GARBAGE, TRASH, YARD WASTE and RECYCLABLES • All materials must be placed at the curb by 7:00 AM on your regularly scheduled collection day. (NO MATERIAL SHOULD BE PLACED IN THE STREET). • NO materials shall be placed at the curb before 6:00 PM the day before your collection day. Garbage shall be placed only in covered totes, metal or rodent-proof containers with lids. • All garbage shall be secured in tote units at all times. Excess trash may be placed in metal or rodent-proof containers with lids closed, not to exceed 40 gallon capacity or 60 pound weight. All containers must have (2) two manufactured handles. Containers used for yard waste must have lids removed. • Carpet, carpet padding, pool liners and pool covers must be cut in 4 foot widths, rolled and tied, not to exceed 60 pounds per bundle. • Stumps, logs and excessive amounts of tree trimmings will be picked up during Spring Brush Cleanup only. • Fences, plasterboard, drywall, paneling and doors must be cut to 4’ x 4’ sections and neatly stacked. All nails are to be removed or flattened. All other smaller pieces must be securely bundled, not to exceed 4 feet in length or 60 pounds per bundle. • Bulky items, such as furniture, mattresses and box springs must be placed at the curb with garbage. • Any major construction, including renovations and roof repairs, require the property owner to contact a commercial waste service for the proper disposal of the material. HOLIDAY “PICK UP” SCHEDULE NEW YEAR’S DAY • MEMORIAL DAY • INDEPENDENCE DAY • LABOR DAY • THANKSGIVING DAY • CHRISTMAS DAY If your scheduled pick up falls on or follows any of the above holidays, pick up will be delayed one day the entire week (Friday pick up will be on Saturday). AUTOMOTIVE, BOAT and AGRICULTURAL EQUIPMENT BATTERIES • Trade in your old battery when purchasing a new one. (The new law requires deposit charges on batteries). CONSTRUCTION DEBRIS GENERATED by the RESIDENT/HOMEOWNER • Place debris in a safe manner in containers or neatly tied bundles no longer than 4 feet with weight not to exceed 60 pounds. • Debris from any contracted work done on your property must be disposed of by the contractor. LARGE APPLIANCES - WHITE GOODS, Call First for Pick-up. • REMOVE DOORS FROM REFRIGERATORS AND FREEZERS. • Place all appliances and large items; chairs, sofas, mattresses, etc. at the curb on your regular collection day. BRUSH and YARD WASTE • Branches and brush must be tied in BUNDLES not greater than 4 feet in length or heavier than 60 pounds. • Yard waste, grass cuttings, leaves, etc. can be placed in an OPEN CONTAINER not to exceed 60 pounds or PAPER YARD WASTE BAGS. Please keep all Plastic, Brick and Stone out of yard waste. • Leaves, after October 15th, can be raked up and placed BETWEEN the curb and sidewalk for pick up. PAINT - LATEX or OIL Latex paints; in original containers in a SOLID FORM by using kitty litter, sand or air dry and place in garbage with lids removed. Oilbased paints; contact Town of Amherst Refuse Control for instructions: 631-7119. HAZARDOUS WASTE/WASTE OIL • Pesticides, pool chemicals, paint thinners, oil-based paints, lead, batteries, flammable materials and flammable liquids,etc. WILL NOT BE COLLECTED by the Town of Amherst. These materials are not permitted in landfills by Federal Laws. • Return your used motor oil to an auto service station. They are required by law to accept up to 5 gallons of waste oil. Please take CFC’s and fluorescent bulbs to your local Home Improvement store for recycling. MAGAZINES • Magazines, catalogs and CATALOGS PHONE BOOKS phone books delivered to your home or purchased at a newsstand and all types of books. WHAT TO DO • Place newspapers, magazines and catalogs in paper grocery bags if possible. • Keep paper in bottom of recycling container. ITEMS NOT RECYCLABLE • Napkins, tissue paper, paper towels, wax paper or wrapping paper. • DO NOT USE STRING OR PLASTIC BAGS. • NO OTHER PAPER PRODUCTS. ITEMS NOT RECYCLABLE • Pizza boxes or any other cardboard contaminated with food. • Wax coated cardboard. • Oil stained cardboard. • Wet or dirty boxes, yellowish “FOREIGN” cardboard. • CORRUGATED CARDBOARD • Heavy paper items used for packaging, mailing or shipping. • Corrugated cardboard has 2 outer layers of heavy paper with a ribbed section in the middle. Gable-top Containers • Milk cartons. • Juice cartons. • Individual drink boxes. Place loose in recycling container with other containers. Cartons • Rinse cartons thoroughly and drain. • Cartons with plastic spouts; remove lids. Individual drink boxes without straws • Drain all liquid content. ITEMS NOT RECYCLABLE • Straws from drink boxes. • Individual drink pouches. • DO NOT place in plastic bags. • Rinse containers thoroughly. • Remove lids and caps. • Labels DO NOT have to be removed. • Place loose in recycling container with other containers. ITEMS NOT RECYCLABLE • Ceramic bottles and other ceramic items, flower pots, crystal, light bulbs, mirror and window glass, heat resistant ovenware, hypodermic syringes or eyeglasses. • Rinse containers thoroughly. • Labels DO NOT have to be removed. • Place loose in recycling container with other containers. ITEMS NOT RECYCLABLE • Propane cylinders, silverware, metal/cardboard containers (frozen juice, motor oil), small appliances, metal cookware, tin foil, hypodermic needles or paint cans. • GLASS BOTTLES • All clear, green and brown food and beverage containers. PLACE LOOSE IN RECYCLING CONTAINER. • METAL CANS • All metal food and beverage containers (cans). • EMPTY pet food cans. • Metal lids, closures and caps. • Empty aerosol cans. • Aerosol cans. DO NOT INCLUDE ANY TYPE OF BATTERY • PLASTIC • Only small mouth bottles, food, soap and beverage containers with threaded cap. • Look on the bottom of the container for recycling symbols. Small mouth with threaded cap only. RINSE THOROUGHLY PLACE LOOSE INSIDE RECYCLING CONTAINER • Rinse thoroughly and drain. • Labels DO NOT have to be removed. • Only small neck containers with recycling symbols. • EXAMPLES: Milk and water jugs, juice and all beverage bottles, soap and detergent bottles, ketchup and salad dressing. • SOME EXCEPTIONS: Peanut butter and jelly jars, pickles and relish jars, etc. ITEMS NOT RECYCLABLE • Any plastic container other than small mouth regardless of symbol on bottom are NOT RECYCLABLE AT THIS TIME. NO WIDE MOUTH CONTAINERS. • SUCH AS: Yogurt, cottage cheese, margarine, “baby wipes” tubs and motor oil containers, etc. • No microwave trays, NO plastic bags, furniture, plates, tableware, medicine bottles, plexiglass, fast food containers, snack bags or Tupperware. EVEN IF LABELED WITH SYMBOL. • NO polystyrene (styrofoam). • Place your clean glass, metal and plastic containers and milk cartons in the recycling container together. • Place your paper products in the BOTTOM of recycling container. • Place your recycling container and paper cardboard items neatly stacked at the curb by 7:00 AM on your regular garbage collection day.
