BAHAMAS FLYFISHING
SOUTH ANDROS ISLAND
TIAMO RESORT
• Exceptional bonefishing only minutes from the resort’s dock
• Located on the South Bight • Small, upscale resort, perfect for non-angling companions
• Comfortable beachfront cottages with private bath and air conditioning
• Gourmet meals • Experienced and friendly local fly fishing guides • Limited to 8 anglers
With the myriad of fishing lodges,
hotels and mega-resorts in the
Bahamas, it is often tough to decide
where to go. Non-fishing
companions don’t always appreciate,
or even accept, the angler’s desire to
be close to the best fishing. Hardcore anglers don’t always understand
why it is important to have a
swimming pool, spa or naturalist
guides at a fishing lodge. Tiamo is
one of those few places where both
the hard-core angler, and their nonangling companions, can both get
what they want. With comfortable, well-appointed accommodations, gourmet cuisine,
stunning scenery and a dedicated staff of experienced bonefishing guides, no one has to
compromise at Tiamo. Although designed for groups with mixed interests, even a group
of hard-core anglers would be hard pressed to find a better location.
I have had the pleasure of visiting Tiamo numerous times in the past few years. Like
many, I was sad to see it close last year. What a relief it was when I met the resort’s new
owner, Bill Warburg, for the first time this past June. I met with Bill, at Tiamo, as he
showed me the progress his building crew was making with the renovations. From his plans
to control bugs with natural alternatives to pesticides, to his vision for improving the
uniquely designed guest cottages, it was clear that he is dedicated to making Tiamo even
better than it was. Many former guests can’t imagine a better Tiamo, but I think that even
the most pessimistic will appreciate the changes, and I would encourage them to return. For
those of you that don’t know Tiamo yet, you are in for a real treat. I will visit again, once
they are officially open, but we are confident in the team that Bill has assembled, and are
already taking bookings for the upcoming season.

Tiamo Resort originally opened in 2002 as an eco-friendly “green” resort, catering to a
variety of outdoors enthusiasts, couples and the occasional lucky angler. It quickly became
a favorite of Orvis Travel customers who appreciated the easy access to the great flats
surrounding South Andros, while their non-angling companions enjoyed a nice friendly
setting and a variety of activities led by the resort’s naturalist guides. The resort was
recently purchased by Bill Warburg & Ellie Boddington, and is being renovated to
provide more modern amenities, like air conditioning and a freshwater infinity pool. The
grand re-opening is scheduled for October, 2009 and the new owners promise to keep the
elements that made Tiamo special, while improving those that made it a little too rustic
for some. By adding air conditioning, modern plumbing and eco friendly insect control,
Tiamo will be transformed into an intimate, but comfortable oasis, situated amidst some of
the best bonefishing in The Bahamas. Tiamo’s management and staff are dedicated to
offering an exceptional bonefishing experience, but plenty of emphasis will also be placed
on comfort, fine food and personalized service. Tiamo is the perfect choice for mixed
groups, or those that want to enjoy other activities in addition to a few days of guided fly
fishing. Of course, hard-core bonefisherman will also enjoy Tiamo’s amenities and cuisine
after a long day on the water.
The Resort
The spacious, individual cottages
are tucked beneath palm trees a few
steps back from the white-sand
beach and water’s edge. Guests
have the option of a traditional
Tiamo open air “Island Breeze
Cottage” or upgrading to an air
conditioned cottage, appropriately
called a “Cool Cottage”. The
Island Breeze Cottages are designed
to keep occupants comfortable by
utilizing the cool sea breezes and an
ultra efficient, and quiet, ceiling fan. The Cool Cottages on the other hand are fully air
conditioned, providing maximum comfort, but lack the open air “sleeping with nature”
feel of the Island Cottages. Regardless of cabin choice, guests have the option of a king
sized bed or two twins.
The resort’s Great Room, a spacious and relaxed Bahamian lodge, is just a short walk
down the beach from the guest cottages. The Great Room overlooks the resort’s infinity
pool and the ocean beyond. It is surrounded by three levels of decking, providing ample
opportunities for private discussions or interacting with other guests. Inside the Great
Room there’s a well stocked full service bar, a charming dining room, and a secluded
library with Internet access and satellite television.
For those guests that need to exercise in order to relax, Tiamo boasts an impressive gym.
The gym is air-conditioned and fully equipped with cardio and multi-gym, free weights

