( Adapted from an on-line article at http://www.dfat.gov.au/facts ) ‘Advance Australia Fair’ the national anthem of Australia is a revised version of a late nineteenth century patriotic song, it was officially declared the national anthem on 19 April 1984. The composer, Peter Dodds McCormick, a Scot, composed ‘Advance Australia Fair’ under the pen-name ‘Amicus’ (amicus is the Latin word for ‘friend’). It was first performed in Sydney on Saint Andrew’s Day, 1878. An amended version was also sung by a choir of 10,000 at the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January, 1901. In 1907, the Australian Government awarded McCormick £100 for his composition. Peter McCormick died in 1916 and ‘Advance Australia Fair’ became free of copyright in 1966. The Commonwealth of Australia, however, does copyright the officially proclaimed lyrics and particular arrangements of music. Non-commercial public use of the anthem is permitted, but commercial use requires permission. The second, fourth & fifth verse have been omitted & some of the original words of the song have been Page 2 Q.R.S.C.OOP S.C.OOP VOLUME 1, ISSUE 4 Page 3 changed for the official version. In the third verse of the original song, two lines were changed ‘To make our youthful Commonwealth’ became ‘To make this Commonwealth of ours’, and ‘For loyal sons beyond the seas’ became ‘For those who’ve come across the seas’. From 1788 to 1974 the official anthem was ‘God Save the Queen’ (or ‘King’), although numerous commercial and official competitions were held over the years to find a substitute. The first was held in 1840. John Dunmore Lang, who published an ‘Australian Anthem’ and an ‘Australian Hymn’ in 1826, was an early advocate of a distinctively Australian anthem. ‘The Song of Australia’ was written in 1859 by Caroline Carleton, and it was suggested to the Prime Minister in 1929 as a possible national anthem. ORIGINAL VERSION Australians all let us rejoice, For we are young and free; We've golden soil and wealth for toil, Our home is girt by sea; Our land abounds in Nature's gifts Of beauty rich and rare; In history's page, let every stage Advance Australia fair! In joyful strains then let us sing, "Advance Australia fair!" When gallant Cook from Albion sail'd, To trace wide oceans o'er, True British courage bore him on, Till he landed on our shore. Then here he raised Old England's flag, The standard of the brave; With all her faults we love her still, "Brittannia rules the wave!" In joyful strains then let us sing "Advance Australia fair!" The issue of a truly national anthem was raised persistently before the 1956 Olympic Games, which were held in Melbourne. ‘Advance Australia Fair’ and ‘Waltzing Matilda’ were the two songs most strongly favoured then as the new anthem. ‘Waltzing Matilda’ was composed in 1895, with lyrics by one of Australia’s best known poets, AB ‘Banjo’ Paterson. On Australia Day, 26 January, in 1972, the number of entries (more than 400) received in an Australia-wide national anthem quest gave an indication of the interest in a new anthem. Exactly a year later a government-sponsored competition was announced, which drew 2500 entries for the words and 1300 for the music. The judges selected six entries for the words, but rejected all the musical entries. In 1974 a public opinion poll sampled an estimated 60,000 people to select from three possible anthems: ‘Advance Australia Fair’, ‘Waltzing Matilda’ and ‘Song of Australia’. ‘Advance Australia Fair’ polled 51.4 per cent. Following this result the then Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam, announced that ‘Advance Australia Fair’ would be the national anthem, except on specifically Royal occasions, when both it and ‘God Save the Queen’ would be played. In 1976, after a change of government, ‘God Save the Queen’ was reinstated for Beneath our radiant southern Cross, Royal, vice-regal, defence and loyal toast occasions, with ‘Advance We'll toil with hearts and hands; To make our youthfull Commonwealth Australia Fair’ to be played on all other official occasions. In May 1977, however, a national poll was conducted to ascertain the public Renowned of all the lands; For loyal sons beyond the seas’ choice of a national song. This time more than seven million people We've boundless plains to share; were issued with ballot papers. With courage let us all combine The results were: OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM To advance Australia fair. ‘Advance Australia Fair’ 43.2% , Australians all let us rejoice, In joyful strains then let us sing For we are young and free; ‘Waltzing Matilda’ 28.3%, "Advance Australia fair!" ‘God Save the Queen’ 18.7% We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil; While other nations of the globe and ‘Song of Australia’ 9.6%. Our home is girt by sea; Behold us from afar, Despite the poll results, adoption Our land abounds in nature’s gifts We'll rise to high renown and shine of the