Interim Pastor Scott DeBlock
“For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you
a future with hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
I have begun each of my Interim Pastor’s Report with this verse from the prophet, and these words
still ring true today. For as I reflect upon the life of Brunswick Church over the past year, I have seen
wonderful glimpses of hope in this season of transitional ministry and preparation for new pastoral
leadership.
The Transition Team completed its work and submitted its report to the Session in February of this
year. And Session adopted the following Vision Statement from that report:
Our Vision is to grow as disciples who ADORE God, BELONG together in Christ, and COMMIT to
serving others.
As we seek to grow as disciples (Matthew 28:19), we define a disciple as someone who:
Adores God - by worshipping God and enjoying a growing relationship with Jesus Christ
(Matthew 22:37, Psalm 95:6-7, Acts 2:42)
Belongs - by living in Biblical community with others
(Hebrews 10:25, Acts 2:46)
Commits - by engaging in ministry and service, locally and globally
(1 Peter 4:10, Acts 2:37).
This report then will look at the events of the past year through the lens of this Vision Statement.
ADORE GOD
Some of the ways we have focused on Adoring God in worship in the past year include:
Continuing our Thursday evening worship and our Sunday morning schedule at 8:30 and 11:00
and re-forming our Growing Community Time for Bible Study and small groups of all ages.
 Welcoming Jeff Seckinger as our Coordinator of Music and AV Ministries.
 Had wonderful unified Pentecost and Consecration Sunday services.
 Were led in worship by our Youth in Surrender Worship on Easter morning and other times
throughout the year.

BELONG TOGETHER
We grow in Christ as we belong together in him in building community. Some ways we do that are
highlighted:


Our AWANA and youth group programs on Wednesday night continue to thrive.
Ongoing shared leadership of the ministry and mission areas of the congregation by its members
and friends and encouraging the entire congregation to use their spiritual gifts as servant
leaders.
5
Assigning Elders and Deacons to care networks utilizing our Parish Groups, enhancing care and
communication.
 Continued small group activities and Bible Studies on campus and in our Parish Group.

COMMIT TO SERVE
Some ways we commit to serve in Ministry and Mission include:






As per the recommendations of the Transition Team report, we are currently in process of
forming a new Communications Team, Stewardship Team, and re-forming and re-framing the
Missions Team.
Our giving of our financial resources continues to increase, and our Resource Management Team
and Buildings and Grounds Team continue to do good work in financial and property oversight.
The Food Pantry continues to serve and is expanding its backpack program into another school
system.
The Deacons continued their good work of projects throughout the year, from Thanksgiving
baskets to Christmas gifts to caring for the ailing and bereaved of this congregation.
We welcomed Stan Slamet as our new Treasurer, and Bob Schmidt as our new Controller.
Our TLC Executive Board continues to offer great leadership. Through increased oversight, there
was again a net profit for 2016 and a projected net profit for 2017 as well.
And now, again with great anticipation we look forward to the events of the coming year. The
Pastoral Nominating Committee has worked tirelessly over this past year, and as I write this report,
we are preparing for Candidating Sunday on January 22. By God’s grace, this candidate will begin
to serve as your Senior Pastor in March of 2017.
Yet we all must remember that while this time of transition comes to a close, the ministry and
mission and the things we have learned about ourselves as a congregation continues! You are all
servant leaders; all of you are the congregation that is called Brunswick Presbyterian Church.
Continue the journey of moving forward and outward in faith as you reach out to the world with
the Good News of Jesus Christ.
I am truly grateful for the opportunity to serve you over the past two years. I am amazed by your
gifts for ministry, I am grateful for your patience with me in this unchartered territory of transitional
ministry, and I will be forever thankful for the loving and dedicated church staff.
As my time here as interim pastor comes to its conclusion, please know that I have been blessed by
God with the opportunity to serve you and come alongside you for awhile. Yes indeed, I know that
by grace and through faith, God’s plans for this congregation are absolutely amazing!
Joy and Peace,
Scott DeBlock

