These words are from the poem ‘A Pair of Sarus Cranes‘ written by Manmohan Singh. This poem tells us about the grief of a female bird who pines away to death after her male bird had been killed by the hunters. ‘A wave of seas‘ refers to death which had come to carry the soul of the bird away. Yes, I agree with the concerns raised by the writer here. I would urge my friends not to go on a shopping spree, purchasing consumables for which they have no need, as I would do myself, if it is not necessary to purchase things from a mall, when they can be bought from the local shopkeeper. This would keep us away from the discount trap of the big malls, which lure us to buy things we don’t need, just because they are cheaper than the local market. Why should we shop till we drop. I would try to avoid junk food and only buy nutritive food. V. 24. Sample Question Papers (SSLC) | 3 38. Gaultier : Gaultier is an excellent pastry cook who owns a bakery in Paris. He is quite a pompous man who believes that it is below his dignity to be seen carrying an eel pie through the streets. This play also brings out how foolish he is as he is fooled twice by Jean and Pierre, though in his own opinion he is very smart. Marion : She is Gaultier’s wife, quite stout but comely as well. She obeys her husband without questioning him. She lacks intelligence but has a good sense of humour. 39. In the first line itself Wordsworth says that mother nature beckoned him. He calls the lake silent and also says that sound was coming from the mountain. Later on, he says that the mountain was following him steadily and was looking quite threatening. Through these examples we can clearly see that for Wordsworth, nature was a living presence. 40. I would definitely like to live with the speaker in the poem. He comes across as a person who does not believe in physical and mental barriers between people. Caste, race, religion, creed , etc., seem to have no importance in his life. God has created this world as one place, where we should learn to live in harmony with one another. The reason behind the unrest in the world is our distrust for one another, which forces us to create ‘walls’ between us. We certainly require more people like the speaker who dislike these walls. As a result they don’t feel comfortable in the morning and their alertness and concentration is also affected. This leads to loss of energy also. People should realize the importance of sleep which is a boon to us. Sleep deficiency results in many health related problems like diabetes, obesity and depression. Hence, the children must be made to understand that they must have proper sleep so as to energise themselves. Meditation and yoga can help them a lot in overcoming sleeplessness. All the body activities will return to their normal self and they will feel refreshed. Yoga and meditation are the best therapies and are an answer to present day lifestyle diseases. These will keep them stress-free which further helps in keeping good health and improves concentration power. (B) High Tech Devices–A Boon or Bane In today’s fast changing scenario, numerous high tech devices have flooded the market. All credit goes to science which helps us in advancing in various fields. Modern age is better known as the Science Age. Some people are misusing technology and are not taking advantage of the wonders of science. Today, youngsters can be seen busy with chatting, surfing, playing video-games and what not. These have become a part of growing up in the digital world. But all this is leading our children towards the wrong path. They have got distracted and it has cramped their social as well as academic development. They must realise that these devices benefit us. This shows us how humble he was. When Dronacharya unjustly asked him for his right thumb as recompense, he cut it off immediately, showing his love for him. He did not harbour any ill-feelings. The river has brought down the finest silt from the highlands of Abyssinia and from Central Africa and laid it down in the valley through the years. Electricity is such a blessing. It is hard to imagine the life of a modern man without electricity even for a day. Just think of a day without electricity. I had to spend a day without electricity last week. Early in the morning, our town was hit by a dust storm. The high winds uprooted trees and electric poles at many places. As a result, there was no electricity supply. It was the month of June. I felt as if I were boiling like a potato. I came out of my study sweating badly. I took a hand-fan and started fanning myself. But it gave no relief from the intense (very great) heat of summer. I was thirsty, but there was no ice, no cold water. It was a horrible experience, and I felt like a fish out of water. I got some relief in the evening when the electric supply was resumed. (B) How I Prepared Tea One day some of my friends came to my house. My mother was not at home. So I myself had to prepare tea for my friends. I seated them in the drawing room. Then I went to the kitchen and lighted a stove. I measured four cups of water and put it into a kettle. I put the kettle on the stove. After some time the water