Culturally, January is the beginning of the new year. One aspect of the Prayer Book that I cherish is prayers for secular or ordinary occasions, and there are several prayers that are fitting for this entry into the year of 2017. I have asked each of our parish priests to pick one prayer. I believe this prayer “for the Diversity of Races and Culture” (BCP 840) is perfect for us as we enter this new year: O God, who created all peoples in your image, we thank you for the wonderful diversity of races and cultures in this world. Enrich our lives by ever-widening circles of fellowship, and show us your presence in those who differ most from us, until our knowledge of your love is made perfect in our love for all your children; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Reverend Amy George believes the prayer “for Wisdom” (Daily Prayer for all Seasons 6) is a good one for 2017: Wise and loving God, you bear us for joy. In humility, you show us wisdom. Enfold us at this hour with the knowledge born of love. Awaken within us the desire to know rightly and the will to live justly, with grace and generosity. Amen. The Reverend Broderick Greer believes the prayer “for the whole Church” (BCP 291) is fitting for 2017: O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquillity the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Happy new year, and know that your priests pray for God to bless all of us with wisdom and love in 2017. –Richard Lawson Rector's Forum January 8, 22, and 29 The Rev. We give thanks to the makers, bakers, celebrity waiters and pianist, cooks, sales folks and customers that spent a fun Saturday buying hand-made items, eating fabulous chicken spaghetti and sorting through the trash and treasures tables. It was a happy, yet sad time, as Father Richard opened the Bazaar with a prayer and our stories of people, decorations and items from Bazaars past. Charlotte Jones has the honor of being the longest continuing volunteer, since 1971. We are proud to announce a final profit of $4,850 from the 2016 Bazaar and 2015 “mini” Bazaar. Normally, we pack up the “good” stuff for next year, but the Bazaar ladies wanted to donate all the items to close out the event. Four tables of Trash and Treasures were saved for our More Than a Meal guests to have a free shopping event. Huge smiles and thank yous abounded as grocery sacks were filled. All the Christmas items were bagged in Christmas sacks and delivered by Crossmen to the 48 recipients of Thanksgiving turkeys and food. Picture frames went to the Boy Scouts for photos/certificates in the future Scout Lodge. Books went to Friends of the Library and 3 Little Free Libraries. Baby clothes and knit sweaters went to The Exchange Club Family Center. Pillows and afghans went to Serenity Nursing Home. Knit caps and scarves went to More Than a Meal for Christmas distribution. Pillows and kitchen items went to Dorothy Day House. Teen appropriate items went to Girl’s, Inc. Distribution Day was certainly a feel-good day for the ladies and all the agencies. A special thank you to the Pastoral Care Team for honoring the Bazaar group with a lovely luncheon. The funds have been allocated as follows: $1000 to Troop 34 for the Scout Lodge Campaign in honor of the years that Bazaar ladies worked in the old, green house. $500 each to Veterans Administration Voluntary Services and St. Vincent de Paul Food Program. $400 each to Memphis Union Mission, Shelby County Books from Birth, Real Good Dog Rescue, CCV A Way Out, Outreach Housing and Community, Inc., Door of Hope, and Salvation Army Woman’s Center. The ladies have reinvented their purpose. The new Heart and Hands Group will meet weekly on Tuesday from 10–1 for fellowship, sandwiches, short spiritual remarks by the clergy and our continue hand work. We will knit warm items for our MTAM guests, make pillowcase dresses for the girls in Haiti, and create patchwork palettes for the homeless. With happy hearts and busy hands, we can support our pastoral and community needs. Come join us January 3rd in the H&H room, lower level across from the elevator. A special thank you from the Pastoral Care Team. They honored the Bazaar group with a lovely luncheon. The Messenger | January 2017| 5 Christian Education For Children & Youth The first step was successful. 9:30 until 10:15 am We’ve passed our first goal of raising at least $50,000 by year-end, so the project is a go. We’re not planning to build it anymore, we’re building it. A place for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. A place for Brownies and Girls Scouts. A place to discover, to learn, to grow. A place of our own. But the next step is up to everybody we haven’t heard from yet. Please take that step. Nursery We still have a ways to go to fully fund both construction and maintenance, to be sure we build what we need and we secure it for the future. 