Pastor (Temporary Supply)
Elizabeth Shen O’Connor
Faith is a journey of discovery. A pilgrimage. As Barrie Shepherd writes: “A treasure hunt…rich
with anticipation and potential, blessed every now and then with moments of vision, satisfaction,
and joy, and continually guided by the Spirit who searches all things, the deep and fertile things of
God, and reveals to us there, the presence, the glory, and the grace of the Divine.” What a year to be
sojourners, to be pilgrims, to be treasure hunters! While the destination is not always clear, still here
we are on the brink of new vistas in our ministry and church life.
This year has been, for me, one of keeping pace with the Spirit. We have ventured into new ministry
territory and continued to work out how God is calling us to order ourselves and grow ourselves so
that we might live to the fullest of our God-given potential – as individuals and as the body of
Christ.
Midway through the year I picked up worship planning responsibilities as part of my staff
oversight. We welcomed new staff person Jeff Seckinger, Music and A/V Coordinator, with whom
I’ve had the privilege of working this autumn. I’m excited to see how God will use him as he
encourages, equips, and coordinates the music ministries of the church. Upcoming in worship
ministries, we look to continue to build on the strengths of so many talented and gifted volunteers
who glorify God in all aspects of our worship ministries.
Care, connection, and communication have been watchwords for me in my oversight of spiritual care
and leadership development this year. I am more and more convinced that the clarity of our
ministry depends upon our capacity to relate to others in genuine and meaningful ways. To that
end, we completed the first year of re-organizing deacons into caring teams and elders into
shepherding teams. Those active in the congregation now have a team of elders and deacons
assigned to them based upon the geographic area in which they live. Throughout the year, we
discussed and studied the role of the deacon and the elder within the church to better understand
these particular callings and how to live them out to their full potential. In 2017, I will continue to
equip and encourage officers, along with other leaders of the church. I also hope to plan more
leadership gatherings so that we can organize and strategize together how best to serve those under
our care.
As we look to welcoming a new Senior Pastor/Head of Staff, I commend all of us to be seeking Jesus
Christ, the Head of the Church. What path is he inviting us to discover? What pace is he urging us
to keep? All the while, let us eagerly anticipate those moments of vision and satisfaction and joy that
are promised and to come.
In Christ,
Elizabeth Shen O’Connor (aka ESO)

Caring Ministries
The many caring ministries of Brunswick Church seek to witness to the love of God in Jesus Christ
through acts of compassion and service. While every disciple is called to care for one another and
their neighbors, these ministries provide an organized way of doing so within the church and
community. The following reports highlight the work of the Board of Deacons, the Pastoral Care
Team, the Deacon Development Team, and the prayer ministry.
The Board of Deacons provides care for people in crisis or need. Deacons do so by organizing
numerous service projects, coordinating congregational resources, and addressing congregational
and community needs that arise.
The following are just some examples of the ministry accomplished in 2016:






The BLT (Brunswick Loving Touch) Ministry continued with our “over 80” members receiving
bread loaves during the Thanksgiving holiday and the Spring/Fall Luncheons (sixty-five or
older)
We supported the mailing of boxes filled with “goodies” to our college freshmen in early
December
Through the Backpack Ministry 258 backpacks were filled and distributed to local schools, as
well as children in need in our church and pantry community
The Deacons coordinated delivering meals to families in need due to illness or other personal
circumstances and, also, lent support to several funeral receptions
Our Thanksgiving ministry fed over 700 people from three different agencies, including those in
our congregation and Brunswick Cares Food Pantry
Our Christmas Tree Tag project supplied over 200 gifts to children from surrounding schools
and the community, as well as individuals in need from our own congregation.
Many families were touched this year by the generosity and commitment of this congregation to
these worthwhile projects the deacons facilitate.
For 2017, the deacons will continue to engage in most of the ministries we have fulfilled in the past
while looking for new opportunities to serve. Our main focus this year will be: caring for people in
crisis by coordinating congregational resources, helping to build relationship and connect people
within the congregation, reminding the congregation of caring ministries, special projects, and
congregational visitation. Through continued training, we also hope to deepen our ability to care for
the spiritual needs of those in the congregation and beyond. There is no shortage of need, be it
spiritual or material in nature.
We appreciate the faith and trust this congregation shows in us as you continue to fund all the
different ministries. Those contributions allow us to share our gifts and yours with others who are
not as fortunate, to spread the word of Jesus and to serve our community and our Lord with a
generous and loving spirit. We hope to represent Brunswick Church well in the community and
around the world.
Respectfully submitted on behalf of all serving deacons,
Lois Asher and Vic Spairana (Co-moderators)