and chi balls. You can rejuvenate your mind and body by gazing out over the peaceful
ocean while you exercise.
Adjacent to the gym is an intimate spa surrounded by the sights and sounds of the palm
tree jungle. Guests are offered a wonderful selection of health-giving and beautifying
treatments. Whether you choose a facial, massage, or full body scrub and wrap by the
resort’s resident therapist, during your time in the spa, the real world back home will seem
a million miles away.
Food & Bar
Tiamo Resort imports a Michelin trained executive chef to oversee all of the meals. You
will be tempted daily with a mix of Bahamian and fusion cuisine served with fine wines
from around the world. Vegetarian and lighter options are also available.
Breakfast is served in the Great Room each morning and includes coffee, juices, fresh
fruit, pastries, bread, meat, and eggs cooked to order.
Lunch orders are placed the evening prior and typically consist of a sandwich or salad,
fruit, chips, and some homemade cookies. Although it is often possible to return to the
lodge for lunch, most anglers enjoy lunch on the water.
After a full day of fishing or exploring, guests are invited to relax with a cocktail or cold
beer at the resort’s bar, or on the deck overlooking the ocean. The full service bar has a
nice selection of wines, beer and liquors and the friendly bartender will happily mix your
favorite drinks while sharing stories of life in the Bahamas. Delicious appetizers are served
just prior to dinner, so you can sample local specialties such as conch fritters, ceviche and
grouper fingers.
Dinners are served in the dining pavilion, on the deck overlooking the infinity pool, in
the privacy of your own cottage, or virtually anywhere else you might choose. The
resort’s management can even make arrangements for you to go by boat to a deserted
island and enjoy a romantic picnic lunch or fully prepared dinner on the beach.
Dinner starts with homemade soups and all entrees are served with fresh salads. The chef’s
emphasis is on mixing Bahamian favorites with European and American fusion dishes.

Desserts will have a Bahamian flair with a new treat served every evening after dinner.
After dinner guests can enjoy a nice pour of their favorite brandy, port or other digestif
from the bar.
About the Andros Islands
North Andros, Mangrove Cay and South
Andros islands are collectively known as
Andros Island, with little more than tidal
creeks separating them from each other.
Andros Island is the largest island in the
Bahamas, and the fifth largest in the West
Indies at roughly 2300 square miles. The
island is 104 miles long and 40 miles wide at
its widest point. The third largest barrier reef
in the world stretches for over 140 miles
along the eastern edge of Andros Island.
Andros Island is often referred to as the
“bonefishing capital of the world”. Other
popular activities on the island include
SCUBA diving, snorkeling and exploring an
extensive network of freshwater blue holes.
The first inhabitants of the island are believed
to be the indigenous Lucayan people, who
were wiped out by exposure to disease
following the arrival of the Spanish in the
1550s. The Spanish called Andros “Espiritu
Santo,” the Island of the Holy Spirit. Eventually the British colonized the Bahamas and
renamed the island Andros. There are several theories, but many scholars believe the
island was named for Sir Edmund Andros, Commander of Her Majesties Forces in
Barbados in 1672, and eventual governor of New York, Massachusetts and New England.
Others believe that the island was named after the Greek island of Andros, by Greek
sponge fisherman.
Andros Island’s nearby reef, the Tongue of the Ocean trench, and a network of freshwater
blue holes helped make the island a popular SCUBA diving destination early in the sport.
The area was frequented by such well known divers as Jacques Cousteau. Today most
guests visiting Andros are either there to fly fish or dive. Andros has escaped many of the
commercial development projects, and has never really experienced a tourism boom like
many of the other islands in the Bahamas. It remains, for the most part, a sleepy little
community of outgoing Bahamians, surrounded by tremendous natural beauty. You will
not find any high rise resorts or fashionable shopping districts on Andros.

