The BEGi Miata Coolant Re-Route System Installation and Operations Manual Applicable to all 1989 to 2005 Mazda Miatas Revised 3-18-11 Version 1.2 1 Thank you for purchasing this system. We regard your installation as a mutual project and will be pleased to offer help at any time. We remain committed to make this a successful and enjoyable experience for all concerned. If any questions arise in the process of installation, please feel free to call BEGi for assistance. The success of this installation will be determined by a variety of factors. These instructions should be adhered to unless reasonable cause for deviation exists. The vehicle must be in excellent condition and proper tune prior to starting the installation. Care and attention to detail by the installer are of extreme importance. The daily operator of the vehicle must become familiar with, and observe all operational guidelines. It is not necessary that the installer has any previous experience with forced induction. The mechanical skills required for a successful install are roughly equivalent to that needed to properly remove and replace the exhaust header and tailpipe. If one has no mechanical experience, it is strongly suggested that help be sought from a hobbyist or professional mechanic. Clean and inspect all components of this assembly, as BEGi accepts no responsibility for cleanliness. All components will be cleaned prior to shipment, however, the cleanliness standards of the installer override all others. BEGi also does not guarantee the fit of any other manufacturers parts when used in conjunction with our systems. All components should be inventoried with respect to the packing lists. Shortages will not be honored in excess of twenty days after the shipping date. Prior to starting the installation, fill the fuel tank with gasoline of 93 octane. Do not dilute with lesser octane fuel already in the tank. it is critical to have the correct octane fuel when testing the finished installation for the absence of knock. All left or right directional references will be from the driver viewpoint. For example, the turbo mounts on the left side. If clarification of these instructions is required, please call BEGi at 830-438-2890. Suggestions for improvements of these instructions are welcome. Send an e-mail to [email protected]. Or, write notes on the instruction set and mail / fax to: BEGi, 203 Kestrel Dr., Spring Branch, Texas. 78070. Fax: 530438-8361 These instructions and the operational requirements for this system must be reviewed with the owner-driver prior to delivery of the vehicle to the end user. Please read the statement of warranty at the end of these instructions prior to starting the installation. THE INSTALLER SHOULD PASS THESE INSTRUCTIONS ON TO THE OWNER-DRIVER © C opyright BEG i 2006-2008 2 Tool and Equipment Requirements The following tools and equipment will be required to conveniently accomplish this install: General metric open/box wrenches Floor jack General SAE open/box wrenches Jack stands x 4 Assorted slot and phillips screw drivers Clean rags General metric socket set Factory shop manual or equivalent is recommended Preliminary • • • A clean engine is pleasant to work on. If needed, wash both top side and bottom very thoroughly. The high pressure car wash does a good job. Wearing latex gloves can help keep the installer as clean as a nice engine. Position the car on jack stands, high enough to work conveniently beneath the car. Drain the engine coolant. DO NOT DRAIN THE OIL. Installation of Parts Re-Routing the Heater Hose: The heater hose located on the firewall, that originally went down beneath the exhaust manifold, will be rerouted to the hose barb on the lower coolant tube. This is the hose located closest to the brake vacuum unit for left hand drive cars. Loosen the hose at the firewall and remove. Cut the hose to create a right angle segment. Place this segment back onto the tube at the firewall and secure with the original clamps. Point the end of the hose inward to the right side of the car (passenger side). Refer to picture # 1. Place the size SAE 6 hose clamp onto the end of the hose and push it upward. Insert the splice, and lower the clamp to cover the hose end and splice. Fasten securely. Refer to picture # 1. Figure # 1 Figure # 2 Place a size SAE 6 hose clamp onto the end of the 5/8" hose. Push this assembly onto the open end of the splice. Push the hose clamp up to the hose end covering the splice. Fasten securely. Refer to picture # 1. © C opyright BEG i 2006-2008 3 Route the 5/8" hose behind the engine securing it closer to the firewall with zip ties. Then turn the hose forward and run it parallel to the intake manifold. Lay the hose to the side for now. It will be installed after the coolant re-route splice. Refer to figure # 2. Figure # 3 Figure # 4 Coolant Re-Route Splice: Place the splice next to the upper radiator hose. Line it up on the straight portion of the hose. Mark the radiator hose to cut out about 7/8". Place a drain pan below the upper radiator hose. Some spillage may occur. Set the splice aside and cut the marked section on the hose with a saw blade or box cutter. Place an SAE 20 hose clamp over each end of the open hose. Insert the splice into open ends of the radiator hose. Move the clamps over to cover the ends of the splice and tighten securely. Refer to figure # 3. Locate the 5/8 Heater hose just set aside. Place a SAE 6 hose clamp over the end and push it onto the hose barb on the Coolant Re-route splice. Push the hose clamp up to cover the hose and hose barb. Tighten hose clamp. Refer to picture # 4. Protecting the Heater Hoses: Cut the 18" x 5" piece of Heat Wrap fabric into 2 long strips. Make the strips about 18" x 2.5". Cut the safety wire into about 15 pieces about 4" long. Wrap both of the heater hoses with the heat wrap fabric. Secure with cut pieces of safety wire. Refer to figure # 5. Figure # 5 © C opyright BEG i 2006-2008 Picture # 6 4 Plug the Coolant Line: The hardline for the coolant that runs under the exhaust manifold will need to be plugged. Slide the short piece of 5/8" rubber hose over the end of the hard line. Slide an SAE 8 clamp over the end and tighten. Slide the second SAE 8 hose clamp over the end of the rubber line and leave loose for now. Insert the coolant line plug into the end of the 5/8” hose. Push in all the way. Slide the clamp over the end of the plug and rubber line. Tighten the hose clamp. Refer to picture # 6. Testing Procedures • • • • Refill the engine coolant. Start the engine and check for coolant leaks. Correct as required. Drive the car a few miles prior to applying boost. If all systems are operating normally, proceed with the testing. Generally use 3rd or 4th gears to keep events at a slower pace. Apply boost in small increments at a time such that no sudden changes occur. Review the instructions and installation for any details overlooked and correct as required. General Rules of Operation • • • Check coolant levels regularly. The car will take slightly longer than before to reach operating temperature. That is normal due to the coolant re-route. It is the responsibility of the installer to review these general rules of operation with the owner/driver.
