We are Going Places
By Faith Place Memory Care Residents
We are going on a trip. We are going places. There’s a car
with a big trunk. The boy is carrying his own trunk. My
grandfather had a car like that, the hood is quite long.
That car was before my time.
They are going on a vacation. Maybe to Vegas. Or he’s
going to play ball. They have golf clubs and a baseball. The
boy’s name is Matt.
There’s money in that little case. It looks like a money
box. How much money do you think he has? He probably robbed a bank. I worked for the Boy Scouts
and we sold a lot of popcorn, but we did not rob banks! Mom says, “Come on, Matt. You got all the
money!” He’s going to spend it all at Vegas, or go out to eat. No, it’s probably just clothes in that
suitcase.
He’s wearing a fireman’s hat to keep the sun off his neck. That might be his dad’s helmet. Are all the
suitcases going to fit in the car? I don’t know where he is going to put that dog!
Mat’s mother and father are in the back saying, “Come on hurry up! We are going places. Give the
dog a hug and say good-by!” Dad is wondering how he’s going to fit everything in. There’s lots of bags.
Dad’s thinking, “I’m going to have some fun on this trip.” He’s going to play golf. Mom’s going to take
a nap and then she’s going shopping. All are going to have dinner and then go to bed.
It’s summertime. It wouldn’t be green if it wasn’t summer. I went golfing. I was learning to golf. We
went to Southern Illinois to see family. My favorite vacation was to South Dakota where we saw Mt.
Rushmore and Crazy Horse.
If it’s raining they make a covering that you can pull up on the car. I don’t think that looks like a
convertible. There’s a rumble seat back there to put the golf clubs. I think Mom is waving at people
we can’t see and saying good-bye.
The Lady on the Flying Trapeze
By Faith Place Memory Care residents
That ain’t me!!! She’s jumping to catch a plate.
She’s playing Frisbee. She’s catching it to keep it
from hitting her in the head. She’s playing and
she’s had her lunch. She had hamburgers and hot
dogs.
Is that a wig or a hat? Her name is Elaine. That’s a
beach hat to keep her dry and to keep the sun out
of her eyes.
Somebody must be there throwing that dish at her.
Probably her husband.
I lived on a lake on the farm. I had a good bathing
suit because I was a good swimmer. We swam
every day. It was a deep pond.
Elaine will be hot and sweaty, so next she will take
a shower. Her husband is there with her and a son
and a daughter. All are there enjoying the air. She
has sunglasses on because it is a bright hot day. She probably hits that beach every day. In fact she
lives on the beach. Other people are on the beach too. Right there, there’s a lemonade stand.
She’s jumping pretty high for as old as she is. I thought there might be strings holding her up.
She’s solving her problems by getting away and enjoying the weather. Elaine has a smile on her face.
She’s in pretty good shape for an old lady. She’s 70 or 80 years old. Oh heaven’s no! she’s not a day
older than me! Me? I don’t know how old I am? We are all 16 and not a day older.
She keeps in good shape by jumping. She probably always does that in the summer. Elaine is in
Florida. Elaine went home from the beach to do her chores and feed the chickens.
Alice and the Birthday Party
By Prairieview residents
She’s having a wonderful party! Her name is Alice.
Maybe the party is for June. She is going to be 102.
Alice is catching a ball or a balloon. Alice’s family is
there. Alice has two sisters. Alice is playing with a
Frisbee. Her sister, Marie, threw her the Frisbee.
Afterwards, Alice is going to take a shower, she will
then go to lunch and have a drink of champagne
and sparkling grape juice. She probably has a
boyfriend who is visiting with her whose name is
John and is playing the piano at the birthday party.
There will be lots of dancing. They will have
appetizers and chili, which is June’s favorite!
Nobody can jump that high. Alice is physically fit
and has a beautiful body! Alice and John left
June’s party and got married and they lived happily ever after! The end.
Guy with a Fish
By a Prairieview resident
He’s happy. Because he’s got a fish. The fish says, “Hey, this is what
happened!” Yes. He’s happy. He wants to…well, the fish is from a fish
farm.
He’s going to get that fish. He let the fish get the bait. I fished with
my children. It was at a place, a big place. It was quite big. We
laughed. We had fun.
But he’s going to put that fish back.
Shep was Our Dog
By a Prairieview resident
This is a dog deciding whether a bone is in
there or not. A small child could get in there,
but I would want the small child to get out of
there.
That’s a telephone. There’s just chatter and
the dog knows what to do. Well…I’m not sure
he knows what to do. Right there by his nose
is the part that helps him.
There’s something going on over there. Like a
group of people working and something
happened to them. I’m not really too sure. That dog has enough sense to get help. So he’s going to
bark into the phone. He’s trying to get some attention. He keeps barking. He has a puppy and that
puppy needs some help. You might think I’m crazy, but more or less it’s quite funny!
Eventually the puppy in the back there wants to get away, but he’s not close enough to his mama. So
children come to help the puppy. He’s pretty determined. Our Shep was that way. If anybody came
to the house he would bark in such a way that we knew what was going on. He was like that with the
kids. He tried to get the kids to go where he wanted to go. “Come on, Shep! You can do it!” No
matter wha,t he found a way to do what he had to do.
We were out in the field once. I don’t know what happened but he was trying to help us. Those dogs
watch and they will wait until they can help. I remember saying once, “Shep, go and get so and so. I
need some help.” And he stopped, took two steps and he turned and left me!! And then the person
who could help me showed up. Shep was our dog.
Old Timers
By Prairieview residents
Maybe their names are John and Philip.
They are talking about old times, because,
well… they are “old-timers.” They are
talking about a trip to the Hawaiian
islands. Or maybe they are talking about
farming. If they are talking about farming,
it is bragging about who has the most
corn in the silo!
These two old guys are friends. After their
meeting they will go home and argue
with their wives. Later John and Philip will travel on that Hawaiian trip together. There’s lots of
things to trigger their minds and to see in Hawaii.
But for today, they left their wives at another place. Maybe they are at a zoo or a Lutheran
church or standing under the corner light in front of a coffee shop. They might be standing in
front of silos.
They are wearing pants that look like Grandpa’s pants. I don’t know about those pants. Those
aren’t pants that should even be worn to the fair! That hat looks like my grandpa’s hat. They
remind me of my grandpa. He and my grandma used to come and visit us from North Dakota.
They would spend two weeks here. Then when it was time for them to leave we would all
stand around at the train station and have a “cry out.” Because we weren’t sure when we
were ever going to see them again.
That one guy is saying, “I have a cigarette and I am going home.”
John and Philip say, “I guess we will be going home now.” It has been nice being with you.