The Pastoral Care Team (PCT) endeavors to show God’s love by coordinating solutions to individual needs while supporting the work of several ministry teams. The teams encompassed within the
PCT include the Needs Assessment Team, Career Management, Parish Nurse Ministry, Aunt Bea’s
Exchange, and the Transportation Ministry. The PCT also collaborates with the deacons to support
the overall spiritual care and support ministry of the church by focusing on needs assessment and
addressing chronic or specialized needs.
In addition to our ongoing ministries, in 2016 we continued to provide support and training for
newly serving deacons. We collaborated with the Deacon Executive Team to implement a plan developed in 2015 for parish-based caring networks, with the goal of helping the deacons be more effective in their caring ministry in 2016 and beyond. Once this plan was implemented we participated in periodic feedback reviews and evaluations to insure a smooth, successful transition. We also
continued to reach out to those on the margins of our community – those in tenuous relationship
with the church for various reasons. We connected with these people through cards, phone calls,
and visits in the hopes that they would know the love of the church.
For 2017, we plan to continue our ongoing ministries, the collaborative work on the DDT, spiritual
care training, and the outreach begun with those in our community who need encouragement in
their connection to the church.
Financial Report: The Pastoral Care Team does not have a budget line on the general budget. Any
funds that we have are given by individuals and “designated” to the PCT. This year we had an
opening balance of $1,546.33, no expenditures, designated giving of $375.00 and ended the year with
a balance of $1,921.33.
Serving humbly and gratefully in God’s service,
The Pastoral Care Team – Larry Broderick (Chair), Susan Lascari, Elizabeth Shen O’Connor, Liz
Reynolds, Gail Swota, and Connie Vooys
The Deacon Development Team (DDT) combines the experiences and strengths of the Deacon Executive Team and Pastoral Care Team to better equip the Board of Deacons as they care for this congregation and those within our community. In 2016, the DDT helped to implement and review the
rollout of geographically based caring networks for the Board of Deacons. This rollout was the fruit
of several years of planning by the DDT. As we evaluate the effectiveness of this model of ministry,
the DDT will continue to seek ways to enhance the work of the Board and the greater caring ministries of Brunswick Church.
The Prayer Ministry at Brunswick Church is a vital part of our fellowship and faith. Our vision is
that everyone within our church knows the prayer resources available to them and is encouraged to
offer prayer to those in the church and in the wider community as a form of outreach. Organized
prayer happens on a number of fronts. Prayer shawls are available to those in need of a loving
touch. Also, should you have a particular concern and desire prayer, you can:
·
·
·
Request prayer in worship
o through prayer cards located in seatbacks and at the prayer kiosk (indicating your confidentiality preference: pastors and staff, prayer chain, community wide via the
prayerlist);
o during blessings and concerns Thursday 7pm and Sunday 11am;
Email the prayer chain ([email protected]);

The Pastoral Nominating Committee
The Pastoral Nominating Committee (PNC) began its work in February 2016. We had an initial
meeting with some representatives from the Albany Presbytery to learn the process and steps to
selecting a new Pastor. We also got to know each other as several of us have not had much
interaction with each other in the past.
The PNC began working on the Ministry Information Form (MIF). The MIF lets potential candidates
know who Brunswick is and what we are looking for in a Pastor. After the PNC completed the MIF,
we presented the document to Session and the Albany Presbytery Committee on Ministry (COM) for
approval. After the PNC received the approval from Session and COM, the MIF was uploaded to the
Presbyterian Church Leadership Connection (CLC) database. The CLC database matches MIFs with
Personal Information Forms (PIFs). A PIF is filled out by a pastor and is uploaded to the CLC. The
Brunswick MIF matched with over 60 pastors and we also received several self-referrals from
pastors.
The PNC began to review, discuss and discern the PIFs for several months. During this process, we
also searched online for personal information on Pastors and tried to find sermons we could watch
and listen. After this long process, we narrowed the list of potential Pastors down to ten. At this
time, we began to contact these 10 candidates to advise them we were showing interest in them. We
received several positive responses but also had some candidates withdraw due to various reasons.
After more discussion, discernment, and prayer, the list of candidates narrowed down to five. The
PNC then set up Skype interviews with the remaining candidates. From these interviews, the PNC
was able to narrow the list of candidates to four. Then, we began to make reference calls and passed
the names on to Presbytery, so they could make reference calls to the Presbytery of each candidate.
After all of the calls were made, the PNC once again engaged in discussion, discernment and prayer,
and the outcome was to bring in two candidates for in-person interviews and to watch them preach
at a neutral pulpit.
After the PNC spent time with both candidates, we entered into a time of personal prayer. Prayer
has always been at the center of our decisions, and became more apparent when we had the difficult
choice between two very good candidates. After praying individually, and as a group, we had
further discussion and were able to make a decision and extend a call.

