Project Snowflake - On the Road to Recovery

Derry Members Honor
Sandy Hook Elementary School
Project Snowflake
Members of On the Road to Recovery in Derry caught wind that
the Connecticut PTA had put out a notice of a project for Sandy
Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT … “Project Snowflake.”
The thought from the PTA was that students and teachers across
the country could make and send snowflakes that the school could
use to decorate the halls for the students who would be returning
to school.

Members Welcome
Members of OTRTR’s Creative Arts Group made dozens of
snowflakes and sent them off to Sandy Hook.
The response far exceeded the PTA’s expectations. In an public
announcement given early January, Sandy Hook Elementary
received more than 6 million snowflakes of all shapes, sizes and
forms from schools, PTAs, community centers, and families around
the world … not to mention the caring Members of On the Road
to Recovery!

Do you have eyes but don’t see?
Do you have ears but don’t hear?
Do you have a voice but is it silent?
In this age of the internet, cable news, television and smart phone,
how is it possible that we remain so disconnected? Are we finding
ourselves separated from life all around us? Yes, all of this is true.
Why do I ask? I ask because if we want, we can isolate ourselves,
stay disconnected and wait in the shadows of darkness that too
frequently become to pathway to despair and incredible lowliness.
Have you ever wondered how it happens that a person can be alone even in a crowded city? All of
these things can happen if we choose to let them happen. There are times when we don’t choose
these things, but we do nothing and end up at the same place. Remember … not to make a
decision is really making a decision, a decision to let things happen. When all of the above happen
how do we react? Is it with quiet resignation that says, “That’s the way it is, it has always been this
way, and to look into the future we see no hope for change?” NO, it doesn’t have to be so!
The power and strength to change these things is found within ourselves. At the moment of our
arrival in this world we have been given gifts, the gift of life and the master tool to move ourselves
forward. It is called free will! No, we cannot simply “will” ourselves to wellness by declaring
ourselves well, however we can “will ourselves” to work on “our plan for wellness and recovery”
and then do it. As an old TV ad used to repeatedly tell us, “Try it, you will like it!”

The Values that Drive Peer Support
Values. There are ten of them that drive the work of Intentional Peer
Support. Over several months, we have talked about seven of these:
Commitment to Recovery; Accountability; the Power of Language;
Direct, Honest, and Respectful Communication; Critical Learning;
Worldview; Mutual Responsibility; and this month we’ll talk about ...
Shared Risk: Frankly, this value is hard to exercise. Why? Because it
involves having to sit with one’s discomfort. That’s a bit foreign to most of us. We live in a society that
works diligently to make things more “comfortable.” Think about it: Automobiles with heated seats
and dual climate controls; high-tech remotes that change channels, turn off lights, and turn on fans so we
don’t have to get up out of our “comfortable” seats to do those things; or what about the CVS type
store that has hundreds of linear feet of shelving filled with items to take away pain and make us more
“comfortable.” At our Peer Centers, we teach the high value of sitting with one’s discomfort. That’s
hard!
Exercising the value of shared risk often manifests itself in the ability to work through hard times
without professional intervention. That’s at the core of Intentional Peer Support! It also shows itself
through the avoidance of over-reacting and taking over situations when things get tough. So, to our
readers … may I encourage you to learn to sit with your discomfort. If you don’t know how, or even
what that looks like, come to one of our Peer Centers. We’ll gladly show you.

Creative Writing … More Expressions toward Wellness
There are many ways to write creatively. One way is through poetry, and not all poetry is the same.
Last month some of our members expressed their thoughts using the form of Pantoum Poetry. This
month our members were focused on Cinquain Poems … poems that are five lines long, with
certain “rules.”
Line 1 ……………………………………………………..
One Word (subject or noun)
Line 2 ……………………………………………………..
Two Words (adjectives that describe line 1)
Line 3 ……………………………………………………..
Three Words (action verbs that relate to line 1)
Line 4 ……………………………………………………..
Four Words (feelings or a complete sentence that relate to line 1)
Line 5 ………………………………………………………
One Word (synonym of line 1 or a words that sums it up)

February Outreach
Members of our Derry Peer Center are reaching out to the folks at the Pleasant Valley Nursing
Center in Derry on Valentines Day this month. Members have been working on making
Valentines cards for EVERY resident at the Nursing Center. And thanks to the donations from
the four local businesses listed below, every resident of the Nursing Center will also get a
flower! We firmly believe that a significant piece of our personal wellness is reaching out and
touching some other life other than our own. Want to be involved? Contact the Derry Peer
Center for details!
