Dear Parents,

ENGLISH
Our class novel will be ‘The
Orchard Book of Greek Myths’
by Geraldine Mccaughrean.
We will describe how and why
myths have been passed down
the generations and discuss
the features of myths. We
shall identify how myths can
be opened using a description
of a setting, a character, an
action or by using dialogue.
Within our stories, we will
focus on different sentence
openers, developing characters
through action and dialogue
and using stylistics devices to
create effects in writing.
Writing will be clearly
organised into paragraphs and
proof-read to be edited.
Finally, We shall read out loud
our myths to the class.
We will also be looking at
features of newspapers where
we shall focus on active and
passive voice, look at reported
and direct speech and compare
formal and informal reports.
Once we have written our own
reports, we will evaluate our
writing.
MATHS
In Maths, we shall continue to use
Mathletics both in and out of
school to build our confidence and
understanding.
We will also continue to complete
weekly times table challenges and
mental maths tests. This half
term we will be revisiting place
value, apply our knowledge to
problem solving questions and
investigations. Using information
presented in a line graph we will
solve comparison, sum and
difference problems. We fill in
gaps on the use of simple
formulae, generate and describe
linear number sequences, express
missing number problems
algebraically, find pairs of
numbers that satisfy an equation
with 2 unknowns enumerate
possibilities of combinations of 2
variables. In Geometry, we will
illustrate and name parts of
circles, including radius, diameter
and circumference and know that
the diameter is twice the radius.
SCIENCE
In Science we will be
learning about ‘Evolution
and Inheritance’. We shall
recognise that living
things have changed over
time and that fossils
provide information about
living things that
inhabited the Earth
millions of years ago. We
shall also identify that
living things produce
offspring of the same
kind, but normally
offspring vary and are not
identical to their parents.
Finally, we will identify
how animals and plants are
adapted to suit their
environment in different
ways and that adaptation
may lead to evolution.
PSHCE/British Values
With transition for Year 6 to High
school and Year 5 becoming the
oldest members of the school, we
will reflect on and celebrate our
achievements in and out of school
over the last year and for year 6;
over the last few years. We will be
given the opportunity to identify
our strengths and set high
aspirations and goals for the new
academic year. We will look at
other transitions in our live such as
loss, separation, divorce and
bereavement and look at different
ways of dealing with these
situations.
RE
In RE we are answering
the question ‘Can
Christian Aid and Islamic
Relief change the world?’
We will consider the
impact and reflect on the
importance of religion in
the world and consider
important questions of
justice and fairness,
thinking for ourselves. We
will have opportunities to
develop attitudes and
opinions of our own and to
consider key beliefs and
teachings in Islamic and
Christian traditions.
Through our study, we will
compare the two charities
and their work, looking at
sources of inspiration to
act justly for Muslims and
for Christians.
We will consider the
personal challenge to
make the world a better
place.
Our topic work this half term will be centred on the theme of
‘Ancient Greeks’.
In addition:
PE – We will have PE coaches leading our athletics sessions this half term.
ICT – In ICT we will understand computer networks including the internet; how they can
provide multiple services, such as the world-wide web; and the opportunities they offer for
communication and collaboration.
Class 5 – Flawless Five
Summer 2nd Half Term
Design and Technology – We will learn about the lifestyle and clothing of the Ancient Greek
people through research. We will design sandals out of materials available to the Ancient
Greeks knowing that the Ancient Greeks had simple resources available to them. Through
designing and planning we will consider the question: Are the sandals fit for purpose?
History – We will research the fascinating life of Alexander the Great and some of the cities
and environments he and his troops saw. We shall recreate some of the episodes in his life
through improvisation and performance.
We will look at the trading of the Ancient Greeks; work with maps that show Ancient Greece
and the countries that made up their empire; play a sorting game; discover the goods that
were traded by the Ancient Greeks; learn about the evidence for Greek trading and learn
about evidence from shipwrecks.
After we will learn about the significance of the Ancient Greece Olympics, we will research
what the Ancient Games were like, the opening ceremony, who visited and what they did;
research the Olympic flame, its origins in Olympia and journey to the host’s stadium; consider
the importance the god Zeus played in the Games and why olive leaf wreaths were given to
the winners; research the events at the original Olympic Games and compare to modern day
Olympic Games and research how the Ancient Greeks celebrated the end of the Games.
Finally, we will take part in debates to help learn about the roles and rights of free men,
women, children and slaves in Ancient Greece; study the different roles and rights of Helot
slaves and Athenian slaves and discover the history of public speaking and its origin in Ancient
Greece.
