FROM THE INTERIM RECTOR _NOVEMBER 2014
STIRRINGS
From time to time I will refer to the phrase “Celtic Spirituality”
in these reflections, so I thought it useful to offer some insights
regarding meanings, history, distinctiveness, relevance to “The
Church:, and specifically, St. Andrew’s.
Why? Because I think that new models for thinking and creating ministry for
today can be discovered/re-discovered in many of the practices of the early Christian
communities in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany. I will mostly focus on
the Celtic communities in Ireland, as that country and its culture were never
conquered by Rome and thus were not “Romanized” until the coming of the
Normans in the twelfth century. The Celtic way of being Christian, while under
strong pressure from the Church of Rome to conform, remained independent,
resulting in many “fierce conversations” with Roman authority.
1.
Celtic Christianity believed that their communities, frequently
following monastic models from the Eastern Church, should be
centers for spiritual growth, centers for learning (Irish monasteries
were the early universities-people came from all over to study with
the great Irish theologians and poets). The communities would be
centers for spiritual formation. The emphasis being on personal and
communal holiness that would be welcoming and life-changing for
people who were willing to connect with the local abbey or
monastery. In many of those early (5th through 9th century) places,
leadership was exercised by both women and men; this practice was
actively discouraged by Roman authority.
2.
Celtic spirituality focused on the presence of God in creation. The
“eco-theology” of the Celts is very much like our own contemporary
awareness of the sacredness of” our island home this planet earth;”
all of creation was holy and a clear sign of the divine. These holy
places-sometimes referred to as “thin places” -where God was to be
experienced, and not just locked into doctrines and creeds, though the
Celtic church was deeply Christ centered in its core-spirituality.
Celtic Christians had a strong sense of living on “edges” or
“boundary places” between the material world and the other worldthe natural landscape was seen as a doorway into another spiritual
realm.
On a personal-and concluding- note-I have been fortunate to have spent many
summers in Ireland and have experienced the sacred in many places and with many
people, sometimes even in church.
Briefly summarizing: the two points made above are the openings to further
conversations re Celtic spirituality and its relevance for the church today; there are
many other dimensions to the Celtic way of being Christian that we will explore and
seek to discover new, fresh ways of being community for St. Andrew’s, so that when
we are invited to
“Grow the Church, Form the Faithful, Change the World”
(Diocese of Chicago) we will be that much better equipped.
Grace and Peace,
Jack+

OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES
MISSION TRIP 2015 TO CASA HOGAR LA FAMILIA
The dates for the Mission Trip have been set for
June 10-17, 2015.
La Casa Hogar La Familia is located in the state of Puebla which is southeast of
Mexico City.
Signup sheets will be placed in the gathering
space for people who are interested in going on
the mission trip. We will be having an initial
meeting early in December to give some travel
details and a rough cost estimate. The out of
pocket cost will be dependent on how much
money can be raised and what the final costs are.
Final commitments for the Mission Trip will be January/ February 2015.
At the first meeting we will try and determine how much fund raising the participants
are willing to undertake, the Outreach Committee is willing to help but certainly
expects the people to help with the fund raising event(s).