Music & Audio/Visual Ministries
As the new guy on the block…still getting a hold on where God would like concentration
concerning the aspects of Music & AV. We have had some discussion / brain-storm sessions of what
‘needs’ exist from ordering supplies, updating equipment to training for A/V and which direction
the music portion of BC may be directed.



BC has a myriad of choirs from men & women individual and mixed choirs, young adult
& children’s choir to special choirs during ‘high church’ calendar…most rehearse on Wed.
evenings and sing on Sunday (11:00am)
Instrumental ensembles include Worship Band, rehearses Tues. evenings and participate
at the (08:30am Sunday); an all-inclusive brass, woodwinds, strings & percussion group
that participates once a month at the (11:00am); ‘Surrender’, a youth worship ensemble
that rehearses Sunday afternoon and participates in worship services a few times a year
A/V techs are a vast group of volunteers who are trained to run the sound board /
projection software (computer) for each service and as needed at special services
(weddings, funerals); there is always a need to add more to the ranks for this portion as
we are ever growing with opportunities at BC
Meeting with the leadership of each segment has been the first order of business and as
conversations have concluded, observations were similar; dedication, commitment and loyalty are a
continuous theme throughout. All those involved in music or A/V enjoy and have a desire to
participate, making the ministry an exciting place to be a part.
Now with a new year and the forward look to new pastoral leadership, WE (Music/AV) hope to
have more participants, volunteers join the ranks of this ministry. PLEASE do not hesitate to reach
out and inquire…WE will find a place for you to serve…whether music, A/V or wherever God may
lead! We would love to have you…

Visual Environment Team
“...So God created man in His own image.” Gen 2:27
How divine to be created in the image of THE Creator of all.
2016 was an exciting year for the Visual Environment Team. We continued the theme of trees
through the beginning of the year, as we saw them dripping with ice.
Through Lent, we worked to bring a somber presence to our worship space with the use of natural
products, stones, branches, sand, and candles. All leading up to a glorious Easter celebration!
Vacation Bible School (VBS) took us on a caving adventure, and thanks to Lynne Ware, we were
swarmed with BATS! Some of our youngest folks helped by painting paper mâché rocks and setting
the stage for a great week of fun and learning.
October found Kathleen Claydon and Colleen Lais road-tripping to SALT Nashville 2016, a visual
arts conference held in Hendersonville, Tennessee, just outside Nashville. We took classes in setdesign, iconography, team building and one very amazing class on how to curate worship. This was
our last trip to SALT as such, since in 2017, the conference is planning to go on the road around the
country. It was an amazing time with some very creative folks.
Through the year, we hosted the Creation Art Show. We had quite a few wonderful original works
of art on display.
Christmas came with a rain of stars. We hope that we were able to inspire you during the holiday
season.
We continue to work with the Thursday night worship community to bring a unique visual
perspective to evening worship, which has its own joys and challenges.
On to 2017, we are working hand-in-hand with the team who is writing and producing our very
own VBS program. It is proving to be challenging and exciting. As we come into the new year, we
are looking for ways to enhance worship for all of our community. The art and “decorations” are
there to help bring us into worship, into a deeper communion with God.
If there is anything you would like to see done, or if you would like to help with this work, please
do not hesitate to contact me. ALL HANDS ARE WELCOME!
Looking forward to 2017 and all it holds,
Kathleen Claydon for the Visual Environment Team

