Complete the Venn diagram to show the
differences and similarities between
samples of magnetite and calcite. Have at
least five items in each section.
An image of the minerals is on today’s
WYWO sheet. Want to work with actual
samples? Come to tutoring!
Write and answer the questions after
viewing the slide show/you tube videos
about the “Cave of Crystal Giants” in
Chihuahua, Mexico.
The youtube sites addresses can be found
on today’s WYWO sheet.
Use the key to fill in the blanks on the notes sheet. Cut/paste it to page 117.

How minerals form:
Crystallization is the process where atoms are arranged
to form a material with a crystal structure. When
crystallization happens, minerals are formed.
Minerals can form through crystallization in two ways:
1. Minerals form from magma and lava.
When molten (melted) material cools down, crystallization occurs.
•Magma
Below ground
Cools slowly
larger crystals
•Lava
At/near surface
cools rapidly
smaller crystals
2. Elements or compounds that form minerals can be
dissolved in water to form a solution.
When the particles leave the solution, crystallization occurs.
Minerals can form from solutions in two ways:
•Evaporation
Water with minerals
in it evaporates,
leaving crystals of the
mineral behind.
•Hot Water Solutions
When hot water that
has minerals dissolved
in it cools down,
crystals form.
