Synopsis:
Scout, a young girl in a quiet southern town, is about to experience dramatic events that
will affect the rest of her life. She and brother, Jem, are being raised by their widower father, Atticus,
and by their strong-minded
minded housekeeper named Calpurnia. Wid
Wide-eyed
eyed Scout is fascinated with the
sensitively revealed people of her small town but, from the start, there's a rumble of thunder just under
the calm surface of the life here. Set in 1935, this play illustrates the social issues of this time period as
the black people of the community have a special feeling about Scout's father. In her youthful
innocence, she does not know why. A few of her white friends are inexplicably hostile and Scout doesn't
understand this either. Unpleasant things are shouted and th
the
e bewildered girl turns to her father.
Atticus, a lawyer, explains that he is defending a young negro wrongfully accused of a grave crime. Since
this is causing such an upset, Scout wants to know why he is doing it. "Because if I didn't," her father
replies,
s, "I couldn't hold my head up." When she asks why Atticus would take on such a hopeless fight, he
replies, "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason not to try." He
goes on to prepare Scout for the trouble to come. "We'
"We're
re fighting our friends. But remember this—no
this
matter how bitter things get, they're still our friends." Things do get bitter, leading up to drastic
measures as Atticus props himself in a chair against the cell door of the man he's defending to confront
an angry mob. Horrified, Scout projects herself into this confrontation and her inconvenient presence
helps bring back a little sanity. Atticus fights his legal battle with a result that is part defeat, part
triumph. As Atticus comes out of the courthouse, th
the
e deeply moved town minister tells Scout, "Stand
up. Your father's passing!" This dramatization of the touching classic tale is a meaningful work of art.

Scout — Girl to play 8-9 years old. LEAD ROLE. Scout is the protagonist of
the play. She is bold, precocious, courageous and forthright. If a hard
question needs to be asked, she’ll ask it.
Jean Louise — Female narrator age 35-45. LEAD ROLE. She is Scout all
grown up who looks back upon the events with a touching perspective. She
is asking questions as she lives through the dramatic time of her youth.
Jem — Boy to play Scout’s older brother (age 11-13). Jem is always
looking to communicate and find understanding from his father.
Atticus — Male, age 45-50. LEAD ROLE. He is the tall, quietly
impressive, reserved and civilized hero of the play. He is a country lawyer
in his hometown of Maycomb, Ala. and his integrity and strength is beyond
reproach. He is a pillar of goodness and honor.
Calpurnia — Female, African-American to play 40-60. She is black, proud
and capable. She’s a self-educated woman who has raised the motherless
Scout and Jem since they were toddlers. Her standards are high and her
discipline is uncompromising.
Dill — Boy to play Scout and Jem’s friend (age 11-13). He is wise beyond
his years and is about the same age as Jem. He is neater and more
sophisticated than his friends. Yet, he is unhappy in his own life and
senses an air of strong family bonds in the Finches.
Maudie Atkinson — Female, age 30-40. She is younger than Atticus and
a lovely, sensitive woman. She is good and wise with great compassion
especially as it pertains to the children.
Walter Cunningham — Male, age 45-60. He is a hard-up farmer who

AUDITIONS FOR HUNTINGTON BEACH PLAYHOUSE
Reverend Sykes — Male, African-American to play age 40+. Rev. Sykes
is the black minister of the First Purchase Church. He’s an imposing man
with a strong stage presence both in stature and voice.
Heck Tate — Male, age 40+. Heck is the town sheriff and a complex
man. He does his duty as he sees it and enforces the law without favor.
Stephanie Crawford — Female, age 45-60. She’s the town gossip.
She’s loud and brash and petty. She just likes to stir things up.
Nathan Radley — Male, Age 30+. He is a thin, leathery and laconic man
not given to too much conversation, if at all. (This role can also be
‘doubled’ with that of Boo Radley).
Boo Radley — Male, age30+. Boo ‘Arthur’ Radley is the town ‘mystery’,
a pale recluse who is fearsome in reputation only. He hasn’t been seen
outside his house in 15 years. In the end, he performs an extraordinary act
of heroism in the play before returning to his sanctuary. Virtually a nonspeaking role.
Mrs. Dubose — Female, age 60+. She is old, bitter and angry. She walks
with great pain. She’s fighting a secret battle within herself and her
existence has in it a point of importance for Jem and Scout.
Tom Robinson — Male, African-American, age 25-40. Tom is black,
handsome and vital, but with a left hand crippled by a childhood accident.
He is prosecuted for the rape and assault of Mayella Ewell and is defended
by Atticus in the penultimate trial scene.
Helen Robinson — Female, African-American, age 20-40. Helen is
Tom’s wife and mother to their children. She is numb with shock at the
false charge against her husband. She’s caught in a terrible nightmare.
4
AUDITIONS FOR HUNTINGTON BEACH PLAYHOUSE
Judge Taylor — Male, aged 50+. The judge is a wintry man of the South.
He tries to run his court as best he can in this time to see that justice is
done. While he tries to run his court impartially, his sympathy lies with Tom
and Atticus.
Mr. Gilmer — Male, age 30-40. He is the public prosecutor who is out to
convict Tom. His manner is arrogant, cruel and hurtful. Yet he, too, has
unexpressed doubts about Tom’s guilt.
Mayella Ewell — Female, to play age 19. Mayella is the oldest daughter
to Bob Ewell. She is the rape ‘victim’ of the play. She’s poor, uneducated,
desperate, lonely and fearful. She plays the victim role to the hilt. She is
low-rent yet ‘alluring’ in a strange way.
Bob Ewell — Male, Age 40-50. Bob is a little, cocky man who lives with
his large family by the town dump. He is Mayella’s crass and disgusting
father. He’s equally bitter, angry and prejudiced beyond the pale. When
Atticus destroys his credibility, Bobs rage and frustration border on
paranoia as he seeks revenge.