Nurture Ministry
The Nurture Ministries of Brunswick Church exist to help all say “Yes” to Jesus. Whether it is the
first initial “Yes” to following Jesus for the first time, or a “Yes” to discovering who Jesus is, or
“Yes” for the three-thousandth time when Jesus calls, we look to help people of all ages and
circumstances say “Yes” to whatever Jesus is calling them into.
This year in Children’s Ministry, we saw kids say “Yes” to Jesus as they learned about his life in
Xtreme worship and put some of their learning into action. As they have learned about worship and
what it means, they have learned how to lead us in worship once-a-month with Kidz Choir.
Children have been learning to serve by being ushers in worship, making sunshine envelopes for
our shut-ins, and learning to serve by asking how they can help with a myriad of things around the
church. As well, our AWANA ministry has continued by doing quarterly missions nights (Caroling,
Operation Christmas Child boxes, Food Pantry, etc.). We are seeing new families come to our
Children’s Ministry through AWANA, as well as training-up new adults to lead children. We also
had a successful all-volunteer led VBS this year, where we served around 150 children.
In Youth Ministry, the youth are learning what it means to say “Yes” to Jesus in their everyday life.
They are learning about reflecting him in the decisions they make and the way they go about their
daily life. Several are saying “Yes” to Jesus by regularly reading his word and inviting friends to
Youth Group, church, or their Youth for Christ Bible Studies. We brought five people with us to
either Break Out or Excel, who are not attenders of Brunswick Church, because a friend wanted
them to come. And, we had a successful confirmation class where youth worked with mentors to
learn who Jesus is, what impact their faith has on them, and where Jesus is calling them to serve at
Brunswick. We did this confirmation class in conjunction with Gateway, and it turned out great!
Our Sunday 10:00am Nurture Hour for youth is thriving as they engage in Scripture Union’s
Essential 100 series. We have a diligent group of three dedicated teachers, but are always open to
more folks joining us.
In Adult Ministry, our parish groups are continuing to find their footing. We have regular groups in
the Troy and West Sand Lake parishes. We are always looking to establish more so more people can
be in community as they seek out Jesus and say “Yes” to his calling. Our campus groups are quite
established and there is usually some study group happening every night of the week except Friday
and Saturday.
On the horizon for Nurture Ministries is establishing more adult groups. We would love to see more
adults in groups that help them say “Yes” to Jesus. With busy schedules as they are, groups that in
other areas of the Capital District may help us to meet more people, and help people find more time
in their schedules. We are also undergoing a new project. We have a significant team of people
saying “Yes” to Jesus by writing our own VBS material this year. This includes stories, snacks, crafts,
missions project, visuals, and all. It started out as something I have found a bit scary, but am now
really excited as it takes form. There are many new opportunities ahead, and we are looking to say
“Yes” to Jesus in the way we serve, the way we reach out, and the way we minister to those around
us. Saying “Yes” to Jesus is always the way to go!
Humbly submitted,
Niki Campbell

Missions Team
The vision of the Missions Team is to encourage the Brunswick Church community in its
relationships with individuals and agencies who are sharing Jesus’ love in communities locally,
regionally, nationally, and internationally. We do this by:



Casting vision for missions among the Brunswick Church community
Facilitating relationship between missions partners and the congregation
Preparing and administering the Brunswick Church missions budget
This year the Missions Team has helped facilitate:





Communication with missions partners
Several missions partner visits to our congregation
$73,800.00 in financial support to missions partners and initiatives from our congregation
Encouraging individuals in the congregation to participate in local and global missions
Praying for our missions partners, and for discernment in how we may serve and
encourage them
Our missions partners work in a variety of settings, including evangelism/church planting, health
care, support of material needs (food, clothing, shelter), pastoral ministry, Bible translation, teaching,
and administration. Thanks to your consistent and generous giving, we were able to meet our
missions partner commitments in a timely manner this year! In addition, several in our congregation
received support for group or individual missions, and we were able to provide a few of our
missions partners with much-needed additional funds to finish out the year.
We are thankful for these many opportunities, and our hope for the coming year is to continue to
improve communication, strengthen relationships, and inspire our community to consider Jesus’ call
to make disciples by sharing His love in our neighborhoods, workplaces, and around the world.
Respectfully submitted,
Shellie Ware, on behalf of the Missions Team

