ELA Curriculum At‐A‐Glance 3rd Six‐Weeks 2010‐2011 Grade 12 Reading Writing Oral/Written Conventions Research Listening & Speaking Required Reading: • "Speech Before Her Troops" by Queen Elizabeth I • "Sonnets 1, 35, and 79 by Edmund Spenser and "Sonnets 31 and 39" by Sir Philip Sidney • "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" by Christopher Marlowe and "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd by Sir Walter Raleigh • "The Tragedy of Macbeth" by William Shakespeare Supplemental Reading: • "Sonnet, 29, Sonnet 106, Sonnet 116, Sonnet 130" by William Shakespeare • No Fear Graphic Novels: Macbeth Literary Focus: • Drama • Figurative Language • Theme • Persuasive Techniques • Emotional, Logical and Ethical Appeals Students shall engage in a variety of writing experiences to include but not limited to: • Persuasive Essay with a research component • Journal Writing Grammar shall not be taught in isolation, but rather within mentor texts or students’ own writing pieces. Continue to build vocabulary based on the district vocabulary list and vocabulary in literature. *This six weeks’ emphasis will be on evaluating conventions within the context of the writing process as students work on a persuasive/research paper. Research Writing: Students will prepare a persuasive essay with a strong research component. Students will use MLA documentation. Students will utilize the Big 6 Research Process: 1. Task definition 2. Information seeking strategies 3. Location and access 4. Use of information 5. Synthesis 6. Evaluation Students will create persuasive speeches based on their research papers. Students will break into small groups, ideally groups of four and share, evaluate and discuss their speeches with an evaluation form.
