What's Playing At The Playhouse...
June is an ingénue who can't pay the rent and is
threatened by her evil landlord. Will the handsome
leading man come to the rescue? In the hands of
different musical theater composers, the end result may
be quite different than you expect!
In this hilarious tribute to musical theater, one
story becomes five delightful musicals, each written in
the distinctive style of a different master of the form.
The variations are: a Rodgers & Hammerstein version,
set in Kansas in August, complete with a dream ballet;
a Sondheim version, featuring the landlord as a tortured
artistic genius who slashes the throats of his tenants in
revenge for not appreciating his work; a Jerry Herman
version as a splashy star vehicle, a la Mame and Hello, Dolly!; an Andrew
Lloyd Webber version, a rock musical, completely sung-through, with themes
borrowed from Puccini; and a Kander & Ebb version, set in a speakeasy in
Chicago, of course.
This comic valentine to musical theater was the longest running show in
the York Theatre Company's 35-year history before moving to Off-Broadway.
The Musical of Musicals, the Musical…when one musical just isn’t enough!

News from the Artistic Director’s Chair…
I am still humming some of the tunes from our beautiful production of The
Sound of Music. The cast, crew and musicians did an amazing job of bringing
this classic to life on the TMP stage. And you, our patrons, made it sell out at
97% capacity. Patrons were scrambling for tickets the last weekend! We hope
you didn't miss this show.
Now for something completely different! In 2003, Jeff and I saw a hilarious
Off-Broadway show called The Musical of Musicals, the Musical. This wickedly
-clever show pokes fun at five of the leading composers of the American Musical: Rodgers and Hammerstein II, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Kander
and Ebb and Andrew Lloyd Webber. It is five mini-musicals in one! It was skillfully crafted and composed by Joanne Bogart and Eric Rockwell, and we have
put together an amazing cast for this production. And yes, I did say “we.” For
this show, I have asked a new director from Seattle, Pauls Macs, and our own
Maria Valenzuela to each direct two of the mini-musicals, and I will direct and
choreograph the rest. I highly recommend that you attend Behind the Curtain!
at TMP, on Sunday, Jan 13th at 7 pm to learn more about our production. This
is a new show for most of our patrons and we promise that by attending Behind the Curtain! your eventual night at the theater will be thoroughly enhanced. Behind the Curtain! also serves as a great tool for parents who are
considering bring youth to the show, but would like to educate themselves
more about the production before choosing to have their children attend.
Every two years the American Association of Community Theatres presents
a national One-Act competition. This year the national competition is in Carmel, Indiana. In order for a theater company to participate at the national level, they must first compete and win at state and regional levels. The Washington State competition will be hosted by Bremerton Community Theatre on Feb
28 - Mar 2, 2013. TMP is preparing a one-act version of our hilarious hit The
Drowsy Chaperone with most of the original 2011 cast, but also some newcomers. We will be hosting two preview performances for our patrons to come
and see, and help us out financially in hopes of getting to Carmel. The performances are scheduled for Feb 25th & 27th at 7:30 pm. The admission is by
donation. Watch for more information on the website and show programs.
Our Annual Fundraising event, Dancing with the Tacoma Stars, is sure to
be a knock-out event again this year! Save the date, February 16, 2013. It
will again be held at the Temple Theatre with a delicious dinner, professional
ballroom dancers, as well as our own Tacoma stars competing for that treasured Disco Mirror Ball trophy! Come root on your favorite star and help support the many programs of TMP! Find more info on the back of this newsletter.
We are preparing two upcoming Theater Tours for the near future - Chicago
in April 2013, which sold out very quickly, and TMP in China coming August
2013! There was so much interest in the Chicago tour that we are looking at
offering the tour again next year. Those interested in the China tour are encouraged to attend our preliminary information and orientation presentation
in the theater on Monday, Jan 21st at 7 pm. There is no obligation to the tour
necessary to attend this presentation. See the tour brochure at www.tmp.org.
The Tacoma Children’s Musical Theater continues next month with the
extremely popular children’s book, Flat Stanley! The mid-week student group
performances of this show sold out quickly and we think the weekend performances will be just as popular, so don’t wait to book your tickets. In March,
TCMT will present a new children’s musical, Freckleface Strawberry, straight
from Off-Broadway and based on the book by celebrated actress, Julianne
Moore. Both of these fantastic stories - staged by two new-to-TMP directors,
Harry Turpin and Steve Barnett, and casts including some of your favorite TMP
Mainstage actors - are sure to delight all audiences. All seats are reserved.
For those of you who were fortunate enough to have received a TMP Gift
Certificate over the holidays, be sure to look ahead to the applicable show or
shows and consider your performance dates as early as possible. Many of our
performances, especially matinees, will sell out in advance and you won’t
want to miss out on your opportunity to see your favorite show. Call the TMP
Box Office as soon as you have a date in mind and we will arrange your ticket
reservation.

Supporting Our Theater
A Big Surprise is in store for YOU!
While attending Chicago and The Sound of Music,
did you notice any improvements to the sound quality
in our auditorium? Have you noticed the technician
behind the black curtain in the back of the auditorium? Looking up have you noticed there aren’t as
many cords dangling from the light bars? What’s going
on in the TMP Narrows Theater? Thanks to grants
from the Norcliffe, Forest and Sequoia Foundations,
TMP has been able to build a new sound booth at audience level. But wait, that’s only the beginning!
Do I have your attention now?
During the curtain speech at each performance of
The Musical of Musicals, Jon Douglas Rake will have
some important news to share with you. But you’ll
have to wait until then… I’m not going to ruin the surprise! There will also be a friendly TMP Board Member
attending each production just waiting to answer your
questions. Jon will introduce them to you so you will
know who to look for during intermission or after the
show. They will be wearing their gold TMP names tags
and a big bright button that says…..”ASK ME!”
So, listen attentively during the curtain speech
at the next show. I wouldn’t miss it if I were you!
