Happy Mother’s Day to all of our Kings moms! For the fourth year in a row, the United Way of Warren County has provided books to all Warren County Public School District Preschool Classrooms. This week, Community Impact Director, Jerri Langworthy delivered their Summer Slide Book packet to each child enrolled in the Kings Preschool. The United Way of Warren County, in partnership with Duke Energy and the Warren County Foundation are working together to promote childhood literacy and ensuring that every child in Warren County is ready for kindergarten. The Summer Slide packet was created so children and their parents could enjoy reading and learning together this summer. Summer Slide is the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. Encouraging children to read 4-6 books over the summer has the potential to prevent a decline in reading achievement scores. It is recommended that children have 20 age appropriate books in their home library to master required literacy skills throughout their early and elementary education career. The Stop Summer Slide Program provides 20% of the recommended requirement of books for 3 and 4 year old children enrolled in our preschool classrooms. KHS Student Receives Award from WCESC On Wednesday, April 5, the Warren County Educational Service Center hosted the 2nd annual Franklin B. Walter Scholarship Award Program where Kings High School Senior, Hannah Rasmussen was honored. One student from each Warren County school district received the award at a luncheon given in their honor. The award honors students who have exhibited superior academic achievement and recognizes the teachers those students have chosen as having a positive impact in their lives. Selection of the award was made by school district leaders in each Warren County school district based on applications submitted by students. Dr. Franklin B. Walter was the State of Ohio Superintendent of Public Instruction for fourteen years. This award was created by the Ohio Educational Service Center Association to honor Dr. Walter’s significant and lasting impact on public education in Ohio. To show appreciation to educators, students were asked to write a letter to an educator or mentor who had impacted their life. Hannah read a letter she wrote to Mrs. Lynn Brant, KHS Math Teacher and her Track Coach. The Governing Board of Warren County Educational Service Center awarded Hannah with a $500 scholarship, plaque and a proclamation from Senator Wilson, and honored Mrs. Brant with a $250 cash award. Big Shoe Award for SLE 4th Graders Congratulations to Mrs. Westley’s 4th grade class for winning the “Big Shoe” award for April. The class ran 195 laps in the month of April. The Big Shoe award was established about six years ago when former gym teacher, Lynn Kelley and SLE teacher, Peggy Allen noticed that many children weren’t engaged in physical activity during recess. The teachers started the “Flying Knights,” a program that encourages students to run or walk on the “Sammy Track” at the playground. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, students in grades 2-4 earn points for each lap they walk around the trap. The laps are tallied at the end of the month and the class with the most laps earns the big shoe, which is actually Anthony Munoz’s shoe that he had mounted and donated to SLE. The students earn clips with footprint charms for each 5 miles (25 laps) they run or walk. Mrs. Allen said, “Several students earn the distinction of being in the "100 laps and over" Club, and many get well past the 200 lap mark!” Keep up the good work! Last day of school for students is Friday, May 26! May 12, 2017 Page 2 Kings Junior High Dinner Theater On Friday, May 5, Kings Junior High performed their annual Dinner Theater. Each year, Kings High School students volunteer to direct short, two-person scenes, starring students from KJH. The rehearsal process focuses on learning acting basics, and the culmination is a dinner followed by a performance of the scenes. This year, they had a record 27 directors and 24 performers. Kings High School Drama Advisor, Peter Moore said, “Thanks to the students who gave their time, energy, and talents to make this night a huge success! “ CIS Student Participates State History Day Columbia Intermediate School 6th Grader, Ali Hussain represented Kings at the Ohio History Day on April 29 at Ohio Wesleyan University. He competed alongside of 600 students from 100 Ohio schools. CIS teachers Karen Wiley and Ken Johnson traveled to Columbus to support Ali in his efforts. Wiley said, “Ali didn’t place but has such a positive outlook and is so gracious.” That sounds pretty #KingsStrong! Congratulations, Ali! KHS Work Study Students Recognized On Friday, May 5, the Kings High School students who participated in the Work Study Program were treated to a Work Study Year End Celebration to recognize their accomplishments. Students received certificates, along with recognizing those who supported the students in their work this school year. Lorraine Hartke, KHS Intervention Specialist said, “The Work Study program is successful because of the commitment that the students, supervisors, coordinators, and teachers provided.” The Warren County Board of Developmental Disabilities and the Warren County Educational Service Center were also an important