PRODUCTION SUPPORT
Good Evening,
Welcome to the 36th Annual WAMI Award Show. The 35th was a fantastic
time in Milwaukee, but we’re thrilled to be back in Appleton, at the beautiful
Fox Cities Performing Arts Center. WAMI is proud of the “northeast” musical
community coming together in helping to make the Awards Show better and
better each time we’re here.
Thank you to everyone who has supported WAMI these past 36 years,
including sponsors, venues, musicians, music business professionals, and of
course, all the Wisconsin music lovers out there. WAMI is proud to play a
role in the Wisconsin music scene by providing workshops which educate
musicians, by organizing events such as Fast Pitch and CD Roulette to help
musicians receive noteworthy gigs, and by providing a forum which allows
musicians to network with other musicians. WAMI is committed to serving
our music community and is honored to provide charitable contributions each
year to other dedicated organizations which support music.
WAMI has recently updated the website and our near/long-term goal is to
provide as much history (Hall of Fame inductees, performers/nominees/
winners) as we can to the website. This will be quite an undertaking, but
will be more than worth it to have all this WAMI history a click away for
Wisconsin music professionals and fans to enjoy.
At times it seems like the world becomes more troubled, but time and time
again, I see how music brings all of us closer together. WAMI and I thank
everyone who shares their gift, because your gift of song is truly a blessing for
the world. To all the Wisconsin musicians out there, keep believing in yourself,
because your talent truly makes a difference (for the better) in people’s lives.
To those in attendance tonight celebrate the accomplishments of the musicians
and music industry professionals who are being recognized, but even more
important, enjoy the time spent with your peers tonight. To all the nominees,
congratulations on an outstanding year!
Enjoy the show and as always, DEFEND THE FAITH. \m/

ABOUT TONIGHT’S PERFORMERS
WIFEE And The HUZzBAND: Born in Door County in 2012, this 10
piece powerhouse band is fronted by heartfelt yet explosive vocalists Ruby James
and Stephen Cooper, who are backed by an assemblage of rock, jazz, and punk
musicians.
Their music is described as “new vintage”, combining cutting edge trends with
the fun rock of the 50’s and 60’s, paired with a big band sound that sizzles. Be
prepared to get out of your seat and dance!
RED LIGHT SAINTS: One of the Midwest’s most exciting modern rock
groups, Red Light Saints formed in 2010. The 5 member band from Green Bay
has a reputation for their outstanding musicianship, powerful stage presence, and
contagious energy. The recipient of several WAMI nominations, and a 2013 win,
Red Light Saints has become one of the Midwest’s most exciting modern rock
groups.
WHISKEY Of The DAMNED: From Milwaukee, Whiskey of the Damned
is a five piece, Celtic-influenced rock group put together by Ireland native Eoin
McCarthy. Whiskey of the Damned is dedicated to playing high energy, raucous
concerts filled with an unmistakable mixture of American and Irish rock. Described
as a mix of The Pogues, Dropkick Murphy’s, and Flogging Molly, the quintet has a
reputation as “the perfect band to party to.”
THE FAMILY BUSINESS: Originally formed in 2005 while most of the band
was still in high school, the Family Business has played hundreds of shows over the
past 11 years. Hailing from the Madison area, the band has been performing across
the country while continuing to write and record music that has been labeled as
cross-genre: ranging from blues, folk, and soul to rock n’ roll.
KYLE MEGNA & THE MONSOONS: Their music has been defined as
having a “dark-indie-blues-folk-rock feel”, while the seven musicians in the band are
referred to as a tight-knit group of charismatic players with diverse backgrounds,
who know how to have fun while keeping it professional. Kyle Megna and the
Monsoons bring creativity and improvisation to every show.
ALMIGHTY VINYL: “A tribute to the music when vinyl was king” summarizes
the mission of the 7 piece band hailing from Waukesha. Almighty Vinyl plays music
the way it was meant to be. The band prides itself in playing no frills, classic rock,
giving today’s audiences yesterday’s concert experience. Almighty Vinyl strives to
recreate the vocals, harmonies, and instrumentation you’d hear when you dropped
that needle onto your favorite 33 1/3 record.
TWEED FUNK: Formed in late 2010, Tweed Funk’s national ascent has
been driven by their horn-fueled, Memphis flavored blues, roots, and soul. This
Milwaukee, Wisconsin 6 piece soul-blues revue is fronted by Joseph “Smokey”
Holman, who recorded under Curtis Mayfield in the early 70’s. Tweed Funk boasts
5 WAMI Wins in the last 4 years for the band and it’s members. Tweed Funk is a
favorite at festivals and venues in 17 states.
