March/April 2014 Edition 69 Strong Burringurrah Town - Winner 1st Prize —Carnarvon Helping Gascoyne Junction—Winner 3rd Prize - Carnarvon Carnarvon Town - Winner Active Shark Bay Town - Winner Gascoyne ‘Thanks Dad’ Photo Competition Winners PROUDLY PUBLISHED AND PRINTED BY Council News March/April 2014 Hello Readers, This cooler weather in the past few weeks has been a welcome change as it starts to look like Summer is finally behind us for another year. I have a number of things to mention in this month’s edition of the Gassy Gossip but will start with a very non-Shire related topic of the missing Malaysian Airlines plane MH 370. It is hard to believe that in 2014 and the electronic age we live in that is it possible to simply lose a Boeing 777 aircraft after someone simply turns off the transponder. These aircraft are not small fry, MH370 has a replacement value of over $400 million Australian dollars, is it appropriate that one individual can flick a switch and make this aircraft disappear? It should not happen and no doubt some changes will be implemented to prevent a similar incident occurring in the future. Each of Councils Caterpillar machines, including the Graders, Truck and Loader, have built in tracking devices. I can sit at my computer in my office and know in almost real time where the machine is in the world at any given time as well as key operating information including engine hours, engine temp, fuel remaining and asset utilisation. This facility also automatically sends an email if a serious fault occurs on the machine or if the machine leaves a pre designated area (which we set to the entire Shire of Upper Gascoyne) this tracking information cannot be easily turned off as one would expect and if this information is available as standard equipment on various heavy plant items its time airlines were forced to use this technology which is already fitted to each aircraft but as a cost saving many decided not to use it (our very own QANTAS is one airline that elects to use this tracking information but it is not compulsory for them to do so). For the families of MH 370 passengers and crew, I hope they are able to find the plane to give the families some closure however given the vast area of the search, sadly I do not believe the plane or any answers will be found anytime soon. OK, now onto Shire business, SPECIAL SERIES REGISTRATION PLATES Council will be creating and having an auction for special series numberplates, these will include the following numbers. 1 GU, 2 GU, 3 GU, 4 GU, 5 GU, 6 GU, 7 GU, 8 GU, 9 GU, 10 GU, 11 GU, 12 GU, 13 GU, 14 GU, 15 GU. 01 GU, 02 GU, 03 GU, 04 GU, 05 GU, 06 GU, 07 GU, 08 GU, 09 GU. Dirk Sellenger LICENSEE 2 Council News TOURISM PRECINCT The Tourism Precinct is going from strength with a large number of the teething problems behind us. The task of setting up a brand new retail facility is well outside the ordinary day to day tasks of small Local Governments. To be able to walk into the facility and purchase a burger for lunch or a nice meal and a cold beer in the evening is very satisfying and it is very pleasing to see the facility being used by so many locals as well as Tourists and a large number of bookings have been taken for later in the week at the commencement of the School Holidays. I would like to thank the Tourism Precinct Manager, Leanne Warren for all her hard work to get the facility up and operating and also to Rachael Funnell whom at the same time as carrying out her daily tasks of Administration Manager has been instrumental in getting the facility off the ground and operating efficiently and accurately. Remember this is a Council owned and operated facility and all funds are Government owned and must be dealt with accordingly. Well done Ladies. TOBACCO SALES – ROADHOUSE / TAVERN Council resolved to apply for a License to sell Tobacco products. The license application was recently completed and we are hoping to have Tobacco Products available for sale by early May 2014 so please be patient. As you are all aware, there are restrictions relating to smoking in areas of food service so please be aware of designated smoking areas at the Tourism Precinct as these will be enforced. SEALING AND KERBING The Bitumen sealing of the Caravan Park was recently completed and the area looks good. Kerbing works will commence on 3rd May followed by line marking and Landscaping soon afterwards. The Single units currently situated in Hatch street will be relocated to the Western End of the Caravan Park and offered as alternative selfcontained accommodation to the existing four cabins available. VISITING PHOTOGRAPHER Amateur photographer, Lawrence Hillary, recently visited town and took a large number of photos of the Tourism Precinct and around town. These photos will be used on the soon to be completed Tourism Precinct Webpage and for area promotion generally. A photo taken by Lawrence of the pool can be found below: 3 Council News GAS BOTTLE REFILLS The Shire is able to refill gas bottles now at the Tourism Precinct, these refills include your standard 5kg and 9kg bottles or any other bottle able to be ordinarily refilled (not 45kg). GASCOYNE JUNCTION AIRSTRIP REBUILD Engineering design for the airstrip was recently commenced and works are expected to commence in mid to late May 2014. Whilst works are carried out on the Gascoyne Junction Airstrip the Race Course airstrip situated approximately 10kms to the west of town will become the main town airstrip whilst these works are completed. ANZAC DAY SERVICE Unfortunately I will be away this Anzac Day however ANZAC day items are available from the Shire Office for anyone wanting to run the service on the day. Whilst this has historically been a Shire delivered program anyone is welcome to deliver this and we look forward to hearing from you with regards to details. The Department has a couple of projects to occur over the next few months in the Shire. Firstly there will be the installation of two new long drop toilets at Kennedy Range with the existing one not able to meet the demands of increasing tourist numbers. Secondly is the installation of two new information shelters at Mount Augustus. Other work will include upgrading of some totem posts from timber to steel, let’s see the termites eat these ones. With luck these will be completed early in the tourist season. The type of information shelter to be installed at Mt Augustus The roads into and around Kennedy Range National Park were badly damaged in the recent rains and thanks go to the Shire and crews for the work on repairing these recently. On a positive note, the rains have greened up the park and it is looking good at the moment, let’s hope for some winter rains to keep it going. Another project starting to be put together is the installation of well covers to address visitor risk issues on some of the ex pastoral leases. These will be along the same lines as what was installed at Old Cobra Homestead to allow access to the wells in the future if needed. Staff wish Kevin Hagan a speedy recovery from illness and have been keeping in touch with him during his stay in hospital. Thanks go to Laura Russ (Burringurrah Police) and Don Hammarquist for keeping an eye on things while he is away. 5 6 7 8 9 The Junction Race Club held their AGM in February and the following office bearers were elected: President—Brett Smith Vice President—Ross John Collins Secretary—Rachael Funnell Co-Treasurers—Hamish and Jodie McTaggart Bar Manager—John Kearney Assistant Bar Manager—Phil Kearney Racing Manager—Paul Kearney Gymkhana Manager—Joanne Symonds There will be a busy bee at the Race Course on May 3rd and 4th.
