FDI in brief

UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE ON TRADE AND DEVELOPMENT
FDI in brief:* Mauritius
FDI flows to Mauritius on a downward trend since 2000
*Complete tables are presented in the Country Profile: Mauritius World Investment Directory online, Africa
FDI flows to Mauritius in 2002 declined by 12%, while outflows remained quite insignificant (figure 1). The downturn was a return to
normal FDI flows in the country after an exceptional surge that ocurred in 2000.
Inward FDI stock grew by 4%, from $718 million in 2001 to $746 million in 2002 (figure 2).
At the end of 2002, no region or group of countries dominated in the FDI flows to Mauritius. Similar pattern is reflected in the
distribution of the FDI outflows between 1994 and 2002 (figures 3 and 4).
There were no dominant industries in which FDI flows are concentrated in both the FDI inflows and outflows at the end of 2002
(figures 5 and 6).
FDI inflows as a percentage of gross fixed capital formation declined from 3.2% in 2001 to 2.7% in 2002 (figure 7).
Inward FDI stock as a percentage of the gross domestic product (GDP) stabilized at around 15% between the period 2000 and 2002,
from about 9% in 1999. Outward FDI stock as a percentage of GDP was also fairly stable between 1998 - 2002 (figure 8).
The three largest foreign TNCs affiliates in Mauritius in the industrial sector, in 2002, were all in textile production. Two of these
TNCs were from Hong Kong, China, and the other was from the United Kingdom (table 1).
