Glapthorn C.E. Primary School Medium Term Planning
Topic: Invaders and Settlers (Romans, Vikings, Anglo-Saxons)
Coverage Date: 5th January- 31st March 2017
National Curriculum
Literacy: As writers, we will write stories with mythical, legendary and
historical characters and events, including Roman Gods, Romulus &
Remus and Boudicca. We will write adventure stories inspired by the
Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. We will write both fictional and
non-fictional biographies based on Roman Emperors. We will write
arguments and learn how to write formally. As readers, we will listen to,
read and discuss a wide range of texts, including myths and legends. As
speakers, we will debate issues and formulate well-constructed points
related to events in history.
Numeracy: As mathematicians, we will explore numbers and place
value, including Roman numerals. We will look at our number system
and consider its importance in Roman times. Throughout the term we
will return to fractions, solving Viking and Anglo-Saxon word problems.
We will use our calculation and measuring skills to help us design
equipment for our army. We will use our knowledge and investigations
of shape and angles to create Roman towns, armour and battle tactics.
As invaders and settlers, we will design our own settlements using
directions, movements and coordinates.
Geography: As geographers, we will locate countries in Europe using
maps and the globe and create our own map of the Roman Empire over
the years. We will describe key aspects of land use, settlements and
trade and make comparisons with the modern day and the past. We will
use the eight points of the compass, grid references, symbols and keys
to read maps and develop our understanding of changes in the UK over
time.
Computing: As computer programmers we will be working on scratch,
coding Roman games and quizzes. We will use PowerPoint to create
presentations based upon our history topics; we will present these to the
class. We will be looking to use animation, videos and sound on the
PowerPoint presentations.
Art: As artists, we will create Roman mosaics to decorate our Roman
Villa role-play area. Also, we will create different paintings and drawings
inspired from the lives of Romans, Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. We will
study and investigate the Bayeux Tapestry.
Design and Technology: We will design and create armour and
equipment for our troops by using paper and 3D modelling on the
computer. We will study Roman vases and bowls, we will design our
own based upon our research and make our own out of clay.
History: As historians, we will use a range of sources to investigate the
Roman Empire and its impact on Britain, and the Viking and Anglo
Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England. We will look at key events
and battles that have affected the way we live today and relate them to
other parts/eras of history. We will compare life, jobs, money, homes
etc. between the Romans, Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. We will look
closely at time and timelines to have a good understanding of how
history has progressed from the Romans until now.
Languages: As linguists, we will read, write and speak French and
develop our understanding of French traditions and customs.
Music: As musicians, we will improvise and compose our own music
based on ‘Invaders and Settlers’. We will play and perform pieces, and
begin to use our own form of music notation. We will begin to develop
an understanding about the history of music.
Personal Development: We will consider what we do well and what we
could work on. We will set goals for ourselves in order to develop our
social and personal skills. We will continue to work hard to become our
learning dinosaurs.
Physical Education: As sportsmen/sportswomen we will continue with
the Real PE scheme and focus on teamwork & leadership in a sporting
environment. We will also focus upon the different sports that the
Romans used for recreation and training and devise our own Roman
training plans.
Religious Education: As theologians, we will consider why we should
‘Give Peace a Chance’. We will learn about religious beliefs from the
past and how those beliefs shaped the lives of Romans, Anglo-Saxons
and Vikings.