The Fishing
Andros Island is considered by many to be the holy grail of bonefishing. Although one of
the largest islands (technically a group of islands) in The Bahamas, Andros is sparsely
populated by fewer than 7,000 residents, most of which live on North Andros. Tiamo is
located on the north end of South Andros, directly adjacent to the South Bight, which
separates the island from Mangrove Cay, to the North. Although the entire Andros Island
system provides anglers with access to very productive bonefishing flats, many feel that
anglers fishing the waters around South Andros have access to the very best.
The fly-fishing on the South Bight and West Side, both famed Andros locations, is
superb, and the guides know where to locate bonefish. There are even bonefish on the
beach, or you could kayak to several nearby flats if you want to try your luck without a
guide. Keep in mind, however, that “do it yourself” bonefishing is usually very frustrating
for those new to saltwater fly fishing. If catching fish is an important part of your
vacation, then you should book a guide for the days you want to fish. Guides should be
booked well in advance, at the same time you make your reservation. It is highly unlikely
that any of the resort’s expert guides will be available if you wait until the last minute.
Guests that book a fishing package with Orvis Travel can be assured that one of the
resort’s expert guides will be available to fish with them during their stay.
The resort’s location gives anglers access to a wide variety of flats on the east and west
sides of the island, plus the flats in the bight that cuts between South Andros and
Mangrove Cay. Tiamo has some of the best bonefishing in the world at its doorstep.
Whether you are a veteran flats angler or just learning, Tiamo’s ideal location and their
professional guides will set you up to have an exceptional bonefishing experience.
Although South Andros is primarily a bonefishing destination there are some other species
available to fly rodders. Permit are seldom seen on the flats of South Andros. Tarpon are
occasionally seen in mangrove channels and on the west side flats. Anglers traveling
between May and October have the best chance at seeing them. If you have tarpon
equipment, and are traveling in the summer, you might want to bring it with you, just in
case. Barracuda, sharks, jacks, and snapper are abundant, and can make for a fun
diversion, adding a little variety to the day.
www.orvis.com/travel

Blue water fishing is occasionally available at Tiamo. However, the captains are not
experienced with blue-water fly fishing tactics or equipment, so we recommend this type
of fishing only for anglers that are willing to use conventional gear for a shot at sailfish,
wahoo, kingfish, dorado and tuna (yellowfin and blackfin). Tiamo has its own boat, fully
equipped for blue water fishing. Weather permitting, bonefisherman and their guests may
be invited to participate in “exploratory” trips in the late afternoon to catch some dinner.
Longer day trips are also available, but should be coordinated directly with lodge
management upon your arrival, since it is very weather dependant. Although a day of
blue water fishing can be fun, it is important to remember that Tiamo is not a blue water
fishing destination and guests should set their expectations accordingly.
A note about Tiamo’s guides
Guides are typically paired up with two anglers. Guests traveling alone, or with a nonangling companion, can pay the double occupancy fishing rate as long as they are willing
to share a guide with another single angler. Single anglers that request a private guide
must pay the private boat surcharge at the time of booking. Most fly fishers are great
people, but there is no guarantee that you will be paired up with someone that has the
same interests, stamina or skills. For this reason we recommend booking a private boat
package unless you are traveling with another angler.
If you want a non-angling companion to join you on the water, then pay for two fishing
spots. The private boat supplement is a less expensive option than booking two fishing
spots, but covers only one guest in the boat. If your companion is considering joining
you on the boat at any time during your stay, we recommend booking a fishing package
for them. That way, you guarantee availability for them if they want to join you, and a
private boat for yourself when they don’t.
Tiamo’s fly fishing guides are some of the best on Andros, and are committed to serving
the resort’s guests. Tiamo has a full service fishing program, run by a dedicated fly fishing
expert, John Toker. John and his select group of guides do everything they can to ensure
a safe and enjoyable angling experience for every guest. Guests are strongly discouraged
from fishing with outside guides while staying at Tiamo.
When you book a Tiamo guide through Orvis Travel you can rest assured that the guide
is experienced, has safe equipment
and is fun to spend time with. The
resort itself works closely with these
guides and will do everything they
can to make sure you have a positive
experience if you are fishing with
one of their guides.
Other Activities
Tiamo is the perfect place for anglers
and their non-angling companions to
enjoy a variety of activities. With a
www.orvis.com/travel