THANKSGIVING DINNER
Looking for a way to give back to your community?
Each year, St. Andrew's hosts a Thanksgiving Dinner from
11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. We invite
the local community, we reach out to retirement centers,
nursing homes, shelters, and more, and we extend a warm
invitation to our St. Andrew's parish, as well. If you've
never participated in this dinner, we encourage you to
consider it! Below are a few FAQ's regarding helping out
with the meal; for more information, please contact
Catherine Bevard or John Quené.
What if I'm not in town on Thanksgiving?
Volunteer to help by donating food or helping with publicity!
How much of a time commitment is this?
Make it what you want! Some volunteers have only an hour to give; some spend
the whole day. Whether you're working in the kitchen, conversing with our guests
as a host or hostess, serving the meal, or cleaning up, there's a role for everyone!
(And, it's a great way to get your kids involved! Our guests love interacting with
them!)
What will I do as a volunteer?
There are several roles for which you can volunteer. There is no set time
requirement for any of these; rather, please give the time that you can. Kitchen
volunteers prepare the meal and keep the kitchen 'running' throughout the meal.
Hosts/hostesses will converse with our guests and make them feel welcomed
during the dinner. Dining room volunteers will serve the meal, fill beverages, and
keep the buffet line stocked. Clean-up crew will clean up at the meal's conclusion
and ensure that leftover food is delivered to the proper location.
What if I'm not sure about volunteering?
Ask questions! This experience has proven to be so very moving for the people
who participate in it, and it will likely be a meaningful event for you, as well. If
you're curious, please talk to us!
Sign ups for Food Donations and Volunteers
are on the table in the Gathering Space
Do you have an electric roaster that we could borrow
or that you'd like to donate?
We need at least 2! If you can help us out, please contact Catherine at
[email protected]. Thanks!

CHRISTMAS BASKET NOTES
THANK YOU EVERYONE, we didn’t have to send any family sheets back to
Cathedral Shelter! Should any questions arise in the process, please call Jennifer
Robbins. There are no dumb questions.
Drop-off begins Sunday, November 16th after the 10 AM
service in the Undercroft.
ALL BASKETS will need to be at Church by Sunday, November 30 unless
other arrangements have been made.
 USE THE BOX TAGS – PLEASE label ALL four sides of each box.
NOT THE TOP. This makes them easier to see.
 Additional forms & tape will be available (in-kind giving and box
tags) if you need them
Be sure to check off on the sign in board that your basket has been delivered
and indicate the number of boxes.
 ECW – Look for boxes labeled 862 if you have gifts. ECW gifts will
have an individual check off on the boxes. Make sure gifts are wrapped
and have the recipients name on them.
 Put your in-kind form in the envelope (The driver will deliver it or
mail it). Even if you just gave gift cards or a gift as part of a basket
please fill one out. (It’s deductible!)


Our scheduled pickup is 9:00 AM
Monday, December 1st
Translated this means the truck will arrive around 10:00AM depending on the weather.
If you will be available to help load the truck on Monday morning,
December 1st please let Jennifer Robbins know.
VOLUNTEER ELVES NEEDED
ReVive's Christmas Basket program is in need of
teen, adult and older adult volunteer "elves"
December 2nd-13th from 9:30am - 2:30/3pm.
Lunch will be provided.
Once the Santa's sleighs (the trucks that pick up
gifts) have made all their stops, they return to our offices where there are "elves"
ready to unload, sort, and distribute the gifts. There are essentially two volunteer
roles as we have two parts to the operation: the delivery warehouse and the
family pick-up room.

In the warehouse, volunteers (affectionately known as the
Workshop Elves) organize the family boxes, unload delivery
trucks, and find boxes for the families when they come in.

