders and Settlers Afternoon – children to design and put on an enterprise afternoon to share learning with local community. Our Community and Beyond As members of our local community and beyond, we will…. Residential visit to York. Investigate how the Roman Empire changed our local area. Visit a heritage site or a museum to see Roman artefacts. Parents and local community invited in to take part in our ‘Invaders and Settlers’ afternoon. Homework opportunities What is life like as a Roman, Anglo-Saxon or Viking? Using books and the internet, investigate homes and settlements, armies and invasions, religions, clothing, men’s roles and women’s roles, education, life as a child, transport, currency, trade, art and design. You could create posters or a PowerPoint based on what you have researched. There are lots of Roman museums and heritage sites in the midlands, which would be fantastic for a day out full of fun and education.
