When a noun ends in a consonant followed by a y, the y changes to ies in the
plural.
For example:
butterfly becomes butterflies
lady becomes ladies
When a noun ends in a vowel followed by a y, the y does not change.
For example:
valley becomes valleys
chimney becomes chimneys
