Grade 7 Request Board 2015­2016 Full Year Courses: Band (Brass) 7 This course is a continuation of Band (Brass) 6. Common brass instruments include the trombone, French horn, tuba, trumpet and baritone. The musical and technical requirements become more demanding as you continue to learn more about your instrument and play harder music. As you become a better and better player, the musical world opens up to you. You’ve done the hard work in learning your instrument, now reap the rewards of your work and become a better player and enjoy. Students who have not taken band in grade 6 are admitted into this option only through a conversation with the band teacher and permission is granted. Since learning a band instrument is a developmental skill, this will be a full year course. Weekly rehearsals on Tuesday noon hours are required. This course is a prerequisite for continuing in band in grade 8 and beyond. Band (Woodwind) 7 This course is a continuation of Band (Woodwind) 6. Common woodwind instruments include flutes and clarinets. The musical and technical requirements become more demanding as you continue to learn more about your instrument and play harder music. Students will study the following topics: School, Weather, People Around Me, and four Holidays and Celebrations. The various language activities they take part in will be based on the context, the communicative task and the different information and communication technologies that are available. This is an exploration of French language and culture through oral, written, visual and multimedia learning and inquiry. This is a year long academic option. Courses by Term: Art 7 Students will build upon skills and media technique in two and three­dimensional format. Colour theory and transformation of form will be explored. Students will examine cultural impact of art over time and will be provocation for expressing their cultural and societal understandings. The basic vocabulary associated with art criticism will be introduced and explored. Construction 7 Students will progress through levels in order to refine their skills in woodworking. Levels are not dependent on grade level but rather dependent on each student’s progression of skills. Students will be working on a pass/fail system and once classwork and projects are completed for a level, they will move on to the next. Grade 7 Request Board 2015­2016 Drama 7 This course provides students with opportunities to develop a positive self­image and confidence through the participation in and reflection on a variety of dramatic experiences. This includes both group and individual skill development through a variety of teacher and student­led theatre games, as well as focused activities that foster growths in applications of voice, movement, improvisation, memory, stage awareness and beginning script work. Environmental & Outdoor Education (ENVOE) 7 This class is a continuation of the grade 6 ENVOE program, further giving students the opportunity to participate in a variety of outdoor activities as well as spend time looking at environmental issues and ecosystems in Canada and beyond. In grade 7, topics that could be covered include an introduction to pursuits in the front ranges of the Rockies, in­depth map reading, map creation, and orienteering. Trips may include such things like snowshoeing, day hiking and visiting a climbing centre. Students choosing this course must enjoy spending time in the outdoors and have an interest in the environment. Completion of ENVOE 6 is recommended but not required. Film & Media ­ Communications Technology 7 Students will develop an understanding of various documentary film making skills and techniques. The course will focus on the application of concepts within a technological context. Students will create a documentary to communicate their ideas and to demonstrate their understanding of key concepts. This course will provide opportunities for students to engage in active, hands­on learning with digital tools. Foods & Fashion 7 Students will learn how to enjoy cooking and baking through different activities designed to introduce and develop basic culinary skills. Kitchen safety, nutrition, and meal planning will be explored. Students will also develop basic fabrication skills with sewing production and design. Leadership 7 Service­learning helps young people become engaged thinkers in solving problems within their schools and communities as part of their academic studies or other type of intentional learning activity. This course will provide opportunities for students to develop a range of service skills, from acts of kindness and caring, to community stewardship, to civic action, all of which are part of being an ethical citizen. This course will be taught within a framework that allows students to: ● Explore, recognize and realize their potential for leadership ● Apply leadership practices to authentic tasks ● Refine strategies for engaging others in the school and community Grade 7 Request Board 2015­2016 Learning Strategies 7 In this course, students will receive extra time to practice math concepts, reading and writing skills. Students will also work to develop more independence through organizational and study skills. Some class time will also be allotted to finishing and refining work from core classes. Students will learn to evaluate their own work, and make adjustments to improve their understanding, performance and to set and achieve personal goals. This option class is recommended for students who require extra time and/or support with concepts in their core classes. Students will work with peers and their teacher in order to successfully learn about themselves as learners. Military History 7 ­ War and Society in Canada and the World This course provides students the opportunity to understand the interconnections of society and military actions. Students who take this course will begin to understand the role of military in the evolution of Canada. The course will trace the manner in which Canada developed from colony to nation­state through its involvement in domestic and international conflicts. Students will learn about Canada's involvement in modern­day conflict zones and international peacekeeping missions. It is anticipated that this course will facilitate unique opportunities to situate and understand the experience of our namesake, Captain Nichola Goddard, within the broader context of Canadian Military History.
