By Jane Maiolo More than 220 years after the Battle of Fallen Timbers was fought, the battlefield site is being prepared by the Metroparks of Toledo Area for a fall opening. Originally slated to open in late August, the date was moved back to late September or early October due to the impact of the wet summer weather on construction. Dave Zenk, deputy director, noted that the weather also caused the park district to pull some of its employees off the site to handle issues such as flooding at other parks in the Lucas County system. Located at the southwest corner of I-475 and the Anthony Wayne Trail near the Fallen Timbers Mall, the 203acre battlefield is historically significant to the nation. Battle of Fallen Timbers The battle was fought on August 20, 1794. American forces under the command of General “Mad” Anthony Wayne met an alliance of 11 Native American tribes near the banks of the Maumee River. The two-hour engagement began when the Indians launched an attack against Americans, forcing them to retreat. The Americans countered with a bayonet charge, which drove the Indians from the field. While the British, except for a few volunteers, did not fight in the battle, their presence was known. Throughout the conflict, the British remained at Fort Miamis, but provided the Indians with food and weapons from a supply post in Perrysburg. Following the attack, General Wayne and his troops destroyed the post and its weapons and burned Indian villages in the area. The battle was crucial in securing the area and obtaining the Treaty of Greenville. That treaty opened Ohio and the Northwest Territories to American settlement. Historians long considered the battle to be a pivotal event in the nation’s history and Congress designated the land a national historic site in October 2000. Special Consideration The actual battlefield, discovered in 1995 by Heidelberg University archaeologist Dr. G. Michael Pratt of Perrysburg and a team of volun- PulsePoint App now available to residents of Lucas County PAID TOLEDO OH PERMIT 133 PRSRT STD US POSTAGE The Lucas County Commissioners have partnered with the PulsePoint Foundation to bring life-saving technology to the residents of Lucas County via a mobile app designed to increase citizen awareness of cardiac events and engage them in po- tentially life-saving CPR. The unique, location-aware, app alerts registered users when a sudden cardiac arrest occurs in a public place within their immediate vicinity. The commissioners encourage all Lucas County residents to download this life saving mobile app. Cardiac Arrest is one of the leading causes of death, affecting hundreds of thousands of people in the United States each year. Effective CPR administered immediately after cardiac arrest can potentially increase the victim’s chance of survival. Connected with the Lucas County Emergency 911 Dispatch Center, the PulsePoint app alerts CPR-trained bystanders when a sudden cardiac arrest occurs in a public place within a quarter-mile of their immediate vicinity. Users will be able to quickly find the victim and begin CPR immediately while waiting for EMS to arrive. The app also gives detailed instructions and locations of nearby automatic external defibrillators (AEDs). The PulsePoint app can be downloaded for free on any mobile device. Additionally there is a PulsePoint AED app, which allows the public to register locations of publicly accessible AEDs. Because of its active status, the metroparks are required to follow strict guidelines to minimize impact to the soil, explained Mr. Zenk. For example the 1.3 mile, eight-foot-wide trail that snakes through the park and tells the story of the conflict is elevated, beginning at ground level to avoid disturbing possible artifacts underground. Typically, the park district cuts a path several inches deep, fills it to ground level and raises it several inches above the surface, he said. To create the trail will require as much as 2,500 tons of stone, he added. Trees also are being planted using other methods, Mr. Zenk said. He noted that in 1794 the region was heavily forested, and the metroparks is bringing the land back to its original state. That will require planting a large number of trees on what is currently open prairie. To do so in a way that will minimize disturbing the soil, park officials are planting from seed or using a bare root method. Bare root trees are trees that are dug and stored without any soil around their roots. While there are advantages to this system including easier planting, lower cost and more root mass, it does have one major disadvantage. There is a narrower planting window of mid spring before bud break and mid-autumn after leaves fall, the deputy director explained. The two methods also can result in a reduction in the survival rate of trees by as much as 25 percent and the process required more time to complete. USE THE CLASSIFIEDS 419-874-4491 Maritime Academy Cadets training aboard U.S. Brig Niagara Ten cadets from the Maritime Academy of Toledo’s Career Tech Education (CTE) Program departed Saturday, August 8, to train and sail aboard U.S. Brig Niagara through August 21. The training is the result of a unique partnership and scholarship program between the Flagship Niagara League and the Maritime Academy. The CTE Program is an exclusive three-year education-to-work program that trains cadets to enter the maritime industry or to further their education at a maritime college after high school graduation. According to Rick Brown, director of the CTE Program, 42 cadets were part of the program during the 2014-15 school year. This is the second time Maritime Academy cadets will train on U.S. Brig Niagara. In September 2014, 10 cadets served aboard U.S. Brig Niagara for one week sailing from Erie, Pennsylvania, to Buffalo, New York. where they went through training and took part in an annual maritime festival. The Maritime Academy cadets and one teacher departed by van on Saturday, August 8, at 1 p.m., and joined U.S. Brig Niagara in Algonac, Michigan. The cadets went through ship familiarity training, emergency drills and stay aboard over the weekend. On Monday, August 10, the SITUATIONS WANTED THREE STAR quality dependable childcare, preschool. Flexible hours. Will do 3rd shift. 1 mile from Jeep in Washington Township. Donna, 419-726-2407. cadets sailed with U.S. Brig Niagara from Algonac to Put-In-Bay. They arrived in Put-InBay late Monday night after approximately 14 hours of sailing. Over the next two weeks while sailing Lake Erie, cadets will go through Seamanship Class where they will study safe line handling, parts of rig/sails, anchor watch, basic knots, splicing, sea stows/reefing, boats and various drills aboard ship. They will go through Navigation Class, and they will also have history classes which will include tours at various historical sites located in Lake Erie ports. Additionally, the cadets will participate in underway activities, watch standing, inport watch, small boat operations, cleaning and other vessel activities. “This is an incredible opportunity for our cadets,” said Mr. Brown. “There is a classroom component aboard ship that will allow our cadets to have hands-on training and become an active part of the crew. They will learn skills of traditional square-rig seamanship, terminology, physical skills, familiarity with the vessel, and the social structure of shipboard life through this experience. They will eat, sleep, work, and live with the crew on-board the ship. For these cadets who want to work in the maritime industry, they will be given an idea of what it’s like to live and work The U.S. Brig Niagara aboard ship.” The cadets will return to Toledo onboard U.S. Brig Niagara on Friday, August 21, and will spend the weekend helping out with the annual Antique Boat Show at the National Museum of the Great Lakes. In November 2014, Shawn Waskiewicz, executive director, Flagship Niagara League, and Mr. Shafer announced the new partnership between the Flagship Niagara League and the Maritime Academy. Mr. Waskiewicz presented the Maritime Academy of Toledo with a $10,000 check to help launch the Scholarship Trainee Cadet Fund for the school. “We’ve been monitoring the Maritime Academy of Toledo for some time, said William Sabatini, Captain, U.S. Brig Niagara. “The cadets who participated in the week-long program last September showed that the school and other cadets are ready for REAL ESTATE Newer subdivision, large lot, ready to build! e! m o c l e W s Harley Woods Offer rice Asking p 0 $47,5 0 Country Living with City Convenience Semi-private cul-de-sac in Tontogany, OH in Harley Call 419-215-4482 Woods Subdivision off of for more Tontogany Road.
