As of: October 2016 REDD+ HIMALAYAS: DEVELOPING AND USING EXPERIENCE IN IMPLEMENTING REDD+ IN THE HIMALAYAS OBJECTIVE AND ACTIVITIES The project is cooperating closely with the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and government bodies of the four partner countries: Bhutan, India, Myanmar and Nepal. The project aims to prepare these partners in the Himalayas for results-based REDD+ approaches, and is also supporting them in the fields of ecological restoration and sustainable use of biodiverse forest ecosystems. One priority area is supporting the national REDD focal points to continue developing national REDD strategies and work plans. This is being combined with piloting REDD+ in conjunction with local forest users and indigenous groups. Cooperative agreements are being established with actors involved in the voluntary carbon market as well as other donors to fund compensation payments. The results are being translated at national level into policy recommendations and are being used to raise awareness (Communication, Education, and Public Awareness - CEPA). The results and recommendations are being fed into international negotiations in cooperation with the participating national REDD+ focal points. Capacity building measures also started in Myanmar. At the end of August, a four-day training workshop (gender issues, FPIC and safeguards) took place. In early June 2015, a kick-off workshop was held for the project’s activities in Nepal. The planned project measures in Nepal are focused on developing capacity for implementing REDD+ at subnational level. During the kick-off workshop, the terms of reference for creating a national coordination and management body for the project as well as financial issues were discussed by ICIMOD and the Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation (MFSC), which is responsible for the project. In addition, the participants agreed on the planned project activities and budget allocation issues.
