Activ Announces New CEO
The Activ Board is pleased to announce that Danielle Newport has been appointed as the new CEO and
Managing Director of Activ, commencing on 1st April 2016.
Joining Activ in 2011 as the Chief Financial Officer, Danielle progressed to the position of General Manager
Strategy and Finance before taking up her current role as General Manager of Strategy.
Activ President Andrew Edwards said Danielle’s senior leadership roles with Activ, along with her extensive
experience, made her the ideal candidate to lead the organisation during such a significant period of change.
“The disability sector is currently going through one of the most significant reforms in its history. Danielle
brings an extensive amount of experience and passion to the organisation and we are confident that
under her leadership Activ will be well positioned to succeed in the NDIS environment - one that provides
opportunity and lifestyle choices to enable our customers to pursue a better life,” he said.
Danielle will take over the role from outgoing CEO Tony Vis, who has been with the organisation for 18 years.
Tony has been an outstanding advocate for Activ and the people we support and we wish him all the best in
his future endeavours.

President’s Message
Over the last four months the Activ Board has led a comprehensive
search to find a new CEO following the decision by Tony Vis to step
down from the role. After a robust recruitment process, it is my very
great pleasure to announce the appointment of Danielle Newport as
the new CEO and Managing Director of Activ.
Many of you will know Danielle from her current role at Activ as the
General Manager of Strategy. Danielle has held many leadership roles
during her four and half years with the organisation and brings with her
a depth of knowledge, experience and passion that made her the ideal
candidate for the role of Activ CEO.

Tony says farewell
I will finally be stepping down from my role as
CEO at the end of March and I wanted to take this
opportunity in my last Activ News to say a heartfelt
thank you to each and every one of you for your
support over the past 18 years, the first 10 of which
I was part of the Activ Board and particularly the last
eight as CEO.
My Activ journey has been a truly wonderful
experience and overall a very important part of my
life. I have had the pleasure and privilege of meeting
many remarkable people, sharing in their successes
and triumphs, taking part in their celebrations and
hearing their stories. As they say in the classics, all
good things must come to an end.
I have seen the disability sector grow and evolve
and have been fortunate to not only work with Activ,
but also many sector colleagues and our peak
body NDS. There is constructive collaboration in
our sector in WA, with talented people genuinely
committed to advancing the lives of people with
disability. This is particularly important as we
negotiate our way through the changing world of
NDIS.
In this regard our staff underpin what Activ does and
delivers. They are who make us and who fulfil our
purpose of a better life – all of you should take great
pride in what you do and I thank you for it.
As I reflect on my time with Activ, and indeed in the
disability sector, I am met with mixed emotions. I am
looking forward to the next chapter of my life, but
know that Activ will always hold a very special place
in my heart.
I am confident that Danielle Newport as incoming
CEO will take on the role with passion, commitment
and dedication and I congratulate her and wish her
the best of luck.
To everyone I have worked with over the journey
– thank you for your commitment, support and
dedication.
To those customers and families who have allowed
me the chance to know them and share in their lives
– thank you. It’s been an absolute pleasure.

recently got married at an intimate ceremony in Busselton. Lachlan
and Stephanie met at HACC and Activ has played an important part
in both their lives with the wedding attended by family, friends and

“I would like to say a special thanks to Lorelle Johnson, Rosemary

members it would not have come together,” said Stephanie.
“Our wedding went really well even though there were bushfires
around.”
“Everyone had said that we had put it together so well with minimal
support. Everyone who came said it was the best wedding they
had ever been to!” said Stephanie.

Congratulations to Activ Board Member Ian Brown who has
accepted the position as Board Deputy Chair and Deputy President
from Tina Thomas.
A member of Activ’s board since 2013, Ian is looking forward to
taking on the new position and playing an exciting and guiding role
in Activ’s future. An Entrepreneur in Residence at INSEAD (Europe’s

years’ experience in corporate and consultancy positions. Ian
has taken various organisations and turned them into successful

board in 2013.
“I have always been connected with the Disability Sector and when
I moved to Perth four years ago I wanted to build on the work that
I had done in Melbourne in the space. Joining the Board at Activ
seemed like the perfect fit and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time
working with such an exceptional group of people,” he said.
Ian is looking forward to building on the opportunities that will arise
as the sector continues to evolve in the changing world of NDIS.
“The Board and Executive Team have been working towards the
shift to NDIS for a number of years now and I am confident that as
an organisation we are well placed for the changes ahead,” said
Ian.

