Do Cell Phones Truly Affect
Cellular Function?

“Far more people in
India have access to a
mobile phone than to
a toilet.”

Previous Research

Many possible health outcomes



Mild local warmth
Cancer
Lower sperm count
INTERPHONE Study


↑ risk of glioma at the highest exposure
Otherwise no increased glioma or
meningioma risk due to mobile phone use

Long--Term Goal
Long

To determine if cell phones pose any
threat to reproduction
Objectives


Establish the field strength of the radiant
energy source associated with mobile
phone use
Determine if direct exposure of cultured
cells to these fields influenced cell
physiology

Questions?
At close range in vitro, cell phones appear to
influence cellular function
However, it is unclear if this translates to cells in
vivo, especially reproductive tissue which is
normally more distant
Future studies are warranted to determine the
possible influences cell phones might have on
reproduction