DAVE STEFFEN BAND: Determined to find the hottest young players he
could find, Dave formed his trio hooking up with Craig Neuser on bass and vocals
and with drummer, Spencer Panosh. Several of the band’s songs have been used
on the popular daytime soap, The Young and the Restless. (for more info, see the
Dave Steffen Hall of Fame bio.)
OUR MISSION: The Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) is a volunteer
organization whose purpose is to educate and recognize the achievements and
accomplishments of individuals in the Wisconsin music industry.
In addition, we endeavor to provide annual scholarships to students and/or
emerging artists in the Wisconsin community; promote the Wisconsin music scene;
and execute an awards ceremony annually.
BACKGROUND:

PEE WEE KING
Global “Honorary” Hall of fame Award
STYX
PEE WEE KING
Julius Frank Anthony Kuczynski was born in Milwaukee in 1914. Soon after, the
family moved to Abrams, Wisconsin, where Julius Frank learned to play fiddle
from his father, a polka musician. He performed with his father’s band, playing
fiddle and accordion. Giving himself the same last name as bandleader Wayne
King, “Frankie King” formed a band and appeared on radio in Racine. After
high school, his“King’s Jesters” performed all over the Midwest, blending
country and polka music.
In 1933, when he was 19, his band played on the Milwaukee radio show
“Badger State Barn Dance”, where they were discovered by rising star Gene
Autry. Autry hired them as his backup band, and gave King the nickname “Pee
Wee” for his fivefoot six-inch height.
In 1936, King left Autry, and formed The Golden West Cowboys, out of
Louisville, KY. In 1937, Redd Stewart joined the lineup; he became King’s
songwriting partner. Also in 1937, King married Lydia Frank, whose father
became band manager and who got the band the invite to join the Grand Ole
Opry. The band joined the Opry amidst controversy, for their flashy wardrobe,
their showmanship including the use of accordion, horns, drums and electric
guitars, and for including polka and waltz rhythms within their songs.
In 1946, King, with Stewart, composed his best-known tune “The Tennessee
Waltz”. King’s other hits included “Slow Poke” and “You Belong to Me”.
King’s band earned recognition as best country band from Billboard and
Cashbox magazines. In 1955, “The Pee Wee King Show” made it to prime time
TV, on ABC. His band toured until he retired from performing in 1969, having
written/cowritten more than 400 songs.
He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1970) and the
Country Music Hall of Fame (1974). By bringing electric guitars and drums to
Nashville, wearing flashy cowboy suits, crafting pop hits from country sounds,
and having country music success on television, King blazed a trail for other
country performers to follow.
He died of a heart attack in Louisville, Kentucky, in 2000, at age 86.
LYLE MAYS
Music has been a large part of Lyle Mays life for as long as he can remember.
Born in 1953, to a musical family in Wausaukee, Wisconsin, he was always
encouraged to explore new forms of expression. His first piano teacher, Lula
Otto, was also his first grade teacher. As a teen, Lyle attended the Shell Lake
Stage Band Jazz Camps and studied with such talents as Marian McPartland.
After a brief stint at UW-Eau Claire, Lyle transferred and studied composition
and arrangement at North Texas State University. Next, he toured with
Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd for 8 months. While appearing at the
1975 Wichita Jazz Festival, Lyle met twenty year old guitarist, Pat Metheny.
Lyle moved to the east coast in 1977, and the two formed a musical alliance
that has proven to be among the most artistically successful of the past three
plus decades. He co-wrote most of the music for the 11 Grammy-winning
group’s albums, using crystal clear virtuosity, unconventional melodies, and
cinematic scope of orchestration.
In addition, Lyle has been nominated four times for his own work. He has
written acclaimed projects for stage and screen, including off-Broadway and
film scores. The list of musicians he has recorded with includes Joni Mitchell,
Bobby McFerrin, Toots Thielemans, Earth, Wind, & Fire, and Paul McCandless.
He’s also composed and recorded music for children’s records, including the
Tale of Peter Rabbit, with text by Meryl Streep. To date, he’s released 6 solo
albums. His most recent recording, The Ludwigsburg Concert, with the Lyle
Mays Quartet was released in 2015, and stands up against previous works.
DAVE STEFFEN
Dave Steffen hails from Plymouth, Wisconsin, where he began playing guitar as a
young boy. During high school, he played in his first band, The Wanderers. By the
time he left high school, in 1969, his band Love Society signed to Scepter Records,
the same label Dionne Warwick was on.
