Report of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (ANAC) to the 2013 ANA Membership Assembly Introduced By: Patrick Kenny, EdD, RN-BC, ACRN, NE-BC, APRN-PMH Secretary, Board of Directors The mission of the Association is to promote the individual and collective professional development of nurses involved in the delivery of health care to persons infected or affected by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and to promote the health and welfare of infected persons by: creating an effective network among nurses in HIV and AIDS Care. Inherent in these goals is the abiding commitment to the prevention of further HIV infection. Annual Review: ANAC published Evidence Based Practice for HIV Symptom Management guidelines. This significant publication represents nearly two years of considerable work and effort, and ANAC believes the guidelines serve to advance nursing practice and outline best practices for HIV symptom and syndrome management. ANAC commemorated its 25th anniversary at its National Conference in Tucson in November 2012 ANAC offered verbal comment at the February 2013 meeting of the President’s Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA) in support of PACHA’s resolution on HIV criminalization. In doing so, ANAC expressed support for the development and implementation of public policy that advocates for changing laws and policies that criminalize HIV and/or homosexuality. Plans for the Future: Goal 1: Widely disseminate evidence based practice guidelines for HIV symptom management Goal 2: Host a successful annual conference in Atlanta, GA in November 2013 Goal 3: Increase student membership and participating in ANAC Goal 4: Work with other nursing organizations and coalitions to advocate for APRN independent practice to facilitate expanded access for vulnerable and at risk populations. Continue to bring increased attention to the central role of nurses in the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