[email protected]
white sand beach, infinity pool, gym and full service spa some guests will choose to
remain on-site during their entire vacation. However, for those more adventurous, the
resort has full time naturalist guides on staff that lead nature tours in the forest and in the
water. Snorkeling, sea kayaking, sailing and birding are just some of the activities enjoyed
by Tiamo guests. Although many anglers will choose to fish all day, every day, Tiamo is
best enjoyed by those that take some time to participate in some other activities as well.
All of the resort’s regularly scheduled non-angling activities are available to all guests, at no
additional charge.
Getting There
From Nassau: Most guests fly to Nassau and take the local commuter flight to
Mangrove Cay (MAY) or Congo Town (TZN). Either way, it is a short flight that takes
about 20 minutes aboard Western Air’s modern 19 or 33 seat turbo-prop aircraft. If you
choose this option, you should plan on arriving in Nassau by 1:30 PM to make the midafternoon flight. If you would like, Orvis Travel can reserve your seats on the flight from
Nassau to Congo Town for a $25 per ticket convenience charge, or you can book this
flight on your own. Regardless of how you reserve your seats, you will pay for the tickets
with cash when you check in for the flight. The flight schedule and fares are subject to
change, so make sure you check with Orvis Travel or Western Air for updates before
booking your international flights. Currently the fare is approximately $150 per person,
round trip. Return flights from Andros to Nassau are typically scheduled for early
morning, allowing guests enough time to connect to international flights scheduled after
11:00 AM.
A fun and convenient option for getting from Nassau to Tiamo is a float plane charter.
The float plane departs from the executive terminal in Nassau and can deliver passengers
right on the beach in front of the resort. The float plane is perfectly suited to 2 passengers
and their luggage. It is also possible to charter a larger land based aircraft to fly from
Nassau to Congo Town, or Mangrove Cay. Orvis Travel will be happy to provide some
charter recommendations.
From Fort Lauderdale: A good option, if your schedule will allow, is to fly through
Fort Lauderdale and take the Lynx Air flight direct to Congo Town. This flight runs on
Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and should be booked directly with Lynx Air.
Private charters from Ft. Lauderdale are also available.
Regardless of the option you choose, a representative of Tiamo will meet you upon your
arrival in Congo Town or Mangrove Cay and transfer you by car and a short boat ride to
the resort. Call us at 800-547-4322 to get more details about travel to Tiamo.
The Weather
The average temperatures in the Bahamas follow familiar patterns. The temperatures peak
in August, with an average daily high of 89.3° and low of 73.8°. January is the coolest
month of the year with an average daily high of 77.3° and a low of 62.1°.

Rainfall varies throughout the year. The months of November through April experience
the lowest rainfall (between 1.6 and 2.2 inches). June and August yield the highest
rainfall, between 8.5 and 9.2 inches. May, July, September, and October vary from 4.6 to
6.9 inches per month.
The average humidity hovers around 78% year round -- a touch lower in March and
April, and a touch higher in September and October.
Sample Itinerary
Arrival Day
Whether you choose to fly in from Fort Lauderdale or Nassau you will be met at either
the Congo Town or Mangrove Cay airports, and transferred to Tiamo. You will be
driven to a nearby dock where a boat will be waiting to take you to the resort. The entire
transfer typically takes less than 20 minutes and is included in all Orvis Travel packages.
Upon arrival you will be given a brief tour of the resort, and shown to your cottage.
Once you have had a chance to settle in you can relax for a while on the beach, or go for
a quick snorkel off the dock. Cocktails and appetizers will proceed dinner. This is the
perfect time to get to know the resort’s other guests, and maybe even begin relationships
that will last long after your trip to Tiamo is over. Dinner is at a set time and will be
served at around 7:00 PM each evening.
Fishing Days
The day starts early with a traditional breakfast served in the lodge dining room. After
breakfast guests meet with their guides and develop a plan for the day. By 8:00am all
guests are in their boats, and on their way to the flats. Depending on conditions, and
individual preferences, anglers may be casting within 15 minutes of leaving the dock. On
occasion, the trip to the flats may be longer but seldom takes longer than 45 minutes.
After a long day on the water, all boats will plan on getting back to the dock by 4:00pm.
If you want to get some more fishing in you can wade the productive flat in front of the
resort until you have had your fill of fishing for the day.
Many of the guests visiting Tiamo are
not there to fish. The resort’s naturalist
guides offer daily outings where guests
can explore and enjoy the area’s natural
beauty. Whether you want to snorkel
“The Crack” or take a sea kayak to
explore the mangroves, the staff is there
to help get the most out of your
experience. Guided nature activities are
open to all guests while staying at
Tiamo. If you are interested in joining
an excursion just mention it to a
member of staff the evening before, and they will make sure to include you.

Regardless of what you did today, you can end it by relaxing with a Kalik (The Beer of
The Bahamas), glass of wine or a cocktail before dinner. The lodge has a very good
selection of beer, wine and liquors available for purchase. If you have a specific drink of
choice, you are welcome to bring a bottle with you.
Departure Day
You will be transferred to Congo Town or Mangrove Cay in time to catch your flight
back to Fort Lauderdale or Nassau. It may also be possible to visit another lodge after
your stay at Tiamo. Orvis Travel has a wide variety of options available in The Bahamas
and we will be happy to make a recommendation and handle the arrangements.
