West Africa food crisis: killer facts

Right now, 18 million people across the Sahel region of Africa
are experiencing severe food shortages. Erratic rains, poor harvests, lack of pasture and
increased food prices means families are suffering.
West Africa last experienced a major food crisis in 2010, in which ten million people were
affected. They've barely recovered and they are vulnerable.
Once again people are so hungry that they have been forced to dig up anthills to recover
grains that ants have stored.
OXFAM IS THERE
We are providing emergency food, water and sanitation. But we’re there for the long term,
strengthening people’s resilience to future crises. Across the Sahel region we are:
• Setting up cash transfers and cash for work programmes to help people earn money
to pay for food
• Providing agricultural and animal health support including vaccination, distribution of
animal food and veterinary training
• Constructing wells and rebuilding existing ones to make them more reliable
• Reaching out to people with public health promotion
YOUR DONATION WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND HELP OXFAM SAVE LIVES
$22 can help us reach out with emergency food relief
$36 can help us construct new water wells and service existing ones so people have access
to clean, safe water
