Media Center
Spring 2017
Equipment
Use
Policy
Access to the Media Center is granted to all students, faculty and
staff with a valid SAIC photo ID card. Reservations are recommended to secure resources during high volume times. Remember to be
prompt. Reservations are held for an hour after the requested time
and then automatically deleted if not picked up. Allow at least 15
minutes to check out the equipment. When returning, wait until the
gear is checked back in on the computer and inform the worker or
Manager on duty of any issues.
Access
There are 2 types of access for Media Center Light Kits, GENERAL
and AUTHORIZED. General Access kits can be obtained regardless of
prior technical experience or department affiliation- they are simple
and easy to use. Authorized Access kits are a little more complex and
require a training session prior to checkout. Training Schedules are
posted bi-weekly in/around all Media Centers after the add/drop
period during regular Fall and Spring Semesters, and can be done by
request during Winter and Summer by contacting mcexperts@saic.
edu. Interested Patrons can sign up normally with a Media Center
worker.
Fines
SAIC enforces a fine policy designed to ensure fair equipment access
opportunities to the maximum amount of individuals. Charges occur
during instances of lateness, loss, damage and abandonment. Those
who receive a fine will be unable to use the Media Center until it is
resolved. Amounts are calculated to the minute based on a per day
(24 Hr) flat rate and can be paid at any Media Center location or the
Bursar’s Office. Rates vary with equipment types.
Checkout
Specifications
Light Kits can be checked out for a maximum of 3 Days. A single
renewal of an additional 3 days is also possible availability pending.
Renewals can be done over the phone or in person before the return
time and cannot be renewed if already late. It is strongly recommended to request a renewal with plenty of lead time in case the loan
period cannot be extended and all equipment must come back.
Partial renewals (attempting to extend only some of the items on a
single checkout) are not possible.
If equipment is needed for a longer duration of time outside of
normal policies a Special Request can be submitted at Greenlight.
artic.edu for review at least a week in advance.

Saftey
Tips
-Make sure to let the lights cool before repacking, otherwise the
knobs could melt and result in a damage fine.
-Never touch any of the bulbs.
-Do not use non-theatrical Gels with the lights.
-It is advised to make sure the light heads work before leaving the
building.
-Always make sure that the power switches are turned in the off
position before plugging in the lights.
-Never touch the lamps while they are on.
-If many lights are needed, use extension cords to connect to distant
outlets to distribute the electric load. Connecting too much wattage
to one circuit may blow the breaker or fuse. An average circuit can
handle 3 (or 4) 500 watt bulbs.
-Never use thin extension cords with the lights. Use thick extension
cords with a three-prong plug.
-It is advised to test the light stands before attaching the light heads.
While setting up make sure the legs of the light stands are extended
so the bar is perpendicular to the floor, and extended from the
bottom up so there is less weight on top.
-Properly secure the cord by wrapping it around the stand and securing it under one leg.
