On behalf ofthetheSOAP
2017 Annual Meeting
Program Committee, we would like to invite you to the
49th Annual Meeting of SOAP in Bellevue, Washington
May 10-14th, 2017. The theme of this year’s meeting is
“Beyond the Obstetric Suite” and we are confident that
the meeting will appeal to both academic and private
practice anesthesiologists. Invited speakers at the SOAP
2017 Annual Meeting are renowned within the fields
of obstetric anesthesia, obstetrics and maternal health.
In addition, international speakers will add some global
perspective to our program.
The Gertie Marx/FAER Lecture will be given by
Ansgar M. Brambrink, Professor and Chair at Columbia
University who will cover aspects of fetal neurotoxicity
relevant to obstetric anesthesiologists. We will have
a plenary lecture given by Jerker Liljestrand from the
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. His lecture “Is
Birth Becoming Safer in the World - and What Can We
Do?” promises to be both enlightening and thought
provoking. This year’s Gerard W. Ostheimer Lecture:
What's New in Obstetric Anesthesia? will be given by
Brian Bateman, Associate Professor at Harvard Medical
School. Cynthia Wong, Professor and Chair at University
of Iowa will be giving this year’s prestigious Fred Hehre
Lecture. We are also delighted to be hosting the first
ever SOAP Chinese Symposium on Obstetric Anesthesia
on May 10th 2017, the day prior to the start of the
meeting.
Talks and panels will highlight cutting-edge topics
including point-of-care ultrasound techniques,
obstetric hemorrhage management, enhanced recovery
after cesarean delivery protocols, and programmedintermittent labor epidural analgesia. For abstract
presentations, we have decided to present a hybrid
model where both paper posters will be displayed,
and electronic posters presented. The research hour
will consist of a panel of experts that will discuss the
pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs in
pregnancy, and aspects of drug transfer to the fetus
and breastfeeding neonates. Experts in social media
(Larry Chu, Professor, and Edward Mariano, Professor,
Stanford University School of Medicine and Ronald
George, Associate Professor, Dalhousie University)
have been invited to help attendees use social media to
improve care for and better educate pregnant women.
We will be providing Mandarin real-time translations of
key talks during the main program. Please also consider
attending our excellent pre-meeting workshops: Patient
Safety Workshop: Leading Systems Change, The
Use of Ultrasound in Obstetric Anesthesia: Vascular
Access, Neuraxial Anesthesia, TAP Block and Gastric
Assessment Workshop, Focused Cardiac Ultrasound in
the Management of the High Risk Parturient Workshop
and Becoming a Successful Obstetric Anesthesiology
Leader Workshop.
The meeting takes place at a superb venue, the Hyatt
Regency Bellevue. Bellevue is only 10 miles from
downtown Seattle, and a shuttle service will provide
easy access for those wanting to explore. We will also
provide a fun-filled social program with events for all to
enjoy. We really look forward to seeing you in Bellevue,
Washington May 10-14th, 2017, for a meeting that
promises to deliver the highest quality educational and
scientific material for both clinicians and researchers.

Mission Statement
The Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP)
was founded in 1968 to provide a forum for discussion of
problems unique to the peripartum period. SOAP is comprised of
anesthesiologists, obstetricians, pediatricians, and basic scientists
who share an interest in the care of the pregnant patient and the
newborn.
The mission of this Society is to improve the pregnancy-related
outcomes of women and neonates through the support of obstetric
anesthesiology research, the provision of education to its members,
other providers, and pregnant women, and the promotion of
excellence in clinical anesthetic care.
A membership in SOAP is an opportunity to meet people who share
your interests, and to stimulate improvements in health care for
pregnant patients.

