– small groups will use the words to predict mood, tone, theme, plot, etc.
*Recognize/explain influence of British history and culture on literature of the
period – Anglo-Saxon era (notes and discussion) and begin background
question sheet (small group) – sheets due Wednesday, January 25
Homework – Complete background sheet
*Assign and explain journal assignment
*Discussion of reading and note taking strategies – begin reading and taking
notes on “The Seafarer” in class (key skills and terms: lyric poetry, caesura,
kenning, Christian/pagan duality)
*Lyric poetry activity – small group – students will analyze given passages of
lyric poetry to determine its use of alliteration, caesura, and rhythm
Homework – Complete background sheet, work on journals
*Background sheet due by late bell
*Complete reading of “The Seafarer” in class (key skills and terms: lyric
poetry, caesura, kenning, Christian/pagan duality)
*Timeline activity – small group – students will use a given timeline of the
Anglo-Saxon period to determine the order of key historical and literary
events of the period (numeracy)
Homework – study for “The Seafarer” quiz, work on journals.
*Review activity for “The Seafarer” (using Socratic app if I can get it working!)
*Elegiac tone activity – students will listen to a modern song, citing elegiac
phrases and words
*Glory Activity – individual students will formulate answers to a series of
questions about the earning and meaning of glory; students will be asked to
assess the hero status of given famous people – whole class discussion
*Introduce and begin reading and analysis of Beowulf (key skills/ideas: epic
poetry, simile, metaphor, caesura, kenning, personification, tone, point of
view, pagan/Christian duality)
Homework – journals, study for quiz
*Quiz on “The Seafarer” – short answer
*Continue reading Beowulf (key skills/ideas: epic poetry, simile, metaphor,

*Inference activity – small group work – students will be given excerpts from
Beowulf and work to determine what information about the beliefs and
practices of the Anglo-Saxons are evidenced in the work