began to boil. Now, I added four teaspoonfuls of sugar to it. I wanted to make strong tea. This is quite true of India, which is the second most populous country in the world. Earlier, it was believed that a big family is good, but that no longer holds true. A family should have just one child. Our government is trying its best to control the growth of population by offering incentives and taxation benefits. It is trying to encourage people to adopt family planning methods. A less populous society will be financially and socially self-sufficient besides being more literate. Where a small family is concerned it is possible to afford good education and health. This will lead to a healthier and knowledgeable society. Independence Day Celebration 5 The Independence Day was celebrated on 15 August with great pomp and show in our school. The whole school seemed to have a patriotic spirit. The celebration was to start at 8 a.m. Everything had been well organised. Major General I.P. Dutta was invited as chief guest to grace the occasion. He arrived punctually and the welcome song was sung in his honour. The chief guest hoisted the National Flag and the National Anthem was sung. A variety of programmes depicting patriotism were performed. The theme of the items was based on the contribution of the martyrs. A small skit on Shaheed Bhagat Singh was performed by the students of class XII. There were group songs, solos, qawwalis and speeches. One such act is the rampant use of plastics. If we want to save our Earth, we have to ban plastics. Plastic is a consistent agent of destruction. The impact of other environmental problems like carbon emission from factories, and motor cars is immediately seen and remedial measures are also taken up fast. Plastic, however, is a slow killer and its impact on the future goes unnoticed. Of course, there are some bio-degradable plastics, but majority of them are non-biodegradable. Once they are used, they are discarded. Each year more and more plastic bags are littering the environment. These bags find their way into sewer lines, parks, beaches, etc. If they are burnt, they give off toxic fumes, which leads to pollution. Many animals eat the plastic bags mistaking them for food. This might lead to their death. This ingested plastic bag does not decompose even after the death of the animals. To produce plastic bags, petroleum is required. Petroleum is a non-renewable resource and so should not be used for such things. Considering all this, we can see that it is hightime we banned plastic. We should preserve our Earth and not poison it. (B) Fight Against Corruption Corruption has been the bane of society since times immemorial. People have been trying to fight against it, but there have been very few successful attempts. In the society many people turn a blind eye towards corruption. Tolerating corruption is as bad as beign corrupt. We should have the strength to oppose corruption. We have seen how people like Anna Hazare have opposed corruption. Such movements give strength to others also. Media is also an important tool for exposing and fighting corruption. Where other people have failed, the Media has served to bring criminals to book. All of us should fight tooth and nail against corruption, only then can our country progress. (C)Over–Population The world is reeling under the weight of over–population which is increasing by each day. The resources of the earth are limited and the numbers of people to use them are more. The boat was moored in a rocky cave. The poet united the rope and rowed it considering it to be a joy ride. 33. This extract has been taken from ‘The Girl who was Anne Frank’. Anne had written a diary in which she described her life. This line was written by her when she was in the hiding in a Secret Annexe. Her family alongwith four Jews had been residing in the Annexe for sixteen months and they did not have much information about the world outside. She wanted to came out of her isolation but could not. That is why she has composed herself to a song-bird whose wings have been brutally torn. 34. The given line is an extract from ‘The Pie and The Tart’. This line has been spoken by Pierre where she is talking about the eels baked by M. Gaultier. Pierre is complimenting Gaultier as an excellent baker. ‘Them’ refers to the eels which give themselves up when Gaultier is there. VII. If one feeds the poor for selfish reasons, i.e., to gain fame, then the action is not moral. However, if he feeds the poor out of genuine concern then the action can be termed as a moral act. 36. The flat was very shabbily furnished at $ 8 per week. There was a letter box and an electric button for a bell which did not work. There was pier-glass between the windows. There was nothing remarkable about the flat. 37. It can result in many water-borne diseases. There were few visitors due to the filthy ambience. I want to make the concerned authorities aware that they must ensure the regular cleaning of water at proper intervals. Draining can also be done. To restore its popularity, a canteen or snackbar can be opened. This place can become a popular holiday spot only if taken care of properly.