Self-Parking Helpful Tips:
• The hotel’s main entrance is located on 900
Bellevue Way NE, Bellevue, WA 98004. •
Our staff would be delighted to welcome you
and help you unload your luggage.
•
If you prefer to proceed directly to our selfparking without any assistance, we recommend
utilizing the entrance on Northeast 10th Street,
marked Bellevue Place, as it is the easiest to
access.
•
Once you head down the ramp and past the
gate, take an immediate right and you will see
the Wintergarden Elevators on your right-hand
side. If P3 is full continue straight to the back
of the garage, and you will see a ramp on your
left which you can use to access the lower
levels of parking. •
The Wintergarden Elevators are the most
direct access into the center of the lobby.
•
The Hyatt Ballroom Elevators are our second
choice, and will take you to the first floor of
our Olympic Tower. They are located directly
behind the Wintergarden Elevators when you
are looking straight at them.
•
Upon check-in you will receive a parking pass
valid for your stay, which will grant you in and
out privileges at the gate on paid nights.

The SOAP 49th Annual Meeting
will be Paperless
Printed documents will not be available at the meeting.
Documents will be available on the website should you
wish to print them beforehand or to download them to an
iPad or other tablet device before the meeting.
Making a meeting paperless yields the benefit of
considerably reducing the cost and the carbon footprint
of the meeting. A paperless meeting also makes it easier
for meeting participants to locate and store documents
and allows for faster preparation and distribution of
conference materials.
To facilitate the paperless meeting, meeting attendees are
requested to follow these suggestions:
• Meeting participants should bring their own computing
devices – extra computers are not available for use
during the meeting. Questions concerning rental
of any computer equipment may be directed to the
Hyatt Regency Bellevue AV department. The Hyatt
Regency Bellevue also has a business center for printing
documents.
• Wireless internet is available in the meeting rooms and
guest rooms. Power sources (power strips) will NOT be
available in the meeting rooms. Please be sure your
portable devices are fully charged before coming to
the meeting, or print your documents in advance of the
meeting.
• Each meeting participant should include a current e-mail
address when completing the meeting registration form
in order to be able to receive correspondence about the
meeting materials.

Seattle Attractions
Seattle Underground Tour
Bill Speidel’s Underground
Tour is Seattle’s most unusual
attraction, a humorous stroll
through intriguing subterranean
storefronts and sidewalks
entombed when the city rebuilt
on top of itself after the Great Fire
of 1889. The 75-minute guided
walking tour begins beneath
Doc Maynard’s Public House,
then spills into historic Pioneer
Square, Seattle’s birthplace,
before plunging underground for
an exclusive, time-capsule view
of the buried city. It’s the only
way to tour the interconnecting
tunnels of the world-famous
Seattle Underground—don’t
be fooled by imposters. All the
while, tour guides regale you with
sidesplitting stories our pioneers
didn’t want you to hear. It’s
history with punch lines!
Pike Place Market
Open year-round, this is Seattle’s
most iconic attraction — and it’s
filled with tasty treats. There’s
so much to love about Pike
Place Market. Aisles of gleaming
fruits and vegetables, tables
overflowing with fresh floral
bouquets, and booth after booth
selling all manner of locally
made jewelry, clothing and gifts.
It’s also a great place to enjoy
many fantastic eateries serving
prepared dishes. When you’re
not sure what kind of food you’re
in the mood to eat, just head to
Pike Place Market and sample
a little of everything or hop on
one of several market tours that
focus on food, history, or a little of
both. There’s also the whole fishthrowing thing, too.
Space Needle
Most definitely a bucket list item
for many, the Space Needle is
certainly Seattle’s most iconic
structure. Journey skyward for
amazing views, fine dining and
an experience you’ll never forget.
At a height of 605 feet, the
Space Needle boasts fabulous
360 degree views that include
Mt. Rainier, Puget Sound, the
Olympic and Cascade Mountains,
the beautiful city of Seattle and
beyond.
Museum of Flight
As the longtime home of major
airline manufacturing companies,
Seattle is no stranger to the
miracle of flight. Little wonder
that one of the finest aviation
museums in the nation is located
here. More than 150 historic
artifacts are on display at the
Museum of Flight, including
the legendary SR-71 Blackbird
(capable of speeds up to Mach
3 and altitudes above 85,000
feet), an original Concorde jetliner
and the actual 707 jet used as
Air Force One during the ’50s,
’60s and early ’70s. Many of
the exhibits are hands-on and
perfect for kids, including flight
simulators, a control tower and
the Kid’s Flight Zone, where they
can strap on flight gear and test
their piloting skills.
Seattle Aquarium
The Seattle Aquarium features
a stunning 40-foot, 55,000-lb.
viewing window that looks into
a 120,000-gallon aquarium filled
with salmon, colorful rockfish,
vibrant sea anemones, and other
native Washington marine life.
Three times a day, divers take to
the waters wearing specialized
masks that allow them to interact
with and answer questions from
the audience. Other exhibits
include two touching tide pools
filled with sea anemones and
sunflower sea star, a pacific coral
reef exhibit, marine mammals
and an underwater dome, the
aquarium’s largest exhibit. The
aquarium is located on Seattle’s
waterfront at Pier 59.
Museum of History and
Industry
From its humble beginnings in
1911, the Museum of History
& Industry (MOHAI) has grown
into the largest private heritage
organization in the State of
Washington with a collection of
over 4 million objects, documents,
and photographs from the Puget
Sound region’s past. MOHAI
uses these artifacts along with
cutting edge, hands-on interactive
experiences to make history come
alive through the unforgettable
stories of the men and women
who built Seattle from wilderness
to world-class city. In addition to
museum exhibits, MOHAI hosts
a variety of award-winning youth
and adult public programs and
consistently collaborates with
community partners on local
events and activities. Ultimately,
MOHAI strives to connect
individuals with the region’s
rich history and inspire them to
continue to make the community
a strong, vibrant, and sustainable
place for all to enjoy.

