Children like Haley will receive this gift of hope. Haley’s mother had noticed a
limp that came and went, but when her daughter’s trembling hand couldn’t lift a
dinner spoon to her mouth, Christina took Haley to the pediatrician. He sent them
to a local hospital, where tests revealed a mass on Haley’s brain. After surgery to
remove the tumor, doctors identified the mass as a medulloblastoma and Haley
was referred to St. Jude, where her family rediscovered hope.
“St. Jude is like its own little world,” said Christina. “It’s a place where they
bring the best medical professionals and the nicest, kindest people together.”
At St. Jude, Haley received six months of high-dose intravenous chemotherapy,
followed by six months of oral chemotherapy at home.
Recently, Haley’s family was devastated to learn that her cancer had returned.
They again turned to St. Jude, where her treatment includes radiation and
chemotherapy. Haley, now 4, is responding well to her treatment and enjoys
Disney® princess movies like Cinderella. “St. Jude takes all
your worries away, so you can focus on your child,”

Anthony Lawrence
age 8, ependymoma
In fall 2008, Anthony Lawrence began complaining of leg pains. His father had suffered
growing pains in his legs as a child, so his parents were not overly concerned. When flu-like
symptoms landed Anthony Lawrence in his pediatrician’s office, he was referred to a local
children’s hospital.
There, tests revealed Anthony Lawrence suffered from a brain tumor. He underwent surgery
to remove the tumor. Because of its location on the brain stem, the tumor could not be completely
removed. The tumor was identified as an ependymoma. Anthony Lawrence was then referred
to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for his continuing care. At St. Jude, Anthony Lawrence
received 33 radiation treatments, and St. Jude continues to monitor his tumor.
Anthony Lawrence is a bright, thoughtful child. He’s also a performer. He likes to sing and
dance and has memorized the capital and motto of all 50 states.

In 2009, Elise’s parents noticed that she had stopped growing. They kept an eye on her, fully expecting a growth spurt
at any time. But by February 2010, Elise still had not grown so her mom took her to an endocrinologist who ordered an MRI.
The results showed that Elise’s pituitary gland was enlarged. She was prescribed medicine, and the doctor monitored her. In
February 2011, another MRI revealed that the pituitary gland had gotten even larger. A biopsy was ordered and the results
showed that Elise suffered from a type of tumor called a germinoma, which was hidden within her pituitary gland. Elise was
referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for treatment. At St. Jude, Elise’s treatment has included chemotherapy and
radiation. Elise loves dance, especially jazz, and is looking forward to resuming her lessons when she’s done with treatment.

Hayley
age 19, osteosarcoma
When Hayley was 10 years old, one of her knees began to ache. Her doctor thought it was just
a sprain, but a few months later, her family realized that a knot under her skin was the cause of
Hayley’s pain. Tests soon revealed devastating news: Hayley suffered from osteosarcoma, a type
of bone cancer. Her parents searched the Internet for information about osteosarcoma and found
the website for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. They asked their doctor for a referral.
At St. Jude, Hayley’s treatment included chemotherapy and a limb-saving surgery. She is
now finished with treatment and returns to St. Jude for annual checkups. Today, Hayley attends
college on a full scholarship and is majoring in Biology and Spanish. She is pre-med and wants to
be an oncologist and work at St. Jude one day.

age 8, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)
When Anna was just a year old, she was found to suffer from acute lymphoblastic
leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer. She received chemotherapy
at a local hospital and finished treatment in 2007. Two years later, Anna’s family was
devastated to learn that the cancer had returned. A family member was familiar with
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and encouraged Anna’s parents to ask their
doctor for a referral.
At St. Jude, Anna was placed on a two-and-a-half to three-year treatment plan that
includes daily oral and weekly intravenous chemotherapy. Anna has responded well
to treatment, and her mother is grateful for the care she has received. “There are no
words to explain this place,” she said. “St. Jude is filled with hope, love and support.”
Anna participates in the St. Jude school program and likes to spell. She also likes
to color and sing karaoke.

Micah, age 10, neuroblastoma
Micah was a cute, bubbly baby girl who always had energy to spare. However, when she was 11 months old, she got sick
and lost the ability to stand. Doctors in Micah’s hometown determined that she had a large tumor wrapped around her spine.
Micah’s family was referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where Micah was quickly diagnosed by doctors with
stage IV neuroblastoma, a solid tumor affecting the neurological system. After several months of surgeries and radiation,
98 percent of the tumor was removed.
Micah has been cancer free for several years now, and she was recently enrolled in the After Completion of Therapy
program at St. Jude, the mission of which is to help patients stay healthy as they continue their journey as a survivor posttreatment. When she grows up, Micah wants to be a designer and an actress.