3-6 yrs. (Pre-K, JK and SK) Location: Atrium I (Green Room) Lead Catechist: Julie Horn; Assistant: Teresa Betts We want as many people as possible to particpate so can we can truly say that we built this together. Support so far has ranged from a benefactor’s single check for $25,000 to a Cub’s pledge of $10 a year for five years. They both gave what they could because of what scouting has meant to them. For the next couple of weeks, you can spread your taxdeductible gift out in five payments over five years, but you have to make your first payment by December 31. This link will allow you to make your donation online and schedule it as you would like. The link also includes a printable Scout Lodge Pledge Form if you’d like to make your donation by check. Many applications were received, and the members prayerfully reviewed and discussed each one. Memphis is blessed to have an abundance of extraordinary individuals and organizations working to better our community and world. The funds the committee is able to provide are meant to be meaningful, useful, and contribute significantly to the organization's operational goals and abilities. When making funding decisions, the committee looks for organizations with volunteer opportunities for GSL parishioners, and ideals that align with our mission to "feed the hungry, clothe and shelter the needy, care for the sick and visit the imprisoned, as well as the Christian call to be an instrument of healing in our broken world." On Tuesday, November 21, members of the Crossmen participated in the distribution of Thanksgiving food items provided by Feed the Needy of Memphis. This year we reached out to many of the community organizations with whom the Outreach ministry partners, and delivered food in many different areas of the city. The ability to personally deliver the food to families provided not only a blessing to them, but to the volunteers as well. The organizations who will receive funding in 2017 are: Church Health, Door of Hope, Dorothy Day House of Hospitality, Friends For Life, GSL More Than A Meal, Memphis Child Advocacy Center, Memphis Exchange Club Family Center, Memphis Teacher Residency, Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association, Neighborhood Christian Center, Outreach Housing and Community, PorterLeath, Samaritan Counseling Center, Shelby County Books From Birth, and St. George’s Independent School. To find out more about Outreach at GSL or ways to become more connected within the community, please contact Outreach co-chairs James Drummond ([email protected]) or Katie Savage ([email protected]). The Outreach Committee looks forward to keeping this tradition with Feed the Needy. It not only helps us fulfill our mission, but offers fellowship and volunteer opportunities for parish members that allows us to stay connected with the needs of our community. Our participation was only a small part of the larger initiative which helps feed families across the MidSouth. Room in the Inn Clothes Closet Calvary Episcopal Church hosts A Room in the Inn every Saturday night and they serve over 200 breakfasts to homeless people in the downtown area every Sunday morning. These community programs at Calvary are in need of our donations. They are in need of Men’s & Women’s Clothing: Old jeans, socks (even single socks), underwear, shoes or sneakers (size 9 or larger for men), sweaters, T-shirts, coats, slacks, warm jackets, rain gear, warm hats and gloves, blankets, sleeping bags, and toiletries. A box for you to place your donations in will be located at the GSL Lemaster entrance through January. Breen Bland, Andy Nix and Ed Hord deliver Thanksgiving food boxes. 8 | www.gracestlukes.org Food Pantry Facts By Juan Fuentes It is with love and gratitude that we acknowledge the generosity of our parishioners, the time and commitment of our volunteers, the generosity of GSL students, especially the second and fifth grades, and the many organizations and individuals who collect food for our “Little Food Pantry with a Big Heart.” Have a Happy New Year!. Amy George, who was ordained to the priesthood on December 11th. Thank you to Debbie McCanless, who has agreed to be a Pastoral Care team leader for 2017; to our continuing team leaders Julia McDonald, Lillian Trotter and Kim Weiss; and to our tireless Juan Fuentes, who is continuing as Pastoral Care’s Lay Coordinator. Welcome to Jean Cooper and Ben Evoldi and welcome back to Paula Barnes. All are joining Pastoral Care as team members in January. “Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.” Romans 12:13 Your Prayers are Requested Calvary’s Room in the Inn Needs Help Can we get a GSL Team to help? Are you interested in helping one Sunday a month? We have been asked if we can get a team of volunteers from GSL that may have an interest in staffing Room in the Inn one Sunday night a month at Calvary—three or four nights total since it only goes through March 26th. There are many ways to get involved, including setting up; greeting; bringing a main dish, a side dish, or dessert; sitting and enjoying a meal with our guests; staying overnight with our guests; bringing and/or organize toiletries; bringing/sending breakfast; and cleaning up on Monday mornings. Christine Todd, the Community Ministries Coordinator at Calvary, shared her experience: “Our EfM group worked it together one night and really enjoyed it. We had 15 guests, 4 women and 11 men. The food was delicious. I know our un-sheltered guests appreciated a warm bed, but I think we parishioners loved it, too.” Please think about helping this ministry and help our brothers and sisters who are less fortunate. The Prayers of the People are read from the lectern during most worship services, and every week those who have requested that their names be included in the Prayers of the People are listed in the very back of the service leaflet. Please take this list home with you and use it throughout the week to continue praying both for those who have asked publicly for our prayers and for those parishioners whose needs are private. To submit a pastoral care request or to have your name added to the Prayers of the People, please complete the Pastoral Care Requests form, located on the GSL website: www.gracestlukes.org/prayerrequest. Requests submitted through this form will be emailed directly to the appropriate lay staff and/ or clergy. Alternately, you may call the church office or email the Rev.
