We offer a range of programs designed to
prepare you to succeed at ANU.
Foundations
of success
Choose from a range of English language and academic pathway programs that are
right for your academic level and the ANU degree you plan to study.
Foundation Studies (page 16)
Each pathway in the Foundation Studies
program has been created to offer a route into
the first year in one of many degree programs,
across different subject areas. This program
is designed for high school students aged 16
and over who require additional academic
preparation and to further develop their English
language skills in an academic environment.
ANU Diplomas (page 28)
With pathways to IT and Arts these programs
are designed for students who have completed
high school, and possibly another year of study,
but have not achieved the required grades for
direct entry or need further English language
training. By successfully completing this
program you can enter the second year of a
range of degree programs.
ANU Express (see page 26)
A fast-track plan for high-achieving students,
this program covers a broad range of subjects
to give access to many degree programs at
ANU. A focus on research helps to prepare
highly qualified students for academic life
and success on a shorter timescale than the
Foundation Studies program.
Academic English Preparation (AEP)
(page 34)
AEP is available from 2016. This program
has been created to help students advance
their proficiency in using English in academic
settings and to develop the study skills needed
for university.
Access English (page 32)
ANU Access English is a 10-week intensive
course with a strong focus on Academic English
designed to equip international students with
the academic skills and knowledge required
to transition successfully to postgraduate and
undergraduate courses at ANU.
What’s involved?
Students enrolled in ANUC programs are
provided with excellent resources for their
work. Helpful and experienced academic staff
are on hand to assist in their studies. As well
as the timetabled lessons, students have
supervised study time, during which they
coordinate their own learning and
assignments. Please note that this is only
available to students in English courses and
the ANUC Foundation Studies programs.

Studying in the ANU College was a 3 in 1
advantage for me. I got to learn new things such
as citing and referencing. I even got to make friends
with people from all around the world. With that, I learnt
a lot more about their cultures, beliefs and also a bit of
their native language.
Finally, ANU College has this type of special study
environment where it makes you feel more at home than
at school. The teachers and staff there are very lovely and
caring. Even after College, they still keep in contact with me.”

experience in laboratory work.
Calculus
This course presents Calculus in a concise and meaningful
way so that students can understand mathematical concepts and their
connections to real-world problems and challenges. Students will receive
an introduction to numerical analysis including L’Hopital’s Rule, continuity,
differential calculus and integral calculus. All techniques are illustrated with
mainstream applications in pure, applied and social sciences.
Study Courses are for both ANUC Foundation Studies and ANU Express
anucollege.edu.au
After studying Foundation Studies, you will be ready to
join the first year of an undergraduate degree at ANU
Chemistry
This subject will provide the student with the basic principles
of chemistry, covering a range of topics, including: classification of
matter, simple atomic structure, kinetic theory of gases and gas laws,
understanding the periodic properties of the elements, chemical equilibria
and introduction to organic chemistry. There is an emphasis on problems
involving calculations in this course and all students must own and be
familiar with a scientific calculator.
Computer Applications
This subject is designed to provide students with the computer
applications skills required for academic success in both their current
studies and future university pathways. Core modules include word
processing, spreadsheet and presentation skills using MS Office.
Additional modules are chosen to support students’ academic
assignments in Foundation Studies, and may include website design,
databases, algorithmic problem solving or other relevant topics. Particular
emphasis is given to online research and the effective use of academic
referencing tools.
Critical Thinking and Reasoning
This course aims to develop the thinking skills necessary for
successful analysis and evaluation of arguments through instruction
in patterns of reasoning, informal logic, and analysis of texts. By the
end of this course, students should be able to analyse and evaluate
weak and sound arguments, identify common faults in reasoning and
suggest counter arguments.
Economics
This subject is for Foundation Studies students intending to
study an undergraduate course at the ANU College of Business
and Economics. Students learn how economic theory can be applied
to current events and issues, such as climate change and the global
financial crisis, and how to present an argument making use of economic
reasoning and statistical evidence. The course covers concepts such as
supply and demand, economic growth, inflation and international trade.
Key Moments in Western Civilisation
The course provides a chronological study of the origins and
nature of some important aspects of Western Civilisation
including ideas and beliefs from the ancient world of Socrates and
Plato, to twentieth century America and Martin Luther King. The course
will focus on many historical periods, including the Roman Empire, the
Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Victorians and the American civil
rights movement.
Legal Studies
This subject is designed to prepare Foundation Studies
students for first year undergraduate study, particularly in
humanities or law-related disciplines. Students will learn how to construct
a legal argument, resolve legal issues, conduct legal research, and
express a point of view. Topics include an overview of the following:
access to justice, legal systems around the world, criminal law,
international law, environmental law, and technology and the law.
Linguistics
The purpose of this course is to demonstrate diverse aspects
of language by using various areas of study, such as phonetics,
phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. The course
is aimed at students enrolled in either ANU Express or the final semester
of the Foundation Studies Program and requires a sophisticated
command of the English language from those wishing to enrol.
Physics
This course is designed to equip international students with
the skills and knowledge needed for an effective transition to
a physics major. The course introduces students to the fundamental
laws of classical mechanics and electromagnetism. Students will gain
an understanding of the concept of energy and its transformations
associated with motion in electric, magnetic and gravitational fields
and will use algebraic as well as graphical representations to calculate,
analyse and predict measurable quantities related to motion,
gravitational effects and electromagnetic phenomena.
Politics
This subject provides a general introduction to politics as
one key aspect of social organisation. Students are introduced
to various definitions of politics and governance and are expected to
investigate and analyse the evolution of political systems around the
world. There is a strong focus on current political developments.
Research Methods (ANU Express students only)
This course introduces students to the set of skills required to
actively participate in university lectures and tutorials and to
effectively prepare and competently execute academic writing tasks
and research projects. During the first part of the course, students
will be introduced to essential academic skills, including effective
reading, listening and note-taking strategies, summarising, academic
composition and referencing and citation. In the second part of the
semester, students will be given the opportunity to further develop these
skills by completing two pieces of academic writing - a research project
and an essay. This will include a close focus on literature review and
associated academic research skills.
Statistics
Algebra is a pre-requisite for this subject. Students are
introduced to the terminology and processes of first year university
statistics courses. Topics include graphing distributions of qualitative
and quantitative variables, working with density curves and normal
distributions, sampling, experiment design and probability.
Twentieth Century History
This course examines major global events, the causes
and effects of World War I and World War II, the decline of empires
and the end of colonialism. Specific areas of study can include the
economic impact of the Great Depression and the changing status
of women around the world. This course may also examine some
of the economic and environmental issues that pose challenges for
governments and international organisations.

The most difficult part about studying in
English would be to write an academic
essay or report. Before coming to Australia,
I'd never written an essay, let alone writing
in English, thus, there is a lot for me to
learn. Other than that, studying in English
isn’t a big problem for me. The classes
are easy to comprehend and most of the
materials are always well provided, so there
v isn’t much difficulty in learning in English.”
