Content Objectives Tools/Materials Used Introducing the Lesson Methodology Lesson 10: DIRECTIONS Lesson Plan Suggested time: 6-7 periods (40 mins each) • How to give directions using the words left, right, ahead and behind • The four main directions and how to find them • Map • Compass To enable the students to: • give directions using the words left, right, ahead and behind • use their hands to show right and left directions • find the four main directions with the help of the rising Sun • understand the meaning and use of a map • understand the meaning and use of a compass Timeline 2, blackboard and chalk Use the Let’s begin… as a warm up to introduce the lesson. Ask the students to read the content given in the exercise. Teaching the lesson • Write the term left and right on the blackboard. • Ask a student to come in the front of the class to show his or her left hand and right hand. • Ask the class the direction in which the Sun rises. They will answer east. • Ask them the direction in which the Sun sets. They will answer west. Tell them that east and west are two main directions. • Talk to them about the other two directions north and south. On the blackboard you can draw a compass and name the four directions. • You can take the students outside the classroom and point out the four directions • Explain the use of a map and tell the class where directions are marked on a map. • Explain the utility of a compass to the class. • Ask the students to fill the information asked in the Think and answer… section. Let’s answer… The teacher will help the class in completing the exercises part A, B, C and D on page 53. Let’s do… • (E) Look at the picture carefully and answer the given questions. • (F) The students will look at the map of India and find the directions of the states given.