Murray Vis
Murray Vis and his friends
Vale Murray Vis
It is with great sadness that Activ Kellerberrin acknowledges the
passing of customer Murray Vis.
Murray was born on 11 April 1962 in Derby, Western Australia and
spent his early years in the north west of WA. Murray’s journey with
Activ began in 1981 at Activ Geraldton. He then moved to Perth
and onto Albany. In 2002 he joined us at Activ Kellerberrin until his
passing on Friday 29 January 2016.
Murray will be hugely missed by us all, most especially by his long
term housemates at Iris Litis House – Brian, Fred, Hamish and Scott.
‘Muz’ was a man of few words, a homebody and a hard worker;
he had many roles both in his home at Iris Litis House, the PS&C
Centre and within the Kellerberrin community. Since his passing the
consistent comment made by staff and his housemates alike is “I
didn’t realise just how many jobs Muz did in a day and who’s going
to do them now?!”
Muz’s many and varied volunteer roles and home duties ranged
from Garden Hand in the Plantique Nursery at PS&C, enthusiastic
Chef for himself and his housemates, Cleaner of the Keller Ambo
hall, Deliverer of Meals on Wheels to local Seniors, Veggie and Herb
grower at his home, Whirlwind Vax Man, Bird House Painter, House
Sweeper and last but by no means least, Bin Man. Putting out the
PS&C bins on Thursday afternoons for Friday bin collection won’t be
same without Muz by our side!
Muz’s great enjoyments in life were watching TV, listening to music
and of course, food.
A Memorial will be held at the Kellerberrin Cemetery, Ashes Walk at
10:30am on Monday 11th April 2016 for the interment of Murray’s
ashes and a celebration of his life will take place at Iris Litis House
afterwards.

Margaret and Paul
celebrate 75 years
Margaret Heath and Tony Vis
Paul Travers and Tony Vis
Margaret Heath and Paul Travers have
been working at Activ for a combined
total of 75 years. The dedicated duo
were recently recognised for their
outstanding service at the East Victoria Park Service Awards.
Paul, who started working at Activ in 1981, has been an employee for 35 years. He currently works four
days a week and enjoys labelling, packing show bags, working on the New Mountain Mosquito Sticks and
helping his supervisor.
Employee Coordinator Alicia Waters explains, “Paul is a very kind and caring person who likes to joke
around at work and enjoys talking to the ladies, especially his friend Rachel. He enjoys travelling to the City
and Fremantle with his carer and his favourite TV show is Home and Away!”
Paul’s colleague Margaret joined Activ in 1986. Currently transitioning to retirement, Margaret works two
days a week. She enjoys packing and labelling and when not at work, likes going to the gym, listening to
music and going out dancing.
Margaret lives in a group home with Rosie, Joanne and Jodee and also loves to help out around the house
and talk to her sister Bridget.
On behalf of everyone at Activ, we’d like to send a huge congratulations to Margaret and Paul and also all
the employees who recently received Service Awards. Thanks for all your hard work!
Hayden takes home the title
Congratulations to Activ Employee Hayden Wright who recently beat
fellow boxer Jason Kennedy to take home the Perth Metropolitan
Heavyweight Title.
An employee at People, Skills and Community Minbalup, Hayden is
an inspiration to Activ’s customers, with boxing fanatic Matthew Caple
one of his biggest fans. Matthew recently received one-on-one funding
to further work with Hayden to develop his passion for the sport. He
is now Hayden’s ‘boxing roadie’ and an integral part of his backroom
team.
Hayden Wright and Matthew Caple
Following the win Hayden took the championship belt in to Minbalup to show it off to the customers, much
to Matthew’s delight! “Matthew was over the moon!” he said.
Hayden used the fight as a chance to fundraise for Activ, with all money raised above and beyond his
training costs donated back to PS&C Minbalup in the form of boxing gloves, pads and skipping ropes.
Hayden is also committed to donating his time to help train customers, encouraging them to be fit and
active.
The victory has earned Hayden a chance to compete for the WA Heavyweight Title on Friday, 13 May.

