IHM FASHION SHOW

On Saturday November 22, 2014
This year, the IHM school fashion show was very successful. There were 14 segments, including of
course, our 8th graders and their parents. Some segments were Main Street USA, The 7 Dwarfs,
Hey Mickey, Be our Guest (teachers), and so much more!
After the fashion show, some parents were serving pizza for the 5th graders’ Outdoor Ed fundraiser.
They also had a food truck come on Friday night. They had a boutique that lasted Friday- Sunday.
During the fashion show, the 9th graders that used to be in our school served lunch and desert to
the adults and kids. The entrées were chicken and pasta. The desert was cheesecake.
Some of the songs were, “Hey Mickey”, ”Happy”, and “Be our Guest”. If you saw the amazing
background on the stage, it was made by Mr. Shypertt. The theme this year was Disney.
This year’s fashion show was the best ever. If you want to see the real show, get the DVD on

IHM Out and About
FIELD TRIP TO FILOLI GARDENS
(4th Grade)
Fourth grade went on a field trip to Filoli Gardens
on 11/12/14. We went on a hike all around the
grounds. The first interesting thing that we saw was
a tree with a hole. We looked inside the hole and we
saw lots of stored acorns and leaves. Our docent, Janice said, “The food in that hole belongs to a squirrel.”
After that, we followed the trail until we saw some
scat on the grass. I asked Janice what kind it was. She
said the scat was from a deer. Next, we saw an oak
tree. I looked around to see if there were any more
acorns. I did see one acorn but it was all dried up,
probably from the drought.
After, we continued to follow the trail upward. I spotted WATER! Then I thought I saw something moving.
It was slimy and shiny. Janice picked it up. She said
the creature was a newt. She also said it was poisonous.
All of the groups saw different amazing things, but
this is what my group saw on our field trip to Filoli
gardens with 4th grade.

FILOLI GARDENS
The fourth grade had a field trip on November 12th. They went to the Filoli gardens. They
learned about Ohlone Indians and how they
lived. They also learned about different types
of animals and saw deer bones. Lastly they
learned about certain types of trees and plants.
These are some things the 4th graders did on
the field trip.
ELKUS RANCH
The 1st and 2nd graders went on a field trip to
Elkus Ranch on November 24th. They felt how
soft sheep’s wool is. They fed animals such as
chickens, sheep and goats. They saw llamas and
they even saw some of them spit. They had a
blast at Elkus Ranch!

IHM Out and About
Nutcracker

Fourth grade and kindergarten buddied up to see The Nutcracker at Fox Theater. The Nutcracker was a good experience because the kids in the show were of all different ages.
In addition to classic ballet, they did cool acrobatics in the
show. Students especially enjoyed the battle scene where the
Mouse King fought the Nutcracker Prince!

Mockingjay
Part One
Mockingjay Part One is the first part of
the long awaited conclusion to the Hunger
Games saga. Katniss Everdeen is scarred from
her experiences in the Hunger Games. Her
true love and fellow tribute, Peeta Mellark, is
being held captive by the Capitol while Katniss waits for a miracle in the believed to be
destroyed District 13. President Coin, ruler
of District 13, wants Katniss to be the Mockingjay and the leader of the rebellion against
the Capitol. Katniss doesn’t know what to
do, for her actions might affect Peeta…

Night at the Museum 3:
Secret of the Tomb By: Felicity Desuasido & Lexi Coral
If you’re going to the movies, Night at
the Museum 3: Secret of the Tomb is the
movie to see! It has lots of action and will
make you laugh. A museum guard, Larry
Daley, notices that things are going wrong
at the museum, and figures out that it’s all
because of a golden tablet that was created long ago. A green rust starts to form
on the tablet. Larry doesn’t know how to
stop it and things start to get worse. Before
you know it the museum statues are turning back to wax! Can Larry stop this before
it’s too late?

The Hobbit
The Battle of Five Armies
By Aidan Lynd & Angelo DeMartini
“The Hobbit the battle of Five Armies” is the 3rd Hobbit movie, based on
the great novel “The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.” If you like action, adventure,
or excitement in movies you will definitely love this movie. To make this movie
even more exciting, watch it in 3D or IMAX 3D. The movie started when Smaug
(the dragon) invaded Lake Town. Then the lake men had nowhere to stay so the
looked to Thorin for shelter and food. Then the Orcs of Moria tried to take over
Erebor. Then the elves of mirkwood come to reclaim there promised treasure.
Then over at Dol Guldor, Gandalf is captured. Lady Galadriel saves Gandalf and
sends Sauron away with the help of Elrond and Sauruman the white. The battle
has five armies. The armies are the elves, the men, the dwarves, the orcs, and
the goblins. It is a battle with two sides, one side is the Dwarves, elves, and the
men, and the other side is the orcs and goblins. The armies’ fight on the sweps of
Erebor, they fight and much blood is spilled. In the end the good side wins, but
the enemy Sauron is not yet defeated. The sad part is that Thorin, son of Thrain,
son of Thror dies; he is the head of the last 13 dwarves of the race of Durin.
In the end he is buried under the lonely mountain with his sword, Orcorist, the
goblin cleaver.

