A friendly reminder
from Momentum’s
SAFETY TEAM!
Happy Spring from the Safety Team!
We are so looking forward to the warmer and
longer days that Spring and Summer bring!
With these days come some reminders on
staying safe. Please be sure to check yourself
for ticks after being outside. Ticks like to seek
out places such as your hairline on the back of
your neck and ears, under your armpits, and in
the groin area. You can also use bug spray,
wear long pants and long sleeve shirts as well
as several products to spray on your clothing.
Animals bring many ticks indoors so be sure to
protect them also. With such a wet Spring,
mosquitos are said to be in full force also. Keep
your eye to the sky and check the weather
before going outside for hikes or bike rides,
fishing, kayaking, etc. Thunder storms are
frequent this time of year. It is also a good idea
to check the expiration on your epi pen if you
use one and be sure to have it when going
outside.
Spring and Summer bring lots of fun. Enjoy
yourself but BE SAFE!

WELCOME to Momentum!
Red Claws Basketball Game
Winter Fun @ Sebago State Park
Sea Dogs Baseball Game
Finally, the long winter is over!
Our Special Olympics Athletes
have been busy this spring on
the court and in the pool with
basketball and aquatics,
culminating with Regionals,
State Games, and Unified
Tournaments. Our own Casco
and Hampden Basketball Teams
ended up in a nail-biting final
held at Bates College, Lewiston!
When cabin fever set in we took
a trip to the Portland Science
Museum for the amazing
Dinosaur Exhibit, had an
evening out playing bocce and
enjoyed supper with friends.
Now the snow has gone and we
can find the track, training for
Summer Games is under way…
but not to waste the last of the
snow and ice, the Fish Baiters
took a jump into the cold water
for the Special Olympics Ice
Plunge, others hiked up and
then skied down Tuckerman’s
Ravine and Shawnee Peak.
Another favorite fund raiser for
our athletes was the St Patrick’s
Day Boiled Dinner at Daddyo’s
in Oxford…thanks to everyone
for their contributions and
support. Other sport
enthusiasts have been able to
cheer on the Boston Celtics, the
Red Claws and enjoy opening
day at the Oxford Speedway.
Our property on Fish Hatchery
Way across from the Casco
office is bustling with activity as
we prepare for gardening and
looking after our new chickens!
Momentum got even safer with
three staff newly certified in
CPR/First Aide, well done!
Everyone is now looking
forward to a great and warm
summer!!!

Talent Show
Congratulations to all
Windham athletes who
competed in this year’s
Special O basketball and
swimming competitions! The
unified team went undeflated
at the April b-ball
tournament, and the
swimmers’ hard work and
backstrokes of luck earned
some golds and silvers. Our
March musical talent show
featured drumming,
strumming, rhymes, and good
times. At the Portland Science
Center we encountered nearly
every kind of dinosaur (except
the long-winded thesaurus).
We turned our eyes to the
skies and had a stellar time at
the Southworth Planetarium.
Participants learned to level
up their skills and Live It Up!
in their independent living
classes. We welcomed spring
at the WWE ring and hit the
trails at Grafton Notch to say
goodbye to the last of the
snow. Our Otto and Little
Caesars Pizza fundraisers for
Special O brought in more
than one kind of dough. The
Maine Wildlife Park has
welcomed us fur more
volunteering opportunities. A
big Thank You to Lou and
Mike at the Maine Primitive
Skills School for a great winter
workshop, Liz for sharing her
knowledge of t’ai-chi, Suzi for
visiting and answering our
LogistiCare questions, and all
our coaches and athletes for
another great season!

HAMPDEN NEWS…
Basketball season comes to a close!
Team Momentum North would like to thank the coaches and athletes for a
successful Basketball season! The team held practices twice a week for 5
months, which was shown in their performance on the courts! One of our
teams won both Northern and Southern Region tournaments for Special
Olympics. Both teams displayed true athleticism and sportsmanship! We could
not be more proud!
GO TEAM MOMENTUM NORTH!
Dallas Gerow has accepted
the position of Shared Living
Program Administrator in
the Hampden office. Dallas
previously worked as a PAA
in our Community Supports
program. We have received
very positive feedback from
the homes she supports.
Congratulations Dallas!
The Vikings are coming, the Vikings are coming!
It seems that the Viking have landed in Hampden as everywhere you look this
spring Viking themes are popping up! Shu has led his Viking themed cooking
group to discover the secretes behind Viking bread, as well as several Viking
stews. We have looked into the history and culture of Vikings and their
traditions so that we all may have a greater understanding what a Viking life
may bring. Mike G has assisted a group to construct a Viking themed video
game, yep, a video game. Jay has supported his groups in leather working to
create Viking themed crafts using the old ways. There is even a Viking play that
the crew has written and will be performing soon along with help from Fred
and Jamie the intern! It seems that Vikings are the new Zombies.
