Erosion Notes

Erosion Notes
Erosion
• The process by which natural forces move
weathered rock and soil from one place to
another
• Examples: Water (rivers), glaciers, wind,
waves
Difference between Erosion and Weathering
•Weathering breaks down rock
into sediment, erosion moves
it from one place to another
Sediment
•Material being moved
Deposition
•Occurs where the ages of erosion
lay down sediment
•Shapes the land
Mass Movement
•Process that move sediment
downhill caused by gravity
•Examples: Landslides, mudflows,
slump, creep
Landslides
•When rock and soil slide quickly
down a steep slope
Landslides
Mudflows
•Rapid downhill movement of a
mixture of water, rock, and soil
•Can be triggered by volcanic or
seismic activities
Mudflow
Slump
•Mass of rock and soil
suddenly slide downhill
Slump
Creep
•Very slow movement of material
downhill hat is associated with
heating and cooling, freezing and
thawing, wetting and drying
Creep
