Wellness Unit Learning Objectives Health Triangle I can identify the three components of the health triangle and can identify at least two healthy habits for each component. I understand the difference between the term Health and Wellness. Communication I can identify the most effective style of communication (Assertive, Passive and Aggressive). I know and can give examples of both verbal and non-verbal communication. I know why it is important and how to use an “I” messages in order to speak my point of view. I know the term for when ones words say one thing but body language says another. “Mixed Messages”. I know how one’s body language effects their communication. Decision Making I can identify the three C’s to decision making. Clarify, Consider and Choose. Character I can identify the six character traits that were discussed in class and be able to give an example of a person demonstrating each trait. I know what factors go into shaping a person’s character. (life experiences/role models) Emotions I list and explain at least four different emotions. I understand why it is common to have mood swings during my teen year. (Hormones) I know what Defense Mechanisms are and how they can at times be helpful and harmful to deal with emotions. Stress I can define the term stress. I can define the term stressor. I can explain what occurs in the body during the fight or flight response. I can list at least three strategies for coping with stress. Hygiene I know the outer layer of skin is called and the inner layer of skin. (epidermis and dermis) I know I can protect my skin my using sunscreen. I know what the largest organ in the body is. (Skin) I know that UV rays can harm the skin. I know what cause Acne. I know what the symptoms of Dandruff are and how to help control it. I know the difference between Tartar and Plaque which are substances that can form on teeth. I can identify the disease that occurs if you don’t care for your teeth properly and the gums become red and sore. I can identify the best way to care for my teeth. I know the difference between someone you is nearsighted and someone who is farsighted. FITT/Goal Setting When setting goals I know they need to be meaningful, realistic and measurable. I know what every letter in the FITT principle stands for (frequency, intensity, type and time). I know that that the more intense an activity is the more the heart has to work. The more intense activity someone does the stronger the heart becomes.