Within 5 years, he had also released recordings with RCA and Mercury Records. His
talent as a songwriter and singer, in addition to his prowess as a guitar player, earned
Steffen and his band special recognition in Billboard and Cashbox magazines.
After teen band successes, Sunblind Lion formed in 1974 in Plymouth. Several of
its members, including Dave, graduated from early ‘70s bands Love Society and
Phase III. Sunblind Lion released three albums between 1976 and 1980 which were
characterized by intelligent lyrics, impressive guitar playing, and grandiose keyboard
work.
After Sunblind Lion’s regional success, Dave inaugurated The Dave Steffen Band,
playing venues in Wisconsin, opening for such national acts as Rush, Boston, Styx,
and REO Speedwagon, as well as headlining his own shows.
In 1986, The Dave Steffen Band headed west to the San Francisco Bay area music
scene. During his 9 year stay, Dave was fortunate to open for groups like Huey
Lewis and the News, Santana, Robin Trower, and Journey. Guitar virtuosos like
Carlos Santana and Neil Schon noticed Dave’s guitar prowess, and would seek out
his performances to jam with him in a club setting. During this time, Dave continued
to write and record his own music, releasing three more albums. Dave returned to
Wisconsin in 1995. Since then, he’s performed solo and with his bands, adding to his
resume a quartet including acoustic guitars, drums and bass, a variation of the Dave
Steffen Band, The String Benders. Dave continues to gig regularly, his blues guitar
sound unmistakeable to fans and admirers. After releasing 10 albums, his 11th CD
“Fishing Town” was released in 2015; one reviewer described the music: “…it opens
with straight ahead rock’ n roll leading into more traditional blues then rolling you
into a little feel good reggae.”

Harmony, chemistry, balance, grit, dexterity. determination. These words define the
essence of Styx, the multi-megamillion-selling rock band that has forged an indelible
legacy.
Twins Chuck and John Panozzo, along with Dennis DeYoung worked the Chicagoarea bar circuit in the ’60’s as The Tradewinds. By 1970, the group added John
Curulewski, changing their name to TW4; James “JY” Young joined a year later.
TW4 signed to Wooden Nickel Records, an RCA subsidiary, and months later,
changed their name to Styx, after a river in Greek mythology that ran through
Hades, “the land of the dead”.
Their national break came in 1975 with the single “Lady,” featuring the blaring vocal
triads that are a Styx trademark. From 1977 until their breakup in 1984, every one of
their album releases sold platinum or better. Hit singles included “Come Sail Away”
(1977); “Fooling Yourself” and “Blue Collar Man (1978); “Babe” (1979); and “The
Best of Times” and “Too Much Time on My Hands” (1981).
In 1983 the group toured with a theatrical presentation of Kilroy Was Here, an
anticensorship concept album. Group members went their separate ways in 1984,
for a while, as DeYoung and Shaw, tried solo careers.
Four members of Styx, with newcomer Glen Burtnik, released the comeback, Edge
of the Century, in 1990. It’s “Show Me the Way” became a theme song during the
Gulf War, and “Love at First Sight” was a Top 30 single that next spring.
Shaw returned to the band when he helped re-record “Lady” for 1995’s Greatest
Hits. Drummer John Panozzo developed a debilitating alcohol problem, so in 1996
Styx hired a temporary replacement for Panozzo, Todd Sucherman. Late in 1996,
Panozzo died, and Sucherman became permanent. Return to Paradise was the firstever gold record for Styx’s new label, CMC International. During the sessions for
1999’s Brave New World, DeYoung developed a rare virus, which made the singer
extremely sensitive to light. DeYoung was able to eventually overcome his disorder,
but not before Shaw and Young opted to enlist new singer Laurence Gowan and
issued a pair of live releases in the early 21st century -- 2000’s Arch Allies: Live at
Riverport (Styx paired with REO Speedwagon) and 2001’s Styx World: Live 2001.
The line-up continued to evolve as Burtnik returned, on bass, to replace Chuck
Panozzo, who left the band due to illness.
Burtnik left the clan in 2003, and there was only one name that made sense to join
Styx, multi-instrumentalist Ricky Phillips. Styx current touring line-up is: Lawrence
Gowan: lead vocals and keys; James “JY” Young (since 1972): lead vocals, guitars;
Tommy Shaw: lead vocals, guitars; Todd Sucherman: drums, percussion; Ricky
Phillips: bass guitar, vocals; and whenever possible, Chuck Panozzo: (founding
member) now living with HIV, joins the band on bass and vocals.
To date, the band has 32 shows booked for 2016-17, so plan to see WAMI’s 2016
Honorary Global Hall of Fame inductee when Styx performs at a venue near you.