In the family pick-up room, volunteers (affectionately known as
the List Checking Elves) greet families as they arrive and help
verify the identity and scheduling of recipients.
We are also in need of truck drivers (Sleigh Driving Elves). Sleigh drivers (driver
and navigator) are needed beginning December 2, from 8:30 am until their route is
completed (approximately 3-4 hours). A driver and navigator, equipped with a
ReVive supplied truck (U-Haul size) and GPS system picks up Christmas Baskets
from parishes, schools, or businesses throughout the city and suburbs. Truck teams
may have to help load trucks at pick-up locations. Two to four drivers/navigators are
needed every day from December 1 through December 13. Drivers must have a valid
driver’s license.
To volunteers contact Debbie Dyslin, 312-997-2222 Ext.
SANDWICH BOARD
The Sandwich Board signup is on the table in the Gathering Space
with the menu for the November 13th trip to Trinity, Aurora.
Please note that we will be precooking on Wednesday, November
12 Those items are highlighted. You can help by signing up to
provide food items to complete our menu.
VETERANS' SUNDAY
AT ST. ANDREW'S
As we have for years now, we will be remembering our
Veterans, especially on November 9 after both services,
who have been relatives, neighbors or friends who served
our country in peace time or in war time. The Hospitality
Committee at St. Andrew's are looking forward to
showcasing for example, scrapbooks from World War II,
individual photos of Veterans, maps kept by your family
when a son or daughter served, medals---with an explanation
of who earned them in your family, even an Eisenhower
jacket or other item of clothing at the time. I also encourage you to print a short
story you may remember involving a Veteran, their courage, faith and, as always,
sense of humor.
These are guidelines to follow, please:
1.
Label who the Veteran is. If not known to us, please say "My
father in Leghorn, Italy", for example and sign YOUR NAME on
the back, or on a post-it note.
2.
Dorinda Hicks plans to be in the Gathering Space from 7:30 am
until 9:55, and behind the display tables during both coffee hours.
3.
Please plan to take your item(s) home either after the 10 o'clock
coffee hour or later in the week. Jennifer will refer you to the exact
spot in or near her office where they will be safely stored.
4.
One year someone loaned us a sword for the display, as part of a
uniform. Please, NO ITEMS WHICH MIGHT HURT A CHILD
OR ADULT.
5.
If what you have is very worn, please keep it safe at home to
cherish rather than loaning it to Veterans' Sunday. Print out a story
about it instead. We don't want a treasure to fall apart, but we
thank you so much.
Apple pie will be served after both services.
For questions please call Dorinda Hicks (630) 832-3681 after
6:00 pm evenings until 9:00. Thank you! Thank you!

On November 11th, we will recognize another Veterans Day honoring our soldiers.
Unfortunately, many veterans struggle with thoughts of suicide daily!
During a recent motorcycle Freedom Run event, I met Linda Chrzanowski and her
husband whose son John, committed suicide after returning from Iraq. Their story
can be found by using the link,
https://themilitarysuicidereport.wordpress.com/.../army-spc-john-chrzanowski
This has been haunting me ever since. “What can I do? What can WE do?” This
could have been YOUR son or MY son!
 (CNN) -- Every day, 22 veterans take their own lives. That's a suicide every
65 minutes. As shocking as the number is, it may actually be higher. Last
year, more active-duty soldiers killed themselves than died in combat.
More than 69% of all veteran suicides were among those 50 and older!
30% of all veterans have considered suicide!
 (Washington Post reports) It's a huge issue — with more than half of the
2.6 million veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan still struggling with physical
or mental health problems — many of which know a fellow service
member who has attempted or committed suicide.

part of our Veterans Day recognition on Sunday, November 9th.
On behalf of the Rolling Thunder
organization, by year’s end I will be
meeting with Anita Garmona,
Suicide Coordinator at VA Hines
hospital for more ideas on “how we
can help”. If you are interested in
receiving more information, add
your name to the sign up list attached
to the SAVE poster.

In the meantime, we here at St. Andrew’s can start now by including the Veteran
Suicide issue in your daily prayers and add this issue to our prayer list.

CHRISTMAS FLOWERS
It is through the generosity of parishioners that the Altar Guild is
able to provide the wine, wafers, candles, and flowers for our
weekly services. The Altar Guild is responsible for the acquisition
and provision of all these elements for all services and is funded
solely by the contributions made through flower memorials as
well as through other designated gifts. Without them, we would
not be able to do so.
As the holiday season approaches, won't you please consider additional gifts to the
Altar Guild in memory or thanksgiving of loved ones. These gifts will be used to
purchase the poinsettias and flower arrangements for our Christmas celebrations.
We spend approximately $1,000 for these flowers and your contributions are needed
to help defray their costs. We very much appreciate your consideration. Should you
have any questions, please feel free to contact Kathy Nazzarini or Karin Anderson,
Altar Guild Directresses.

We will be having our regular rehearsals all through the month of November after
communion, in preparation for singing on Sunday, November 30, for the beginning

Youth Choir shirts so that the congregation will know you are a Youth Choir
member.
This month we will also begin rehearsing the music that we will sing for the
