CONGRATULATIONS to the 10 residents who participated in the
11th Annual Valentine’s Day Poetry Contest!
We are happy to publish all of the poems for your enjoyment.
GRAND CHAMPION– Walter L.
Afterglow & Pre-Dawn Light
You’re there sometimes in easeful dreams
And I recall how real it seems.
Your comfort, warmth, so dear to me,
Enfold the joys that used to be.
You’ve always been for me God’s boon.
And soon, my love…I’ll see you soon.
SECOND PLACE – Frank B.
Valentine.
I have a sweetheart named Mia
My granddaughter makes me happy
when I see her
She makes me smile, as she grows and grows
Studies hard and likes to sew(s)
No prissy missy in this generation
A sports player enjoying the elation.
Only nine, but she already gives the sign
When she grows up, it will be her time!

THIRD PLACE – Patricia J.
“Sentimental?
Just a touch
Because I like you
Very much.”
Those are the words on a
Valentine’s Day card from
The man who would become
My husband for sixty four years
I was not impressed by the card,
And read it aloud to my family at dinner that
night.
I wasn’t at all sentimental but, four years later
We were married.
Signed with my nick name, Mitzi G.
Ode to Fred- My Valentine
Of all the guys I ever knew
For me, there was only one—t’was you
With your bright blue eyes and a heart so true
You were my sweetheart, through and through
You were blessed with quite a wit
Quick and sharp, and naughty- a bit
Your poetry was so profound
And you were Mr. Fix-It, all ‘round
Our kids and grandkids remind me of you
How fortunate for me that they do
I’ll raise some wine and drink to this—
And seal it with a loving kiss.
You were blessed with quite a wit
Quick and sharp, and naughty- a bit
Your poetry was so profound
And you were Mr. Fix-It, all ‘round
Our kids and grandkids remind me of you
How fortunate for me that they do
I’ll raise some wine and drink to this—
And seal it with a loving kiss.

Remembering
Oh, my darling,
Help me remember
The days of our passion,
The eager clutching,
In bed and near the fireplace.
Mornings we parted
Like matched magnets torn apart.
In the evenings you playfully
Turned off the stove.
We had drinks
Afterwards to cool off and then at dinner,
feeding each other.
Now, as our eyes meet, we smile,
Remembering.

TUESDAY, MARCH 7, at 2:00pm
Formed in 2012 as an international touring ensemble, the Zurich
Beethoven Trio has delighted audiences in Switzerland and the
United States with its presentation of classical and contemporary
repertoire. Blending the reedy voice of the clarinet with the rich depth
of the cello and the wide range of the piano, this trio features Swiss
clarinettist Lux Brahn, virtuoso cellist James Jaffe, and American
pianist Ian Scarfe. Their 2017 tours will include 12 concerts across
California and 6 more in Switzerland. The trio always takes time
during performances to talk to audiences about the music, the
composers, and things to listen for in each work, creating
a personable and intimate atmosphere.
Concert Program:
"Beethoven and the Italians"
The program will feature Beethoven's Trio Op. 11 - a work that shows the lighter
and more humorous side of the composer. Imitating the style of Italian "opera
buffa", this work plays out as a comedy between the clarinet, cello, and piano,
with the finale a variation on an Italian opera aria. Beethoven shows that he can
write lyrical, upbeat, and comedic music! The program will also feature music by
Italian composer Nino Rota, who wrote the famous score for the "Godfather"
films, and works by Gioacchino Rossini and Franz Schubert.

We will attend a concert outing to see the California Pops
Orchestra on Sunday, April 2. The concert is entitled, “Gold
Standards”. Whether you call it a song from the Great American

lyrics you sing with a smile as
you’re driving… the tune that
happy couples call “our song.”
These are the melodies that stand
the test of time to inspire, amuse,
comfort and thrill generations of
audiences! Come hear the California Pops perform some of the
greatest popular songs — the gold
standards — by Irving Berlin,
George and Ira Gershwin, Cole

The American by Henry James
A novel that every American should read, The American
(published 1877) tells the story of a wealthy California
businessman who goes to Paris to find the best wife
possible. He finds her and they fall in love, but her
aristocratic family does NOT approve of her marriage
to a mere American. But then he gets some
