Apollo 13 Team Building Activity

Teams race against the clock and the elements to
save their team mates in this action-packed scenario.
OVERVIEW
Teams must build a device that can connect two differently shaped “air filters”
aboard the infamous spaceship out of an assortment of materials, while under a
very tight timeline. But once built, the step by step instructions must be successfully communicated to their team mates who are stuck in “outer space.” Teams
will need to communicate clearly and effectively, while trying to solve a problem
from two directions at once.
GOALS
Thank you for facilitating
our team building event.
Very fun and impactful
exercise that resonated
with our leaders and
managers. I am sure we
will refer back to the
exercise many times
this year as we face
many challenges
growing our business.

Agenda & Activity Descriptions
Welcome & Warm-Ups (10-15 minutes) Atlanta Challenge staff welcome the group and set expectations for the
event. We then lead some fun warm-up activities that get
the group moving and ready to fully participate.
Optional: Thinking Styles Module (45-60 minutes) In
this interactive learning game, participants gain valuable
insights into their own strengths on a team, and how to
appreciate and utilize other people’s strengths. Using this
knowledge, participants evaluate how they can be better
team players and support their team mates.
Team-Up (5-10 minutes) We conduct a fun, light-activity
game to randomly sort participants into teams. Teams are
then given bandanas and do a short team identity activity
to help build camaraderie and competitiveness.
Instructions (5 minutes) Teams are given written instructions for the challenge and allowed to ask a few questions
about the rules. They then have a few minutes to brainstorm before the core challenge begins.
Construction Challenge (20 minutes) Teams must use
the miscellaneous materials supplied to them in order to
create an air-tight connection between the two different
shaped “air filters” on the “lunar module.” While doing so,
they must also be developing step-by-step instructions
that will be transmitted to the astronauts on the space capsule to make the device that will save their lives.
Communication Challenge (10 minutes) Each team is
given a new set of materials. They then partner with another team and must simultaneously describe how to build
what they designed, while also building what the other
team designed. They are successful if each team has built
an exact copy of what was communicated to them within
the time limit.
Team Review & Wrap-up Activity (15 minutes) The team
shares their observations about how they performed, and
how to apply those lessons to specific situations faced on
the job. We end with a fun, but thought provoking activity
and a team picture with their trophies and devices.