new national anthem met Of beauty rich and rare; Like our glorious southern star; widespread opposition. It was not In history’s page, let every stage From England, Scotia, Erin's Isle, until April 1984 that the Advance Australia Fair. Who come our lot to share, Governor-General issued a Let all combine with heart and hand In joyful strains then let us sing, proclamation that ‘God Save the To advance Australia fair! Queen’ was designated the Royal Advance Australia Fair. In joyful strains then let us sing Anthem, to be played at public Beneath our radiant Southern Cross "Advance Australia fair!" We’ll toil with hearts and hands; engagements in Australia attended by the members of the To make this Commonwealth of ours Shou'd foreign foe e'er sight our coast, Or dare a foot to land, Royal family. ‘Advance Renowned of all the lands; We'll rouse to arms like sires of yore Australia Fair’ was finally For those who’ve come across the seas To guard our native strand; declared to be the We’ve boundless plains to share; Brittannia then shall surely know, Australian national With courage let us all combine Beyond wide ocean's roll, To Advance Australia Fair. Her sons in fair Australia's land anthem. Still keep a British soul. In joyful strains then let us sing, In joyful strains then let us sing Advance Australia Fair. "Advance Australia fair!" The Mindarie & Districts Sea Sports Club Wet Stories GO WEST YOUNG MAN …. Mindarie & Districts Sea Sports Members showed their pioneering spirit recently while competing in the Club’s first competition for 2012. None more so than Cameron Johnston who headed 50 miles off shore, out the back off Rottnest, to the “Fads” ( Fish Attracting Devices ) – a popular fishing area that successfully attracts a variety of large pelagic fish. Cameron left Mindarie at 4:00am and returned with a club record Mahi Mahi commonly known as a Dolphin fish- see photo below. John and Sharon Barnes also ventured to Rottnest in search of pelagic with Sharon bagging a good size Samson Fish. George Bartell traveled to the back of direction bank and scooped the pool with a 10Kg plus dhufish, large Baldchin Groper, a beautiful pink snapper and other smaller species. Other good fish caught included a Harlequin, some good sized King George Whiting, Herring and Gardies. Derek Smith traveled out 22 miles to his “secret” spot and on arrival found fellow club member Nick Shaw (dressed in disguise) fishing over his spot. The Pirate travelled out to “The Cave” but returned with little to show for his efforts. The weigh-in at the club was again lots of fun with Pete the Pirate compering in his own inimitable style, with background sea shanty music, free hot dogs and a record number of competitors, it all augers well for the remainder of 2012 with the next boat competition being held on 5 February. The shore fisher people have not been forgotten, with the club holding a Shore Fishing and Aloha BBQ Day on 29 January. There will be prizes for the biggest herring, whiting and taylor, with the weigh-in at 4:00pm following with gourmet Hawaiian Burgers. Fun for all, so come and join in. 5 8 1 7 3 9 4 6 1 7 9 4 8 9 4 1 5 3 2 8 3 7 9 4 S u d o k u P u z z l e Sudoku (数独 sūdoku?, English pronunciation: /suːˈdoʊkuː/ soo-doh-koo) is a logic-based, combinatorial numberplacement puzzle. The objective is to fill a 9×9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 sub-grids that compose the grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9. The puzzle setter provides a partially completed grid, which typically has a unique solution. Completed puzzles are always a type of Latin square with an additional constraint on the contents of individual regions. For example, the same single integer may not appear twice in the same 9×9 playing board row or column or in any of the nine 3×3 subregions of the 9×9 playing board. The puzzle was popularized in 1986 by the Japanese puzzle company Nikoli, under the name Sudoku, meaning single number. It became an international hit in 2005. HISTORY……………… Number puzzles appeared in newspapers in the late 19th century, when French puzzle setters began experimenting with removing numbers from magic squares. According to Will Shortz, the modern Sudoku was most likely designed anonymously by Howard Garns, a 74-year-old retired architect and freelance puzzle constructor from Indiana, and first published in 1979 by Dell Magazines as Number Place. Garns's name was always present on the list of contributors in issues of Dell Pencil Puzzles and Word Games that included Number Place, and was always absent from issues that did not. He died in 1989 before getting a chance to see his creation as a worldwide phenomenon. It is unclear if Garns was familiar with any of the French examples. The puzzle was introduced in Japan by Nikoli in the paper Monthly Nikolist in April 1984 as Sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru which can be translated as "the digits must be