The Resource Management Team
The mission of the Resource Management Team (RMT) is to ensure the faithful management of the
resources that God has entrusted to our congregation, to assist other ministry teams in their financial
planning and to promote a culture of generosity in our church community.
2016 has been a year of God’s blessing in so many ways! With Lynn Brown’s departure for a pastoral
assignment, SDT hired our new part-time controller, Bob Schmidt, and the session appointed
Stanley Slamet as our church’s treasurer in March. Both individuals have great financial knowledge
and skill, and have brought significant improvements to how we handle our resources. In preparing
for this change in positions, SDT created a detailed plan of ‘checks and balances’ between the
positions, with input from RMT, to ensure the integrity of our financial processes.
During this year we saw the fruit of our first consecrated stewards season (begun in November
2015); we were blessed to see so many in our congregation committing themselves to serve Christ
and give generously. By year-end, all missions’ obligations had been paid (a first for us in many
years) and our expenses were met.
The church also received a substantial bequest from a former member, Mabel Leadley. Her gift
enabled the B&G team to complete a number of maintenance and improvement projects this year
that have been a blessing to all of us. Also, thanks to the generosity of many church members and
friends of Brunswick, we have just over $200,000 invested in PILP (our denomination’s foundation
which holds our church mortgage); as long as investments remain above that amount, our loan
interest rate is reduced by 1%, saving us thousands of dollars a year!
The church is fortunate to have a gifted group of people who serve on RMT: Bob Clarke (TLC
Treasurer), Barbara Darling, Marilyn Sirco, Vince Stallone, Jim Tusty, Kevin Ware and Betty
Wetmiller. At RMT meetings Bob Schmidt and Stanley Slamet have been actively involved assisting
our team, as well as Pastor Scott DeBlock. Great care was exercised to examine our vendor contracts
and find ways to reduce expenses. Much of what RMT does – auditing the church books, developing
financial policies for session approval, reviewing vendor proposals – is unseen, but it enables things
to run well.
Staff, RMT and your elders have carefully reviewed the 2017 budget you will find in this report. We
believe that the budget will guide and support our church’s ministries in 2017, especially as we
anticipate our new senior pastor joining us in early 2017. Like you, RMT is excited to see how the
Lord will provide for our spiritual growth and outward ministry in the year ahead!
As you look over the annual report please realize this –the ministries we do at Brunswick cannot
happen without your generous giving – of your time, your spiritual gifts and your financial support.
May God bless you in 2017 as you continue to serve Christ and His church!
Respectfully submitted,
Bill Henderson, RMT Chair

Facility Management /Building & Grounds
Our goal is to “provide a safe, secure, and attractive facility for our congregation and the community”
To say this year has been exciting, satisfying and challenging, would all be understating the activity
of the Building & Grounds committee along with the Facility Manager in 2016. We experienced our
usual routine problems during the entire year, including but not limited to: Plumbing, boiler and
heating system, plugged toilets (many), plugged waste pipe, and preparation of annual contracts
for: Snow removal, grass cutting, fire sprinkler system, kitchen fire suppression, fire detection
system, propane fuel, water sampling, H/V rooftop units, etc.
We completed a 3-year capital improvement plan, not including those projects completed in 2016,
which include the following:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
Parking lot lighting Upgrade
Recoat and restripe all parking lots
New propane furnace in the Sanctuary
New propane boiler in the Stevens House
Updated the Fire Detection System to be one addressable system for all our buildings
Removed the pigeon environmental problem in the Sanctuary steeple
Added a solid state controller for fire notice to bypass telephone line
Replaced our custodial supplier, which will provide a better product at lower prices.
Replaced all burned out and remaining incandescent floodlights in Worship Center and
Commons with dimmable LED.s
10. Completed a fresh coat of paint on all baseboard trim in the Worship Center and
Commons
11. Investigated repairs of the steeple and repainting outside of Sanctuary. That investigation
and possible solutions is a continuing project.
It is important for the congregation to know that our goal of a safe, secure, attractive and clean
facility can only be achieved thru hours of hard work. The Building & Grounds committee
consisting of Marty Hoyt. Will Asher, Rich Scott, John Story, Larry Broderick, Bernie Fredette. Tim
Maki, Niki Campbell, and Dave Boyles (Chair), play a key role along with our dedicated custodial
staff, Barry Barker, Connie McCullen and Tim Maki and numerous volunteers from the
congregation who need to be recognized for their service to our Lord and to Brunswick Church.

