Mary Lawrence, Bianca Goddard Mysteries Author Thursday, March 2, 2017 6:30pm Mary Lawrence, Buxton resident and author of the Bianca Goddard Mysteries, will visit Baxter Memorial Library on Thursday, March 2, 2017. Mary Lawrence grew up in Southern Indiana and attended Indiana University, graduating with a specialty degree in Cytotechnology, and moved to Maine shortly thereafter. Cytotechnology is the microscopic interpretation of cells to detect cancer and other abnormalities. Featuring the daughter of an infamous alchemist and set in Tudor London during the final years of Henry VIII's reign, the series follows Bianca Goddard in her pursuit of science to create medicines to help the sick. Along the way, Bianca must deal with a most unhealthy dose of murder and mayhem. Titles in the series include The Alchemist’s Daughter, Death of an Alchemist, and Death at St. Vedast. Take Your Child to the Library Day Saturday, February 4th Take Your Child to the Library Day is an international event that was started as a desire to "raise community awareness about the importance of the library in the life of a child, and promotes library services and programs for children and families." All are welcome! Baxter Memorial Library is proud to be a donation site for the Gorham Food Pantry. Just inside our lobby is a grocery cart where you can drop off non-perishable food items and personal products for families in need. Plus, we are now accepting book donations for the food pantry through the Book Fairy Pantry Project. Check out the new box next to the lobby door. February Break Fun in Youth Services Mad Science of Maine Tuesday, February 21st at 10am Mad Science is visiting the library to present a Fundamental Forces workshop. Fundamental Forces introduces children to the pushes and pulls that make the universe tick. Gravity, inertia, and centripetal force are some key concepts they discover along the way. Some exciting, hands-on investigations into forces include the bike wheel gyroscope, a coin-spinning vortex, and the balloon centrifuge. This program is geared towards grades K - 5. Spaces are limited so please call the library at 222-1190 to reserve your spot. Winter Meltdown Wednesday, February 22nd at 10am Join us to create a melty craft. We will draw an original picture or trace an image on 'shrinky dink' paper and cut out your design. A librarian will place your creation in a toaster oven and watch as your art shrinks down in the heated toaster oven. Allow cool down and take your masterpiece home. Geared to ages 6 through 18. 3-D Snowflake Craft Thursday, February 23rd at 1pm Visit the library to make a beautiful 3-D snowflake craft. Geared toward ages 8 to 18.
