The George Washington University Club Ice Hockey Team American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II—Southeast Division Atlantic Coast Collegiate Hockey League Colonials ice hockey… Join the revolution... For more information please visit: www.gwu.edu/~hockey [email protected] What is club hockey? Why club hockey at GW? While I’m sure most student-athletes in your situation dream of playing in the NCAA for a varsity program at the Division I or Division III level, it is important that you know you have other options. Running parallel to the NCAA is the ACHA, or American Collegiate Hockey Association, which is a league that has teams from 49 out of 50 states and is run by USA Hockey, which many of you played under in your youth travel team days. The teams of the ACHA are non-varsity meaning that rather than being funded fully by the school, most teams are supported by a combination of player dues, fund raising, and school funds – just like any other high school or college club you might participate in. The fact that teams are required to support themselves provides a unique opportunity to the players to fill the role of General Manager for their own team as well as play. Executive positions on teams look great on resumes, and have applications for all sorts of managerial positions like those you might find in the business, political, and public affairs worlds. More importantly, even though the league is classified as “non-varsity,” it is filled with players who have played for the same prep high schools and high-level amateur club programs as you and your teammates have played in, producing an equally high level of play (for a list of such players and schools see the back panel). The George Washington University’s ice hockey team has a number of rare distinctions that separate it from many other ACHA programs. Players on the George Washington University team are students at one of the premier universities located in our nation’s capital. People come from all over the globe to study politics, international affairs, business, engineering, and public affairs and have been known to land internships in everything from fortune 500 companies to the United States government. In fact, players on the George Washington University hockey team have had internships in the US Department of Education, on presidential campaigns, and even with the Washington Capitals of the NHL. Additionally, GW hockey players have been known to take a semester off here-and-there to study everywhere from England to Argentina to South Africa to Australia. Some players even take advantage of the robust Greek Life at GW and join fraternities. It might seem like trying to engage in the many things GW has to offer would conflict with developing a good hockey program. However, we at GW Hockey know that you come to this university to grow as an academic and a professional and so we do not kill you with time commitments. Typically, we have held one or two practices a week and had one or two games on the weekends, as well as a fundraising event or two a semester. We’ll never hold practice during your study weeks before exams, and we’ll never stick you in a holiday tournament to take up time you could be spending with your family and recharging your batteries for the next semester. We are also keenly aware what it costs to attend the George Washington University, and you can be rest assured that your team dues will be less than those of most D2 club hockey programs. All we ask is that when you show up to the rink, you’re ready to play. This philosophy has served us very well. Since 2005, GW has won three ACHA D3 conference championships and been invited to two regional tournaments, where we were one game away from playing in the national championship. In fact, GW enjoyed such success at the D3 level, that it was invited to join the Atlantic Coast Collegiate Hockey League and starting with the 2010-11 season, moved up to the D2 level against powerhouse universities such as University of Virginia, University of North Carolina, North Carolina State, Duke University, Elon University, and our cross-town rival Georgetown University. In addition to these games, we schedule against other local universities such as Catholic University and American University to minimize your non -league travel schedule. These are fun and exciting times to be a part of the George Washington University club ice hockey program, and we hope you will join us.