Dave Boyles, Chair of Buildings & Grounds

The Staff Development Team
The Staff Development team seeks to serve Brunswick Church by:





Ensuring that the paid staff positions are comprehensively defined to fit together as a
leadership team.
Ensuring that those chosen are according to the appropriate hiring process as defined by
the Presbyterian Church USA, Brunswick Church leadership, and state and federal
employment regulations.
Seeking God’s will in defining, filling and maintaining paid staff positions.
Recommending appropriate Staff compensation and benefits to Session.
Supporting the Staff in fulfilling their roles, being available to respond to joys and
concerns, and assisting in the resolution of personnel-related issues
2017 was a very full year for the staff development team. We had the pleasure of seeing God build
up and prepare Brunswick for a future of reaching out as we collaborated with staff, pastors, other
teams and Session on a variety of behind-the-scenes and visible efforts.
In January, we celebrated and honored all those who use their gifts and talents to enable us to
conduct the scope of ministry that happens here. Folks serving in a variety of ways – childcare,
children’s ministries, music and AV support, cleaning our building, teaching and leading bible
studies, fiscal management, food pantry, snow shoveling, extending care and concern through visits
and cards, and many, many more.
At the end of May we celebrated the excellent work that Lynn Brown had done among us as our
Interim Business Manager along with Betty Wetmiller and Bob Clarke volunteering as co-treasurers.
Working with the Resource Management Team and Session we moved to a new model of financial
accountability with Bob Schmitt joining staff as the newly described Controller and Stanly Slamet
volunteering as treasurer.
Together with a cross-section of volunteers from worship and music ministries we worked to define
a new part-time Music and A/V Coordinator position. In October we were excited to hire Jeff
Seckinger into that position.
We also worked with the Resource Management Team, Session and the TLC Daycare Executive
Board to clarify Brunswick Church’s employee policies. This work continues the good work of
many, over the last few years, to hold our fiscal and management policies to higher standards. These
efforts continue to provide a stable platform for the mission of Brunswick Church.
As we look forward to a new pastor joining us this year please continue to look for ways to support
our staff. The Brunswick Church staff has continued to work tirelessly through this interim period.
Several of them continue to carry more than their share and/or work well outside their job
descriptions. We look forward to being able to help clarify their roles in the coming year. We all
have much to learn as we continue to move toward more reliance on volunteers. Be sure to look for
opportunities to go deeper, to use your gifts among us to help build up our church family as we all
seek to reach out with the good news to the community around us.
Excited to see what’s next,
Tom Kiehl for the Staff Development Team (Dave Borland, Alison Brinkman, Christina Croll, Tom
Kiehl, Lori Maki & Jan Means)