You can get the WWE 2k15 video game for the
PS4, PS3, Xbox360, and Xbox One for $50. The
game includes a new mode so you can play in “my
career”, which lets you play as your favorite wrestlers
against other wrestlers. The new characters are Rusev,
Bray Wyatt, Batista, Chris Jericho, Eric Rowan, Jack
Swagger, the Usos, Goldust and Stardust, and Luke
Harper. Some characters are downloadable content,
which means you need to pay for them. Unlike the last
game, there are more tag teams other than the shield
Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. WWE 2k15 also has
a hulkamania edition, which is for only the PS4. The
hulkamania edition is honoring Hulk Hogan is also sold
out of stock.

you’ll be playing against. You also have the choice

enough, you can even customize your character!
NBA2K15 is the right game for almost anyone!

Apple has a new way to pay with your iPhone
6. With your fingerprint, you put your phone
to the cashier and the amount you need to pay
will be paid. To set it up, you just need to go to
settings. You can only use this with the iPhone
6. Also, you have to put in your credit card
information, but then it will be saved.

Golden State Warriors
2015 SUPER BOWL
The warriors have been on a major hot streak
this season, like, RED hot! They’re 15-2 on the
season. Now, I might be a little out of date, but
last game, although playing horribly, they won
thanks to Stephen Curry with a clutch three to
put them up by 1! Usually they earn their wins
by luck. I’ve seen them beat the most incredible teams before such as the Houston Rockets,
Chicago Bulls and even the Miami Heat. On a
radio show, they were even referred to as the
best team in the league! The only thing I dislike
about the Warriors’ history is that they haven’t
won a championship in 39 years. They swept
(which means winning all 4 games without letting the other team win a game) the Washington Bullets in 1975. But I think that will change
this year. We’ll just have to see!
The 2015 NFL Super Bowl was a very exiting,
nail-biting game. The matchup was the New England Patriots vs. the Seattle Seahawks. At the
beginning the Seattle Seahawks won the coin
toss. It was a close game, but then football history was made: Russel Wilson through a horrible throw to a Seahawk receiver, but luckily (if
you’re a Seahawks fan) the ball bounced of the
Patriots defenders chest and the receiver barely
caught it. That put them about 5-10 yards from
the end zone and gave them a touchdown. The
final score ended up 28-24 Patriots and most
people including us were happy with that outcome.

Nasal Cell Transplant Enables
Paralyzed Man To Walk Again
Largest Light Display

Fireman Darek Fidyka was paralyzed from the
waist down in 2010, but thanks to a wonderful technique, the 38-year-old Bulgarian was able
to walk again! Geoffrey Raisman, a professor at
London’s Institute of Neurology and University
College, has been trying to create a way for the
spinal cord to repair itself for forty years! He discovered that olfactory ensheathing nerve cells are
constantly regenerating. This was very exciting to
him. What was even more exciting was that in experiments on rats and dogs, the OECs (olfactory
ensheathing nerve cells) were able to reconnect
the animals’ damaged or hurt nerves in their nervous system, enabling them to walk or run again!
When they tested it out on Fidyka, it did not do
anything at first. After two years, Fidyka’s spine
showed good signs of recovery. How awesome is
it that there is a way to heal the nervous system
through nasal cells?!
Have you ever heard of the “Crazy Light
Man”? If not, I’ll tell you about him. He
won a Guinness World record for displaying 33,1038 lights in one night! I think that
that’s pretty cool! He impressed the officials
of Canberra so much so that they want him
to use his lighting skills to establish the Petrie
Plaza. They were not disappointed. He lit up
the place with 1.2 million lights total! Creating something that creative must not have
been easy!
Why Thai Officials Fear Hunger Games Salute

Thai officials fear the Hunger Games salute because citizens are now doing this as a
sign of defiance. People will raise their three middle fingers as Katniss and Peeta do
to signify that they are not controlled by the power-hungry Capitol and President
Snow. Five young Thai citizens have been arrested for this symbol of protest. They
were released a few hours after they signed an agreement stating that they would
not be a part of any future political protests. It is surprising that a popular movie
symbol can cause such protest and defiance.

School Projects
5th grade New Years mobile
The 5th grade made New Years mobiles and made
promises for the New Year. They promised to stop doing
whatever they chose to give up, promised two academic
goals, made three personal goals as well as a wish and recalled two favorite memories from 2014. They can’t wait
to get the New Year started off right and jumping into the
last half of 5th grade where they will be getting ready for
middle school with lots of projects including the Science
Fair and learning about the United States.
