bands, one nickel, five pins, one tin can, one piece of chalk, one small plastic cup,
two bits of wood, two sewing needles, 2 balloons, string, piece of wool cloth,
rubber comb or rod, an adult with a car, (optional- iron fillings or paperclips, iron
nail, a bar magnet)
Unit 6: a plastic bowl large enough to hold 3 or 4 cups of water, 2 or 3 ice cubes (these
must be cubes or chunks of ice for floating), 4 plastic glasses (1 for each test
material), 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of sand, 1 teaspoon
of salad or cooking oil, a plastic spoon or wooden stick for stirring
Unit 7: sheet of black paper, window, sunlight shining through the window, drinking glass full
of water, piece of cardboard large enough to cover the glass, sink or large basin to
catch the water after the experiment
Unit 8: flashlight, rubber ball (about 6 inches in diameter), large white sheet of paper
Unit 9: a drinking glass, some ice cubes, some flavored beverage, a clean cloth or tissue, a
ball (3 to 5 inches), a light source, a disk (3 to 5 inches)

To help strengthen student literacy skills, students are encouraged to read books in
addition to school assignments. A list of approved books has been prepared that
provides age appropriate reading levels. Students must use books from this list for
required book reports.
Most of the approved titles are available from your local library. Although every effort
has been made to separate books according to age-appropriateness, we realize that
tastes differ and not every book on these lists may be appropriate for your family. For
this reason, we encourage parents to choose books and read and discuss these books
with their child.