Office Ministry
2016 has been a challenging year for the office staff, paid and volunteer alike. We have moved away
from a staff-led leadership style, to one of inclusion and support of volunteer-directed ministries.
While the merit of this model is evident, getting from point A to point B hasn’t always been easy. It’s
been a master class in humility. I’ve had to recognize the value in relinquishing control of some
things once under my umbrella, and to support ministries in new ways. We’ve always joked that if
you work in the office you have 400 bosses. There were times during 2016 that it truly seemed to be
our reality. The upside of this environment, is that I had a front row seat to the ways God has been
working in our ministries. I’ve seen people step into leadership who once sat quietly in the back
row. I’ve seen welcome new faces among the ranks of elder and deacon. I’ve seen a build-up of
leadership strength in children’s, youth, and adult nurture ministries. The Bible is being studied and
people are leaning on God’s Word as we all walk through this transition. So in the challenges, God
has provided. I’m thankful that I get to sit where I sit.
There is a great group of volunteers who work regularly with me in the office. Elizabeth and Roy
Krasse fold and stuff the weekly worship guides. Dave Ware covers the office during our staff
meeting and makes sure that children in worship have activity bags available each week. Lynne
Ware, when not here to work on the visuals with her partner-in-crime, Kathleen Claydon, will work
with Dave on the occasional mailer. Barbara Ritschel brightens the office when she works the phone
on behalf of the International Student Picnic or the Thanksgiving Baskets. That is definitely God’s
work when she makes those calls for support...I dare you to say “no” when she calls for donations!
Barbara also helps me by editing large print projects such as this Annual Report. Then there is
Donna Britton. Donna Britton and I have worked together to maintain a welcoming and neat office.
Donna’s organizational skills have been a blessing. Donna also helps us acknowledge the memorial
gifts received when one of our saints goes to be with the Lord. These folks, and many others who
help out here and there as the need arises, are instrumental in my ability to juggle all the balls that a
church office manager has to keep in the air. I am very grateful for their service.
There is another volunteer who has been exceptional in moving the office forward with regard to
our church database. Bob Clarke, busier in retirement then when he was working, spends time each
week updating and researching ACS—our database program. He has worked with Pastor Elizabeth
and the deacons to provide accurate and vital contact information, so that they may best serve the
congregation pastorally. Bob has supported me by researching and then tutoring me on the most
efficient ways to pull labels for mailers or reports for meetings. We have trudged together through
that which is online giving sign-up. Due to Bob’s hard work and support, we are better able to
leverage the information in our database to serve in the best way possible. It is a work in progress,
and I look forward to continuing to learn from Bob.
As this report goes to print (Sorry Ken Bonesteel) to copy, I am planning a mailer regarding the
Pastoral Candidate and expect to support a new pastor sometime this spring. Hey, everyone needs a
stapler, and when it comes to that kind of thing, I’m the one to see!
May we continue to work together to forward the Kingdom of Jesus Christ,
Humbly,
Colleen Lais

Tender Loving Day Care (TLC)
It is my pleasure to give a report on Tender Loving Day Care (TLC), as we enter a new year. TLC
registration is up again from last year at this time. TLC’s Infant Room is full every day. As for the
Toddler Room, we have two full-time spots. In the Preschool Room, we have no full-time openings,
as children will start transitioning from the Toddler Room into Preschool. TLC has a great group of
families.
Staff: TLC’s staff has changed a bit over the last year. We are currently looking for an infant room
teacher. Carly is the Infants room assistant. Amber is the Toddler teacher, and Randon is the
Toddler Room assistant. Kelsey and Mallory make up the Preschool staff.
Finances: I believe we are doing well. We work with Controller Bob Schmidt, and Bob Clarke, as
well as the TLC Executive Committee to create and honor an annual budget for the center.
Board: The TLC Executive Committee is up and running. The members include Jen Brock, Tia
Wager, Barbara Klein, Marty Hoyt, and Bob Clarke. We are so thankful for their ministry with
TLC.
I have enjoyed another year as Director and I am looking forward to another great, growing year.
TLC looks forward to participating in the early Christmas Eve service and other mission projects
with the Brunswick Church. TLC also enjoys our yearly participation in Vacation Bible School
(VBS).
I have some long range goals for TLC for the upcoming year, which include some building and
playground improvements.
If any one has anything that they would like to ask or want more information, please feel free to
contact me at [email protected] or call 279-1140, Monday through Friday 7:30am-3:30pm.
Sincerely,
Valerie L. McMahon, Director

Clerk of Session
Annual Report - December 31, 2016
In 2016, Session had an inspiring and fulfilling year of ministry. Scott DeBlock, our interim pastor,
continued to moderate session during this transition period. Session had 11 official monthly
meetings, 2 special session meetings and no unofficial meetings. The church had its annual
congregational meeting in January and a congregational meeting in December to elect officers for
2017.
During the course of the year, session accepted eight (8) candidates for membership. In addition,
four (4) baptisms were approved. The church also noted the passing of members: Beverly Cook,
Joyce Foster, Dorothy Peppin and Marian Schoonmaker and non-members: George Casavant, Tina
Heintz, Joseph Killeen, Calla Osborne, Stephen Reynolds, Cherie Watson and Rev. Wendel Williams.
Session is looking forward to the New Year as our church continues in its ministry and is eagerly
anticipating the arrival of a new senior pastor. Session is always striving to do our best as God’s
ministers and to serve the Church of Jesus Christ in Brunswick and around the world. Session is
grateful and thankful to Scott and Elizabeth for their dedication and care that they gave to our
congregation during 2016.
Respectfully submitted,
David B. Oster