Bellevue Arts Museum
510 Bellevue Way NE

Because we know many foodies attend the SOAP meeting, the
theme of this year’s banquet is ‘Eat, Drink, and Be Merry’! Focusing
on local-sourced food, wine, and beer, this is a MUST ATTEND
event! You will enjoy
superb dishes served

award-winning Seattle

venue only 2 blocks from
the hotel.
About the Bellevue Arts Museum
Bellevue Arts Museum (BAM) is the Pacific Northwest's center for
the exploration of art, craft, and design. The Museum's mission
is guided by the belief that craft and design are essential to the
conversation on art and are equally transformative. From objects
made for everyday use to cutting-edge sculpture, furniture, and
jewelry, BAM celebrates the creative process, skill, and vision of
today's most talented makers. International exhibitions are placed
side-by-side some of the region's most promising artists, fostering
global exchange and providing a platform for thought-provoking
ideas.
During the 2017
SOAP Annual Meeting
Banquet, The Contact
– Quilts of the Sierra
Nevada by Ann Johnston
will be one of the
featured exhibits. The
Contact features 30 of
Ann Johnston’s largescale quilts inspired by
the California Sierra
Nevada mountain range.
The Sierra Nevadas
are a place of power
and fascination for
many people who have
experienced it. The term
“contact” is used to
describe the place where
geologic units touch, and
it’s an inescapable theme
in Johnston’s quilts.
Through this body of
work, Johnston explores
the sunlit white granite peaks, and the dark mines and machinery
of the California Gold Rush. Her connection to the Sierra Nevada is
strong—her family has held a mining claim near Tioga Pass since the
1800s—and it comes to life in the exhibition.
Johnston uses a broad array of literal, abstract, and purely
imaginative imagery. Each quilt is designed and made from cloth
that Ann Johnston has dyed, painted, or printed herself, and
constructed using a range of construction techniques, some
remaining as a whole cloth, others, pieced and appliquéd. These
works demonstrate a mastery with which Johnston uses different
patterns, textures, and processes in her fabrics to produce
fascinating pieces that draw one in, powerful on their own and
cohesive as a series. #AnnJohnstonBAM #BellevueArtsMuseum