single" or "the digits are limited to one occurrence." (In Japanese,"dokushin" means an "unmarried person".) At a later date, the name was abbreviated to Sudoku by Maki Kaji taking only the first kanji of compound words to form a shorter version. In 1986, Nikoli introduced two innovations: the number of givens was restricted to no more than 32, and puzzles became "symmetrical" (meaning the givens were distributed in rotationally symmetric cells). It is now published in mainstream Japanese periodicals. A tabletop version of Sudoku can be played with a standard 81-card Set deck. A three-dimensional Sudoku puzzle was invented by Dion Church and published in the Daily Telegraph in May 2005. The Times also publishes a three-dimensional version under the name Tredoku. There is a Sudoku version of the Rubik's Cube named Sudoku Cube. There are many other variants. Some are different shapes in the arrangement of overlapping 9×9 grids, such as butterfly, windmill, or flower. Others vary the logic for solving the grid. Another variant on the logic of solution is Clueless Sudoku, in which nine 9×9 Sudoku grids are themselves placed in a three-by-three array. The center cell in each 3×3 grid of all nine puzzles is left blank and form a tenth Sudoku puzzle without any cell completed; hence, "clueless". In 1997, New Zealander and retired Hong Kong judge Wayne Gould, then in his early 50s, saw a partly completed puzzle in a Japanese bookshop. Over six years he developed a computer program to produce puzzles quickly. Knowing that British newspapers have a long history of publishing crosswords and other puzzles, he promoted Sudoku to The Times in Britain, which launched it on 12 November 2004 (calling it Su Doku). The first letter to The Times regarding Su Doku was published the following day on 13 November from Ian Payn of Brentford, complaining that the puzzle had caused him to miss his stop on the tube. The rapid rise of Sudoku in Britain from relative obscurity to a front-page feature in national newspapers attracted commentary in the media and parody (such as when The Guardian's G2 section advertised itself as the first newspaper supplement with a Sudoku grid on every page). Recognizing the different psychological appeals of easy and difficult puzzles, The Times introduced both side by side on 20 June 2005. From July 2005, Channel 4 included a daily Sudoku game in their Teletext service. On 2 August, the BBC's programme guide Radio Times featured a weekly Super Sudoku which features a 16×16 grid. In the United States, the first newspaper to publish a Sudoku puzzle by Wayne Gould was The Conway Daily Sun (New Hampshire), in 2004. SUDOKU HISTORY ( Cont. )……………… The world's first live TV Sudoku show, Sudoku Live, was a puzzle contest first broadcast on 1st July 2005 on Sky One. It was presented by Carol Vorderman. Nine teams of nine players (with one celebrity in each team) representing geographical regions competed to solve a puzzle. Each player had a hand-held device for entering numbers corresponding to answers for four cells. Phil Kollin of Winchelsea, England was the series grand prize winner taking home over £23,000 over a series of games. The audience at home was in a separate interactive competition, which was won by Hannah Withey of Cheshire. Later in 2005, the BBC launched SUDO-Q, a game show that combines Sudoku with general knowledge. However, it uses only 4×4 and 6×6 puzzles. Four seasons were produced, before the show ended in 2007. In 2006, a Sudoku website published songwriter Peter Levy's Sudoku tribute song, but quickly had to take down the mp3 due to heavy traffic, the song is to feature in a British-made Sudoku documentary. The Japanese Embassy also nominated the song for an award, with Levy doing talks with Sony in Japan to release the song as a single. Sudoku software is very popular on PCs, websites, and mobile phones. Software has also been released on video game consoles, such as the Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable, the Game Boy Advance, Xbox Live Arcade, the Nook e-book reader, several iPod models, and the iPhone. In fact, just two weeks after Apple Inc. debuted the online App Store within its iTunes store on July 11, 2008, there were already nearly 30 different Sudoku games, created by various software developers, specifically for the iPhone and iPod Touch. One of the most popular video games featuring Sudoku is Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day!. Critically and commercially well received, it generated particular praise for its Sudoku implementation and sold more than 8 million copies worldwide. Due to its popularity, Nintendo made a second Brain Age game titled Brain Age2, which has over 100 new Sudoku puzzles and other activities. In June 2008 an Australian drugs-related jury trial costing over A$1,000,000 was aborted when it was discovered that five of the twelve jurors had been playing Sudoku instead of listening to evidence.