component. Their partnership with Kings High School makes it possible to provide these opportunities for our students to become self-supporting and productive individuals, with the goal of gainful employment. Students worked in the junior high office and high school office and cafeteria, they worked with the Kings Maintenance Crew, as well as T.J. Maxx and Rivers Crossing Community Church. Congratulations to all of our Work Study students! May 12, 2017 Page 3 A Week of Appreciation This week we celebrated Staff Appreciation Week and National Nurses Day in the district. Shark Tank at JFB The 4th graders in Mrs. Krepps' Social Studies class at J.F. Burns Elementary took learning Economics to the next level by their own version of Shark Tank! The students created a good or service that they wanted to "sell" to the Sharks; aka Mrs. Bowman, Mrs. Montag, Miss Healy, and Mrs. Wilson. From there, they created a business plan, decided who their audience was, what factors of production they would use, and the purpose of their good/service. They watched Shark Tank videos to get an idea of how the process works. Along with the Sharks, their peers were able to add comments and/or suggestions to the groups. This year’s first place team was the “Breakfast to Go” team consisting of Noah Edwards, Joey Juenger, and Will Watkins. Mrs. Krepps said, “The students got a taste of what it is like to become an entrepreneur.” Kings Offers FREE Summer Lunch Program The Kings Local School District, in partnership with the South Lebanon Community Center/Joshua’s Place Community Outreach Organization, is participating in a Summer Meal Program. May 12, 2017 Page 4 KHS Trebuchet Competition Students in Mr. Shields’ Engineering 1 class held a Trebuchet Competition this week. A trebuchet is a compound machine that is powered exclusively by the force of gravity. It works by using energy of a falling counterweight to launch a projectile. It was used in the middle ages to throw heavy payloads at enemies. The students competed by seeing who could throw an egg the farthest using their homemade trebuchet. The students were allowed to build whatever they wanted as long it is was 5'x2'x7'. They were not allowed to use bungees, springs, or elastic material. Pictured L-R: Josh Gleberman, Nate Muenchen, Zack Kinkelaar, and Gideon Diebel. During the project they learned about linear and angular velocity, parametric equations, and torque. Students maximized these physics concepts in the design of their trebuchet. The students went through multiple iterations of their designs improving it each time they threw. Mr. Shields said, “They were very resilient and showed a lot of character when faced with adversity.” Engineering student, Josh Gleberman said, “The first two times we fired the trebuchet broke, we had the base break and the arm snap in half. We spent a while really working hard on it, and the next time we fired the trebuchet it went into the woods. That was the first time it had actually fired the egg. We learned that if we persevere through failures and you can still succeed." CIS Skypes with Famous Author The students at Columbia Intermediate School won a Skype visit from Linda Sue Park, author of A Long Walk to Water. The entire 6th grade filled the CIS cafeteria to spend some time with Park asking questions and learning more about her. The Skype session was a prize from the Iron Giraffe Challenge Raffle. The class received an entry for raising $1,000 to help purchase a drill and they also received an extra entry for referring and inspiring Loveland Intermediate School to participate in the Iron Giraffe Challenge. Among other things, Park explained her methods of research and told the students that she researched for 6 months before writing A Long Walk to Water. Kings Students Run in the Flying Pig Three Kings siblings ran in the 5K Flying Pig last weekend. Preston Dickerson, KJH 8th grader, Peyton Dickerson, CIS 6th grader, and Parker Dickerson, SLE 2nd grader, joined the thousands of other racers through the streets of Cincinnati. All three siblings had impressive finishes. Out of 5,609 racers, Preston placed 61st, Parker placed 400th, and Peyton placed 888th. Congratulations! The grant money will be used to fund the 5th Grade Diversity/Disabilities Awareness Community Service Project . The grant was based on the goal of the 5th grade students becoming aware and understanding the needs of the special needs students in their school and community, and to help them create a school environment that is inclusive of everyone, regardless of their disability. This year, all 5th graders have been learning about diversity and empathy by reading the novel Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper. They have participated in fundraising for a new adaptive playground swing that will allow all students to interact and play together, fostering positive relationships and attitudes. With this grant, the new adaptive swing will be purchased and is expected to be installed by August. Special thanks to CIS Media Specialist, Kelly McKiernan for writing the winning grant. On May 19, all fifth grade students will participate in Diversity/Disabilities Awareness Day where students will rotate through simulation stations to experience to a certain degree, what it feels like to have a disability.
