12th Grade Summer Reading Mrs. Santee Beowulf (all students) Students may choose one from the following: Heroic Analysis of the character Beowulf: 1. Analyze the representation of Beowulf as the quintessential Anglo-Saxon hero as portrayed in one of the following songs: “I am Beowulf” or “A Hero Comes Home.” Things you must include: a. Thorough explanation of the Anglo-Saxon heroic code b. Analysis of how Beowulf exemplifies that code c. Analysis of how the song accomplishes its task of representing this Anglo Saxon hero via music and lyrics 2. Present a mock trial defense argument to the class in defense of Beowulf. Scenario: Beowulf is brought up on charges for the murder of the dragon. Your defense must include arguments for Beowulf’s actions based upon the Angle-Saxon heroic code and his overall character as exemplified throughout the epic. You must have a written opening statement and a list of witnesses and exhibits to use during the trial. The class will serve as the jury. 3. Compare and contrast Beowulf with a modern day superhero. This paper will center on an analysis of the differences in cultural expectations for both heroes and how each one fulfills those expectations. Therefore, the Anglo-Saxon heroic code will need to be included for Beowulf as well as an understanding of the cultural definition, within the context of the movie or comic strip, of the modern day hero. Movie and/or comic strip clips will need to be included as visual aids. 4. Rewrite Beowulf into a short story. The focus of the story is to practice indirect characterization. Choose one episode from the epic to rewrite with the goal of writing to reveal to your audience, indirectly, who Beowulf is and how he fulfills the Anglo-Saxon heroic code. Story must include: a. Dialogue b. One monologue c. Metaphor d. Simile e. Kenning f. Hyperbole Midsummer Night’s Dream (AP students only) Throughout history there has been a general understanding that appearances can be deceiving. A person may go through life without anyone understanding the true reality of their character. William Shakespeare, one of the greatest writers of all time, understood the relationship between appearance and reality. Choose a scene from the play and address the theme of perception v. reality. Describe one character’s perception of the truth. Then contrast that with the actual truth. Last, discuss Shakespeare’s purpose in developing this contrast (humor, depth of character development, confuse the reader, suspense, etc.) Use textual evidence to support each aspect of your paper.
