Bonds of unity, brotherhood manifested in very first moments of Aug 2 Iraqi invasion
Tested at hard times, Kuwaitis remain together
1990, Iraqi aggression. Years later, they
proved to be as much together, that is
when the Imam Sadiq Mosque explosion happened.
In the morning of the atrocious Iraqi
aggression, the people of Kuwait scrambled to inquire about each others, conducting phone contacts with the loved
ones, relatives and even knocking on
neighbors’ doors to inquire about their
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 1, (KUNA):
Kuwaitis have succeeded in staying
together and maintaining national unity
at hard times, when their keenness on
the solidarity appears much stronger,
thus setting an example to follow for
other nations.
Bonds of unity and brotherhood
among the Kuwaitis were manifested
in the very first moments of the Aug 2,
condition and needs. They gathered at
the diwaniahs to bolster coordination in
face of the hardships and for sake of
securing each other’s necessities.
Although the crisis dragged on for
seven months, the Kuwaitis coped with
the hardships, for many quickly
manned the bakeries to make bread for
neighborhoods’ residents. Many, who
had served behind desks in air-condi-
tioned offices, were seen in the streets
in broad daylight, sweeping and collecting garbage to keep the districts clean.
Al-Gurain House has remained an
icon of the youths’ sacrifices, those
who had fallen while resisting the
occupiers. The people gathered around
the legitimacy. The popular conference,
held in Jeddah in October 1990
affirmed the Kuwaitis’ robust loyalty to
the rulers and devotion to their country’s independence.
Kuwaitis abroad were equally active,
promoting the national cause at influential quarters. And many students
enrolled in the national army, received
military training and took part in the
homeland’s liberation. In the post-liberation times, the Kuwaitis worked
together to rebuild the country and
erase scars of the aggression.
Twenty-five years after the aggression, they re-manifested such unity in
aftermath of the recent explosion that
targeted Imam Al-Sadiq Mosque in
downtown Kuwait. Spontaneously,
many Kuwaitis lined up to donate
blood for the injured, took part in the
martyrs’ funeral and the mourning
reception at the State Grand Mosque.
MoI eyes ‘firm decision’ on rise
in number of mosque volunteers
‘Illegal training conducted on how to deal with terrorists’
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 1:
Ministry of Interior will
take a firm decision in the
coming days regarding the
increasing number of volunteers at various mosques
for the protection of the
mosques,
reports
AlShahed daily quoting security sources.
They explained that some officials of certain mosque administrations assign such volunteers
who are civilian Kuwaitis, expatriates and Bedoun residents to stop
and search worshippers to these
mosques. These volunteers use
wireless devices for receiving
direct instructions from Ministry
of Interior. However, all this is in
violation of the law.

Moreover, the security records of
a number of these volunteers are
not clean. The ministry received
several complaints in demand for
an end to such a phenomenon and
to check the legal status of these
volunteers who inspect people not
only at the entrances of the
mosques but also in parking lots
and some nearby streets that lead to
the mosque.
The issue of mosque volunteers is
becoming more complex and dangerous due to the significant
increase in their numbers without
any security control on them, a situation that could be exploited by any
terrorist organization to facilitate
one of their members and could
result in a catastrophe.
Volunteers used wireless devices
after the Friday prayers on July 1 to
receive the instructions issued by the
leaders of Ministry of Interior headed by Assistant Undersecretary of
Public Security Affairs Major
General Abdul Fattah Al-Ali to prevent anyone from approaching or
walking around the mosque.
However, such a situation could be
extremely dangerous if these civilian
volunteers circulate security instructions.
The sources revealed that
Ministry of Interior noticed some
illegal trainings being conducted
by some mosques for volunteers
on how to deal with terrorists and
suspects if they approach the
mosques, giving them the right to
deal with the suspects directly
without first referring to Ministry
of Interior.
The ministry has prepared a list
with names of the mosques volunteers so that they are placed under
security control. The ministry had
not given any formal authorization
for volunteers to exercise security
work but they were assigned by
the administrations of mosques,
which will not be allowed to continue.
The sources insisted that Ministry
of Interior is capable of protecting
the mosques without the intervention of any party and will continue to
provide round-the-clock security
around the mosques.
Govt plans to build
3,500 apartments
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 1: MP
Abdullah Al-Tamimi said the government intends to construct about
3,500 apartments as part of the new
housing plan for Kuwaiti widows
and divorced women, reports AlAnba daily.
In a press statement, Al-Tamimi
disclosed the new housing area will
be established in the next two years
as per the framework laid down in
this regard. He added some parts of
these areas will be allotted for
Kuwaiti widows and divorced
women.
In another development, a number
of lawmakers have agreed to hold a
meeting with government members
to discuss the oil price decline and
budget deficit. Sources revealed the
lawmakers want to be briefed on the
plan of the government to address
both issues.
MP Kamel Al-Awadhi pointed out
the government must lessen dependence on oil as a source of national
income and this requires looking for
alternatives. He cited the experience
of some countries where only 25
percent of national income comes
from oil.

Kuwaiti student awarded US patent
A Kuwaiti student studying dentistry at the
University of Manchester has been awarded a patent for a teeth straightening device
from the US Patent and Trademark Office.
The new device makes teeth straightening
easier and helps prevent teeth decay and
gum diseases, student Ahmad Mohammad
Al-Ali said in a press statement on
Saturday.
Al-Ali dedicated his invention to the State of
Kuwait, hoping it will soon be assessed and
promoted on industrial and commercial levels.
For his part, acting head of innovation at
Kuwait’s Sabah Al-Ahmad Center for
Giftedness and Creativity (SACGC) Khaled AlHassan, hailed the new device. This is an
achievement to add to Kuwait’s copious history of innovations and inventions, he said in
a statement today.
Al-Ali previously won two silver and
bronze medals in the International Inventions
Exhibition in the Middle East, and participated in scientific forums in Canada, South
Africa and Chile.
He was chosen as a member in the specialized magazine of the International
Association of Dental Students (IADS)
based in Geneva. (KUNA)
‘Heinous crime’
Kuwait condemns Israeli arson attack
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 1, (KUNA): The State
of Kuwait condemned strongly the “heinous
crime” committed by Israeli extremists who
torched the village of Duma, south of Nablus
in the West Bank, earlier Friday.
The attack resulted in the death of 18month-old Ali Al-Dawabshah and the
injuries to his parents and his brother when
their house was set on fire.
In a press statement, an official source at
the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs said
“such monstrous crime” should muster
every effort of Arab and international governments to stop the recurrent violations of
“criminal” settlers against helpless
Palestinians.