NDIS Questions and Answers
Activ understands that our customers might have some questions about the NDIS. Below are some
questions and answers that we hope will be helpful. We have also included some information on the
opposite page.
Why has the Bilateral Agreement between the Commonwealth and the State not yet been signed
for WA?
The evaluation report on the NDIA / MY Way trial will be finalised during August. Christian Porter
(Federal Minister for Social Services) has said he will make a decision after he has read the final trial
evaluation report in August.
If the Bilateral Agreement on the NDIS is delayed, does this mean the NDIS may not start rolling out
in WA from the 1st July 2016 as planned?
This is a possibility. We will keep our customers updated on any news about the bilateral agreement
and roll out, and please talk to our Activ teams if you have any questions or concerns.
What happens to the people in trial areas if things are delayed?
People in trial areas will continue with their current, trial arrangements until further notice. We will keep
our customers updated on any news and please talk to our Activ teams if you have any questions or
concerns.
When do we think the NDIS roll out will happen if not on 1 July 2016?
The evaluation report on the NDIA / MY Way trial will be finalised during August. Christian Porter
(Federal Minister for Social Services) has said he will make a decision after he has read the report, so
the roll out will likely take place sometime after August 2016.
What happens if WA does something different to the rest of Australia?
The WA Minister for Disability Services is keen to see a model that allows decision making to occur at a
local level, taking into account different local conditions and situations.
This would also mean that all assessment, person centred planning and financial transactions would be
managed at the local level.
This kind of model is different to the NDIS arrangements in some other states and territories.
Will a different WA model be better or worse for people with disability, and what will happen if a
person with disability moves to another state or territory with a different model?
Until a bilateral agreement is signed it is difficult to answer these questions with complete certainty,
however it is our understanding that the issues of eligibility, quality and portability in interstate transfers
will be consistent at the national level. Activ will keep our customers updated on any news and in the
meantime, please talk to our Activ teams if you have any questions or concerns.

Where it all started
The National Model
The State Based Model
Why the two models ?
WA has been trialling two NDIS models
for people living with disability. The first
trials commenced in 2014.
The Commonwealth
Government’s NDIS trial
started in the Perth Hills on
1 July 2014.
The State Government’s WA NDIS My
Way trial started in the Lower South West
on 1 July 2014, and Cockburn and
Kwinana joined on 1 July 2015.
By trialling different models,
we can learn what works best
for people with disability, their
families and carers.

Future Rollout
What does it mean for Activ?
Which model is best?
Activ will keep you updated on NDIS
sector announcements through
Activ News and the Activ Website.
Once the model for WA is selected,
more Activ customers will begin the
transition into NDIS. The lessons
learned from the trials will help
determine the nature of the full NDIS
rollout.
The two year trial is due to end on
30 June 2016. A new agreement between
the Federal and State Governments in
2016 will provide the sector and Activ with
a clearer direction for the future.
During the trial, the two models
are being independently
evaluated. The evaluation will
help inform the final decision on
which model (or blend of the
two) will best suit WA.
What Next?
What do I need to do?
Questions?
It is important that you are prepared for
this change and understand what it
means for you. We are here to help by
working with you, and the people
important to you, to develop an
up-to-date Person Centred Plan (PCP)
that identifies your goals and the
supports you need to achieve them. Your
PCP will be used as the basis for your
NDIS plan, so we need to work together
to get them right to ensure you get the
supports you want.
If you haven’t developed your Person
Centred Plan, contact your support
worker to develop one.
Activ’s Client Services
team is here to help.
If you have a plan already, continue to
review it and make sure you’re happy
with your goals and supports.
If you are already in one of the trial
sites, keep reviewing your plan and
make sure you’re happy with it. Plans
are reviewed every 12 months so you
can make changes at the next review.
