Usage Levels and Benefits
Lithium hypochlorite, a granular chlorine product for swimming pools and spas,
is used as a premium shock that maintains the chemical balance of the water.
The most common usage level of lithium hypochlorite shock recommended is 1
lb per 10,000 gallons of water. However, for efficient shocking amount used
should be adjusted according to conditions. In water that is heavily soiled usage
may need to be increased to 1 lb for each 6,000 – 7,500 gallons.
Under normal conditions lithium hypochlorite dissolves completely in about 60
seconds. It’s not affected by typical temperatures, pH levels or hardness. Its
free-flowing action assures maximum chlorine delivery. Lithium hypochlorite will
not injure any sensitive surfaces such as vinyl-lined, fiberglass or plaster pools
and spas. Excellent for superchlorination.
Used regularly, lithium hypochlorite will sharply decrease the frequency of
fouled chemical feed pumps, clogged filters, undesired backwashes, and
expensive repair and replacements. Unlike a number of competitive products, it
will not bleach vinyl liners, and will minimize unsightly calcium deposits.
Lithium hypochlorite, being 100 times more soluble than calcium hydroxide and
1000 times for soluble than calcium carbonate, is completely soluble and will
not produce cloudiness, residue or scale. Since lithium hypochlorite contains
extremely small amounts of hydroxides and carbonates (chemicals that
increase pH, increase total alkalinity and can cause eye and skin irritation),
there is almost no effects to the balanced water:

pH – none to slight

Total Alkalinity – no effect

Calcium Hardness – no effect

Stabilizer (Cyanuric acid) – no effect
In fact, shock doses up to 100 ppm chlorine with lithium can be added to most
pools or spas without changing the pH.
