Hazards identification Adverse human health effects Very toxic by inhalation Liquid bromine rapidly attacks the skin and other tissues, producing irritation and burn which heal very slowly. Even comparatively Iow concentrations of vapour are highly irritating and painful to the respiratory track Archean Chemical Industries Pvt Ltd, First Floor , Sudha Centre, New No.31, Old No.19, Dr Radhakrishnan Salai, Mylapore, Chennai 600 004, Tamilnadu, India Page 1 of 8 4. First-aid measures 4.1 Description of first aid measures Eye Contact Skin Contact Inhalation Ingestion Holding the eyelids apart, flush eyes promptly with copious flowing water for at least 20 minutes. Get medical attention immediately. Flood Skin with water directing a stream of water under the clothing while it is being removed. Wash skin thoroughly with mild soap and plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Get medical attention immediately It is important to wash immediately, with water, contaminated skin or eyes and then get medical attention. NO DECANTAMINANTS OTHER THAN WATER SHOULD BE USED ON HUMANS In case of inhalation, remove person to fresh air Keep him quiet and warm. Apply artificial respiration if necessary and get medical attention immediately If swallowed, wash mouth thoroughly with plenty of water. Get medical attention immediately NOTE: Never give an unconscious person anything to drink 4.2 Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed Ocular Dermal Inhalation Ingestion 4.3. Indication of immediate medical attention and special treatment needed Corrosive. Symptoms include redness, pain and blurred vision Lachrimation occurs at less than 1 ppm Corrosive. Symptoms include redness, pain and edema Corrosive to mucous membrane and upper respiratory tract. Symptoms include sore throat, dizziness, headache, nosebleed, coughing, abdominal pain and sometimes a rash Corrosive by ingestion Symptoms as of inhalation Corrosive. In case of ingestion DO NOT induce vomiting. No special antidote. Treat symptomatically and supportively 5. Fire-fighting measures 5.1. Extinguishing media Material is not combustible. Use extinguishing media appropriate to surround fire conditions. 5.2 Special hazards arising Although non-combustible itself, this fuming liquid will react with from the substance or combustible materials and may cause them to ignite. Hydrogen, many mixture organic compounds and some metals will burn in a bromine atmosphere. If exposed to a fire, The vapour pressure increases rapidly and might lead to the rupture of the receptacle Archean Chemical Industries Pvt Ltd, First Floor , Sudha Centre, New No.31, Old No.19, Dr Radhakrishnan Salai, Mylapore, Chennai 600 004, Tamilnadu, India Page 2 of 8 5.3. Advice for fire fighters Stay upwind. Avoid bodily contact. Wear self-contained breathing apparatus in positive pressure mode and appropriate protective clothing. Wear full chemical protective suit if contact with material or dense fumes smoke anticipated. Use water from side and from safe distance to keep fire exposed containers cool. 6. Accident release measures 6.1. Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures 6.2. Environmental precautions 6.3. Methods and material for containment and cleaning up Evacuate area. Full protective clothing, including self-contained breathing apparatus, must be used. Prevent entry into sewers and watercourses Consult an expert In case of vapour leakage, release gaseous anhydrous ammonia from a safe distance. In case of liquid spills: CAUTIONS: 1. ANHYDROUS AMMONIA SHOULD NOT BE APPLIED DIRECTLY TO LIQUID SPILLS 2. SOLUTION OR SLURRIES IN HIGHER CONCENTRATION CAN SOMETIMES RESULT IN A HIGH HEAT OF REACTION WITH SUBSEQUENT RELEASE OF BROMINE VAPOUR FROM THE POOL. For all kind of spills: In general, lime slurry is the most commonly used neutralizing agent due to its availability. Large spills: dike area to prevent spill from spreading. Cover the bromine spillage with large amount. Bromine can be neutralized also by sodium carbonate solution (30%) and sodium hydroxide solution (5%). 6.4. Reference to other None sections 7. Handling and storage 7.1. Precautions for safe Avoid breathing vapours and any other bodily contact. handling Keep above -7 degree C to prevent freezing. All personnel handling bromine should be fully trained and provided with suitable protective clothing. Totally enclosed systems should be used for processes involving bromine. Pipe works and tanks should be checked regularly for leaks. In laboratories, bromine containers should be kept closed and only handled in fume cupboards or under extraction hoods. Warm containers should be allowed to cool to room temperature before they are opened. Before transferring bromine between containers, a check should be made that the receiving container has room for it. Archean Chemical Industries Pvt Ltd, First Floor , Sudha Centre, New No.31, Old No.19, Dr Radhakrishnan Salai, Mylapore, Chennai 600 004, Tamilnadu, India Page 3 of 8 7.2. Conditions for safe Store in a dry, cool, well-ventilated area storage, including any Containers should be stored upright and all be clearly labelled. incompatibilities Glass, ceramic, nickel or lead containers are suitable for bromine. Lead –lined steel tanks can be used. Only highly fluorinated plastics (PVDF) will resist corrosion. A free space of 10% by volume should be left in the container. Outside shaded or detached storage areas are preferred. A detached storage area is either an outside shaded area or a separate building containing no incompatible materials and located away from all the other structures. In the case of detached storage the building construction should be fire resistant and provisions made for potential fire fighting activities, according to relevant local and national codes, and in consultation with local fire-fighting professionals. The fire fighting installation should include provisions for an adequate supply of water. Fire extinguishers and hydrants should be distributed around the area. Fire fighting water run-off should be prevented from polluting water sources. Floors should be of impervious construction, preferably concrete. Container should not be dropped or handled roughly. 8.
