This academic institute of higher education is already stepped into the Golden Jubilee year. During this glorious year, I may expect get-together of all well-wishers, far and near, - their good wishes and helping hands. The faculty members of the College have been striving to conquer the souls of this class, paving a way for them to soar upwards in Higher Education. Indeed they come out with flying colours in the Final University Exams and in various Cultural and Sports’ Meets. The students, who throng here and get admitted as Students of First Year Degree Course would prove no exception. I strongly cherish the desire that the present Students would definitely add feathers in the cap of this Institute, having a long history of academic, sports and cultural excellence. Dr. Bappaditya Mandal Teacher-in-Charge Sonamukhi College 2 LOCATION Sonamukhi College is 1 km away from the centre of century old Sonamukhi Munipality. This College Campus always witnesses all the vehicles moving over the bus route of Durgapur -Bishnupur. Soanmukhi forest range in the east provides nature’s care without any interruption. Dept. of Irrigation, Block Development Office, Dept. of Forest, Land and Land Reform Department, Athena B. Ed. College, Athena D. Ed. College, Athena School, Cold Storage & Sat-Sanga Ashram are converged on this sacred point of our earth. HISTORY The glorious year was 1966. Assembly of some noble spirits was the result of enormous inspiration from Prof Ananta Lal Patra. At least three supports were necessary for a 3-dimensional creation. Late Bishnupada Dey and Late Saktipada Dey extended their support unconditionally by donating a land of area around 5 acres in the nature’s lap of Sonamukhi forest. A large number of people poured their financial help with smile, happiness and blessings keeping aside their concern about their economic status. The inception of Sonamukhi College and cultivation of Higher Education turned into reality by their collective effort. Sonamukhi Block and its surroundings were highly populated with first generation learner. Poverty, Darkness and superstitions were the part of their daily life. Voyage to enlighten those innocent souls was started from three rooms of Sonamukhi B. J. High School. The incessant and incredible effort finally showed the completeness on 17 August 1966. On that very day, Sonamukhi College got approval of UGC under section 12(b) and 2f. Prof Ananta Lal Patra, founder principal, is no more. This irony prevails in each and every heart of citizens belongs to Bankura District. But, the germination of this higher education centre already has become the landmark of Academic Excellency in the eastern region of Bankura District. Handful number of students started their higher education in the light of Arts and Commerce Stream. Encouragement of the then upcoming students by Prof Patra and his associates forced to open a separate shift. It is presently known as Morning shift. The decade of seventy ended with a new ornament of Science stream. Beginning of 21st century enriched this college with a number of Honours Subjects in Science. This college has become a Banyan like tree from a sprout with the movement of largest hand of clock. The college has now become one of the premier institutions in the field of general education in science, arts and commerce under the University of Burdwan and has earned good reputation for its Academic Excellency, congenial environment and an exquisite eco-friendly geographical situation. 3 AN OVERVIEW OF THE COLLEGE The Sonamukhi College, established in the year 1966, is one of the premier institutions in the field of higher education in Science, Arts and Commerce under the University of Burdwan, West Bengal. This college has earned good reputation for its academic excellency, cultural acumen and sports-spirit. Here the students have the scope to exchange their views with teachers in eco-friendly atmosphere, far from the madding crowd. Here there is no hindrance to join in cultural contests, sports and in various discourses and debates. The college is well-connected by bus and train services from Bankura, Burdwan, Bishnupur and Durgapur. The students can avail themselves of the train service of BankuraMosagram (S.E. Rly.) Railway and can reach this college easily. VISION Oppressed by the heavy and weary weight of the time, the mind of the youth always aspires to reach something afar from the sphere of our sorrow. It is the vision of the college to lead the mind of the youth to some untrodden region of the world-to uncover the world of wonder and mystery that lies on every sharp bend of learning. It is the vision of the college to make every student a Prometheus who would remain unbound to encounter all darkness on the way to lightthe light of higher education. The vision of this Institute is to go beyond the physical reality-the mere world of existence to reach the inner reality or rather the conscious reality which discovers the inner meaning of things. It is the aspiration to grasp the mysteries of existence, discovering scientific truths or philosophical understanding of this wonderful world. Here teachers do not teach or students are not taught. They rather join hands in exploring the world of science, literature, philosophy and many other spheres of knowledge until their minds get enlightened and souls illuminated. MISSION With the very inception of this College, Swami Vivekananda’s ideals of education have been cherished and hence ‘Man-making’ is the mission of this College. It is the mission of developing human resource, an all-round development of body, mind and soul of the students, coming of socially and economically backward community. It is the mission of this College to enlighten the souls of the students with real higher education so that they may help to bring about the brave new India of tomorrow and perfection of humanity in the true sense. OBJECTIVE It is the objective of the college to impart Three-year Under Graduate Honours and General Courses in three streams (Arts, Science and Commerce) to the students admitted through proper counselling and thus prepare them as really human resources with knowledge and skill so that they can keep pace with the modern society and enter into the vast arena of higher education – the post graduation course in the university as well. The class-room education and the fieldstudies with practical knowledge on the subjects are in perfect consonance with the requirements of the larger life. The UG courses and curricula, designed by the university and modularised by the faculty members of the college help much to inculcate the values of life, to inspire a creative urge among the students and inevitably the emergence of a knowledge-based society. 4 AFFILIATION OF COURSES (B.U.)
