Refugee update: The children whose lives have no sparkle
THE October half term is a time for fun here in the UK, but for thousands of refugee children
fleeing wars in the Middle East, the cold autumn weather could spell disaster.
The president of the European Commission, JeanClaude Juncker, has warned that thousands of refugee
families will freeze to death in Eastern Europe unless
solutions are found urgently.
As the civil war in Syria worsens, tens of thousands of
men, women and children are fleeing refugee camps
in the region to find a new life in Europe. But there are
growing fears that many could soon die in the makeshift
camps on freezing hilltops and by rivers unless they are
given warm shelter soon.
Many refugees are making their way into the European
Union (EU) through Turkey and into countries including
Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro. A spokesman for
Médecins Sans Frontières, a medical charity, said there
was an urgent need for hot food, housing and washing
facilities for these migrants.
Just eight out of 28 EU member nations have offered
emergency equipment and experts to help deal with the
situation, more than a month after they were all asked to
contribute. Dozens of adults and children died last week
as boats and dinghies were damaged by rough seas on
the crossing from Libya into Europe. Continued on page 2.
